For fans of quirky thrillers
lvecrft4 January 2001
A tight little flick with lots of quirky details to keep you entertained. Story, of course, may seem a bit far-fetched, but that's the fun in movies like these. The cast performed their roles well, especially the actor who played the doctor. Very creepy!

That British Guy from Cheers !
caspian197831 August 2001
This movie is just total fun. Don't kill yourself over the plot of story line. Just remember that this film is to entertain you and make you laugh. If you ask yourself how it is possible for the girl to have the money when she couldn't have possibly will only make you crazy. Forget about it. It's one of the all genre covered films that adds just a little bit of everything. Excellent acting by that British guy from Cheers. He plays the best psychopath since Joseph Cotten in Shadow of a Doubt. The brothers who directed this film could be the next Cohen Brothers....keep your eyes on them!

Average action yarn
rob-23623 April 2002
For the first 40 minutes this film was great, I was fully interested in the story of 2 hoodlums who, after being given only a day to pay off their loan shark - decide to blackmail (what they think to be) a very well off british business man.

Then as it goes on it turns a little ridiculous loses credibility and interest, although it was still watchable, if not gripping. Worth a watch if its on TV and you want to kill 90 mins.

Over-the-top suspense thriller
lchris914 August 2001
This is a rather hard to find (not on video)film that fits somewhere in the Tarantino-type tradition of wild plot twists, explicit violence and psycho characters who outdo each other in their insanity and malevolence. There's also quite a bit of sick humor. After the first couple of minutes, I was ready to dismiss Blackmale as another low-budget, perhaps made-for-cable thriller, but it does have some originality and humor that makes it a cut above the standard genre flick. Many of the characters are actually entertaining and funny, if you can appreciate such humor. Still, it's hardly a great film and ends up being mainly an exercise in mindless violence.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen!
extend_my_sin14 August 2005
It's a waste of time watching this movie. My brother actually gave me this film because he would throw it in the garbage if I didn't take it...

The movie itself is so badly written, unexciting story, and pathetic characters. The story is about two men who needs money fast and decide to blackmail a British business man. That's what they think, but of course this isn't the real truth. So the story evolves and the two blackmailers get in deeper and deeper trouble. I sat and watched the clock all the time throughout the entire movie. It's a terrible film that just isn't worth your time. Believe me!

Predictable, Junk
bananku2 July 2002
I was fascinated by the subtitle on the cover "Ultra-violent stylish thriller" but in reality it was actually more a sad comedy than a thriller. The story begins with two friends who owe money and decide to blackmail a psychotic doctor for having crude sex, which they have on tape and it ends up with him blackmailing them. The movie contains scenes of rape and not for the faint-hearted. I would only recommend this movie to those who enjoy this kind of black humor, but by me if you wanted to watch an Independent movie Pi, or The Man Who Wasn't There would be a much better choice.

The worst movie ever made.
bbedwell4 January 2001
I loved Pulp Fiction, I loved Fight Club, and while the writer/directors, the Baluzy brothers have seen those films, they do not belong behind the camera.

The plot is a gang of young kids try to black mail a crazy doctor (John Roos from Cheers). Surprise!, there are double crosses and a lot people are shot. There is a lot of blood and dead bodies, but it is not scary or funny -just sad. Close ups of crack pipe use, sex with dead bodies, dogs tied to car bumpers (remember NatLamp's Vacation?) and donut eating cops.

It not bad enough to be funny, with one small exception, there is a ninja gang chasing them. Their leader uses a walker and when the young Ninja kicks the starts kick he hurts himself because "Dude, you have to stretch first". The only other highlight is Sascha Knopf looks great in a bikini.

Please avoid this.

I like this film, and it's a film that I can watch over and over again, and not get sick of.
Lozbee200017 August 2002
I saw this film about a month ago, and I have to say it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The reason I seen it in the first place was because I found out that Justin Pierce (R.I.P) was in it, and I haven't seen any of his other films apart from Kids, and Next Friday. And as usual he gave a great performance, and so did the rest of the cast.

The story wasn't particularly good but the way the cast acted they made the film watchable. So I would suggest if you want a film that is fun and not to be taken that seriously, than choose this you might even like it.

This movie was criminally bad
view_and_review9 July 2007
What did I just witness? In fact, hold on... 9-1-1, I would like to report a crime. Yes, it is a cinematic crime. You can find the suspects easily by looking up "BlackMale" on IMDb.com. They should be easy to find because none of their careers have taken them anywhere. I just stopped on this movie during a late night channel surf, and it seemed interesting enough. A guy being entrapped by a beautiful young lady; I just wanted to see where it was headed. I later found out that it was headed towards the pits.

Well, the title is silly enough to suggest that the movie in turn wouldn't be any good. Although it had some credible actors in it. Bokeem Woodbine is no stranger, and I certainly remember Roger Rees from "Cheers", but this movie just stunk like nobody's business. The plot and events just kept getting more and more absurd up until the utterly ridiculous ending. Somebody was definitely blackmailed here. I think the actors were blackmailed into being in this movie, but being that it is an indie film, there was no distributor blackmailed into helping produce this junk.

Expected Dross, Found A Rough Diamond

*Coughs*

"Blackmail" has driven me to break my IMDb duck. I am usually in broad agreement with the overall scores, if not the individual reviews of the members of this august body. But it has to said folks. An average score of 4.1 is just wrong, Wrong, WRONG.

I was not looking forward to watching this - the cover text was a deterrent and, as others have said, after 5 minutes my finger was hovering over the stop button.

Then I got it - it's all tongue in cheek - a challenge to see how many cliches can be stretched to the furthest (inc goriest & sickest) possible extent and crammed into 86 minutes, overlaid with thick dollop (sorry to be technical!) of black humour. It's the obvious thing to do with a low budget movie, and it works wonderfully. I squirmed at the gore, and laughed as each cliche approached and was played out with hilarious familiarity. It even has a fabled "boot shot". I hope the cast had an absolute riot making it.

If you're into very black comedy, take out your brain and watch this.

A 7 for setting its stall out and executing it (geddit!) in a far classier manner than it suggests on the tin.

And you'll never look at a briar pipe the same again. Guaranteed.

Terrible. Terrible. *shakes head*
sarasaurus_sex6 November 2006
My film teacher showed us this movie to teach us about independent films and because one of his friends worked on it. He warned us in the very beginning that it was a horrible movie and that he was sorry to have to make us watch it. This is coming from a FILM TEACHER WHO WAS FRIENDS WITH SOMEONE WHO HELPED MAKE IT. Everyone at the end of the movie in my class was just shaking their heads and was laughing throughout the whole thing (though it was just stupid, not funny). The acting is too much, the story loses itself after a while and spins way out of control, and it was just overall confusing. The Quentin Tarantino aim was completely lost because I love Tarantino films and I love high-paced action movies and I'm usually really good at following fast stories. This is just a terrible movie and I really highly suggest STAYING AWAY.

Brilliant action and suspense. Man confronting Man. Man searching for purpose ,which ends on a cul de sac.
tjridd19 February 2007
I fell in love with this film. Two men with vision set sail to expose the wretched underbelly of mans struggle against societies vices. This is not a love story. It is a tale carefully woven through the murky dark shadows of an underworld not known to you,me or my granny. My senses were pleasured with subtle nuances and textures that caused me to dab my moistened brow..... twice. Gee, I found myself saying over and over again. All the while I began to think, heck ,is my vocabulary really limited to the word gee. The non stop action grips one by the by the fleshy part of the earlobe and tugs you along on the ride of your life! Life is short and now your earlobe is disfigured. Enjoy a great movie

Most Entertaining Low-Budget of All Time
ExtremeHobo11 August 2005
This is a movie that is low budget and knows it. The movie never takes its self seriously and is fun to laugh at for that reason in addition to the actual comedy that is found throughout the movie. I will honestly say that if I am bored and want to watch a movie, that Blackmale has been there for me more than any other movie.

The Plot is actually pretty crafty and full of (surprisingly) unsuspecting twists. The special effects are actually quite realistic which is surprising for such a low budget movie. Bokeeem Woodbine plays his role with a serious emotion that only adds to the hilariousness of the movie. Justin Pierce (R.I.P) is hilarious as a guy who has possibly the worst day of his entire life. The comedy of the movie culminates in the final 10 minutes that have had me and everyone else watching the movie rolling on the floor for hours. This movie is a classic and deserves more respect.

an independent thrill-ride
don savant14 July 2000
This is a must see film for people who enjoy "off the wall" thrillers. The movie filled with slightly predictable, but truly amazing plot twists. Every character is memorable in this maniac driven film. I think a sequel should be considered. Rest in Peace Justin Pierce.

Genius indy film.
thecrazylikebard24 June 2002
This is a genius film. The Baluzy brothers rival the Coens in this fast paced, intellegent thriller. Each twist and turn will shock you, and it even throws in a little black comedy in the mix. A must see. Rent it, or buy it, it could easily be on the top 250.

A clever idea ruined by poor acting and plotting
philb-1526 January 2004
Warning: Spoilers
There are some spoilers here.

The first 45 minutes or so of this movie show much promise. Two plastic, wannabe bad boys owe $12,000 to a mysterious black dude and invent a clever scam in order to raise the cash. They decide to set up a Doctor (yes, the English guy from Cheers) with a woman and film them having sex. They then blackmail the English guy from Cheers and warn him that they'll show the video to his wife unless he hands over a very large sum of money (at least $12,000 for starters).

Things appear to be going reasonably well for the two bad-guys as they hold the English guy from Cheers hostage at his house and attempt to withdraw the money from his bank account. But then, in a very well-staged scene, the English guy from Cheers is revealed in a totally different light. This twist in itself is very clever and is revealed in a very casual manner which takes one by surprise. But from this promising plot development the movie then subsides into unintentional hilarity. Everybody ends up trying to double-cross everyone else, and, most ridiculously of all, the mysterious black dude that I mentioned, to whom the $12,000 was originally owed, is revealed as a Snoop-Doggy lookalike with a zimmer frame (I kid you not).

There is a final shoot-out which is handled very badly by the directors and the impression one gets is that the scriptwriter had a very good idea, with a clever twist, but just didn't have a clue about how to expand this to a more sensible conclusion. 4/10

This is not a bad film! Had me hooked way longer than "Fargo" Graphic, Brutal, Black Comedy, Serial Killer Thriller.
Beyondtherain21 February 2020
This film is hidden and hardly has any reviews, I watched it for the first time today and I'll say it's not that bad at all, there's almost no dull moments and it's packed with some funny outrageous performances mostly from Justin Pierce and the crippled long hair guy, this film has brutality...It's not the best film ever made but it's fun. Justin Pierce's character reminds me of David Hess from Last House On The Left being nuts and being a complete sleeze bag lol. Like I said, fun little film.
