The soundtrack includes two of the most famous Bach's pieces: "Toccata e Fuga" (in the opening and in the last scene) and "Air on the G String" (in two scenes, played by the main character in his record player.
This is the second collaboration between young actor Akira Ishihama (playing Hiroshi) and director Masaki Kobayashi, of a total 5 films. The others are Youth of the Son, Somewhere Beneath the Wide Sky, The Human Condition (part I) and Harakiri.
