The Matrix (1999) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

One man tells another that he can "hook him up" with a woman in a red dress. She walks by with her cleavage showing in a tight, low-cut dress.

A man is seen naked when he is "awoken" from the Matrix, but his genitals are not shown at any point.

At a scene in a nightclub, there is a brief close-up of a man stroking a woman's butt.

There are two kissing scenes between Neo and Trinity.

A man sees a woman's photo in which she was lying on floor and wearing just panty and bikini. Camera zooms from her toes to face.

3/10

Violence & Gore

Lots of killings with machine guns, resulting in numerous bodies; however, this is mostly PG-13 level stuff with minimal blood.

Constant martial arts violence; again, this is on the low end of an R-rating, and nothing incredibly bad is frequent.

There are gunshot wounds on the chests and on the backs of a few people, occasionally with blood spray; occasionally they are hit in the head, but this isn't very noticeable.

One man gets zapped by a laser gun and we see his charred, bloody arm.

There are numerous martial arts fights with lots of punching and hitting. A few more intense scenes have close-ups of people being punched with blood around their mouths (this is probably the main reason for the R-rating).

Some people get their heads and bodies slammed against walls.PG-13

A man has a creature extracted from his navel, a little blood is shown.PG-13

Trinity throws a knife into a man's forehead during an action scene, but we don't see any blood, nor do we clearly see the impact.PG-13

An agent is shot at an extremely close range; we don't see the impact in detail but there is a brief red mist.PG-13

A man is shot many times, and a bit of blood briefly sprays. He falls back against the wall, and as he slides down it a lot of blood smears behind him.R

A man is skimmed with bullets that cut him open for a brief second.R

Neo shoots many defenseless people at a security gate; one man is seen with blood all over his shirt.R

When people die in the matrix, their bodies in the real world cough up blood and die as well.R

A couple of people are killed with a laser gun, we don't see much detail.PG-13

There is a slow-motion close-up of Morpheus being shot in the leg with a bit of blood spray.PG-13

A group of police officers viciously beat Morpheus with batons, and he is seen covered in dust and has blood on his face !rememeber this movie isn't as graphic or frequent as the r rating seems it to be although its still violent I don't believe it deserves the r rating as it stylised and very fantasised and that's not just why also the facts that its not gory PG-13

8/10

Profanity

"Shit" is said 10 times.

"Goddamn", "asshole", "bastard", "damn" and "hell" are all used a few times.

Strong language including F-words play in a song in the end credits. Turn off early after the film ends and you shouldn't hear them.

5/10

Choi smokes a cigarette at the club, Dujour is seen with a drink.

Cypher and Neo share a drink that is implied to be alcoholic based on Neo's aversive reaction.

Cypher and Agent Smith have wine at dinner. Cypher also smokes a cigar.

The Oracle smokes a cigarette.

3/10

A man wakes up from being hooked up to the Matrix. Many wires and tubes are attached to him, and he is covered in slime.

Some may find it troubling that many police officers are shot and killed by main characters in this movie.

Some human characters are shown turning into digital-like code and disappearing.

A centipede-like creature is dropped on a man's bare chest and digs into his belly button (it is seen moving underneath his skin) but no blood is shown; shortly thereafter, the creature is removed through his navel with a machine.

The antagonists remove a man's mouth. There is no blood or violence or explanation on how it is done, however, it could be disturbing to some viewers. His skin just miraculously melts together. He gets his mouth back later.

Two crew members are shot by an electrocution gun. One of them is seen on the floor after being shot. He has a lot of burns and scars but nothing deep or cut.

In one scene the main protagonist has a panic attack which results in him vomiting and falling to the floor, the scene is brief but may still be distressing to the faint of heart.

7/10

Overall: 26/50 This film is a "mild R" film, which could easily have gotten away with a PG-13 rating. The main thing to watch out for is the violence, but even then, some PG-13 movies are more violent

Suitable for those 13 and up
