Watts, Ledger, Hoffman earn S.B. honors

Philip Seymour Hoffman, Naomi Watts and Heath Ledger will be honored at the 21st annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival, which runs Feb. 2-12. The fest also will recognize James Cameron with the Attenborough Award for Excellence in Nature Filmmaking. Hoffman, who plays the title role in Bennett Miller's Capote, will be presented with the Riviera Award, established to recognize an actor who has influenced American cinema, on Feb. 11. His credits include Scent of a Woman, Boogie Nights and The Talented Mr. Ripley. »

Kirch Media in VOD rights deal with 4friends

COLOGNE -- Insolvent German rights giant Kirch Media announced Wednesday it has signed a package deal with Munich-based group 4friends giving the subscription service video on demand rights to 160 films from the Kirch library. The agreement gives 4freinds VOD rights in Germany for the next three years to movies including Blade, Rush Hour, The Talented Mr. Ripley and Lost In Space. 4friends will offer the first titles via its Internet portal. Subscribers to the company's service pay €9.95 ($13.13) a month for unlimited downloads from 4friends catalogue of more than 1500 film titles. »

Law on books with Endeavor

Jude Law has switched his talent agency representation from CAA to Endeavor. Law, an Oscar nominee for his work in 1999's The Talented Mr. Ripley and 2003's Cold Mountain, is considered one of the industry's fastest-rising male stars. Law's credits last year alone included I Heart Huckabees, Closer, Alfie, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and a supporting role as Errol Flynn in the Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator. During Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony, Law was among the younger stars chided by host Chris Rock for being less than a "real" movie star. Sources close to the situation said Rock's Oscar quip had nothing to do with Law's decision to exit CAA and that his move to Endeavor has been quietly in the works for the past two weeks. »
