Over the past three decades, sketch comedy group The State has created an MTV series, a comedy album, a book, and a CBS special in addition to several spinoff projects like Reno 911!, Viva Variety, Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, Risk!, and Children’s Hospital. But the logistics of bringing the large troupe back together for a tour were always too daunting to even consider until just a few months ago when the SAG strike cleared off their calendars for the foreseeable future.

After doing a lot of work in the comedy genre – Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The State, Viva Variety, Upright Citizens Brigade, Wet Hot American Summer, Reno 911!, Superbad, Pineapple Express, Paul, Role Models, Wanderlust, I Love You, Man… the list is long – Joe Lo Truglio has decided to make his feature directorial debut with a horror film called Outpost. Gravitas Ventures gave the film a theatrical and VOD release in the US back in May (you can find it on Amazon at This Link), and now Lightbulb Film Distribution has announced that they’ll be bringing Outpost to the UK and Ireland on September 11th with a digital and VOD release. The movie will then be given the same sort of release in Australia and New Zealand on September 13th.
Also scripted by Lo Truglio, Outpost has the following synopsis: After a violent assault, a woman asks her best friend for help escaping an abusive ex.

Vivian Trimble, co-founding member and keyboardist of the New York City rap-rock group Luscious Jackson, died on April 4th. She was 59.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved friend and band member Viv on Tuesday,” surviving Luscious Jackson members Jill Cunniff, Gabby Glaser, and Kate Schellenbach wrote on social media. “She had been in treatment for cancer for several years and developed a complication on Monday. We were not expecting this. She was a great friend and a gifted musician and choreographer, but it was being a partner to David and a mother to Nate and Rebecca that gave her the greatest joy. We are devastated beyond words to lose our graceful sister.”
Vivian Elizabeth Trimble was born on May 24th, 1963 to musician parents and was raised between the US and France. After attending Oberlin College, she moved to New York and began teaching Ged classes. Through...

I used to love the sketch comedy series The State on MTV. Multiple veterans of that show went on to create the Comedy Central series Viva Variety and Reno 911!, both of which I watched here and there. The creators of those shows, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, are back with Hell Baby, a movie spoofing horror films like Rosemary's Baby, The Omen, and The Exorcist. While other spoofs like Scary Movie and A Haunted House focus on the current trends in horror like Paranormal Activity and...

Comedians D.L. Hughley and Michael Ian Black have signed on to host the TBS original series from Mark Burnett’s One Three Media and London-based Monkey. Trust Me, I’m A Game Show Host has a bit of a twist in which the two hosts duel to deceive contestants. “This is a game show where a host is legitimately trying to convince a contestant to choose the wrong answer,” said Burnett. “D.L. and Michael’s comedic styles are perfect for pulling this off”. Hughley and Black will each present the single contestant with a bizarre and seemingly implausible fact, one of which is true, the other of which is not. The contestant must then choose the true fact to be rewarded in the game. The players who prove themselves to be super-human lie detectors will go home with a cash prize. Burnett and Monkey founders Will MacDonald and David Granger serve as executive producers.

For many, independent film is synonymous with movies that deal with depressing subject matter Hollywood is too timid to tackle. And given the Sundance Film Festival's stature as the world's most important independent film festival, those same people probably see the annual Park City event as one where only sad works come to nest.
Well, they couldn't be further from the truth. Because for every dreary Sundance hit like "Like Crazy" or "Precious," there are countless ones like "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Clerks" that provide a sense of joy in place of a good cry. With this year's edition of the festival just days away from launching, here's our list of the ten least depressing-sounding movies premiering in Park City.
1. 'Austenland'
"Napoleon Dynamite" co-writer Jerusha Hess makes her filmmaking debut with this romantic comedy sure to appeal to — you guessed it — Jane Austen fanatics. In it, "Felicity" star Keri Russell stars as Jane,...

David Wain is a catnip amongst a class of comedy nerds of the Best Week Ever generation, who grew up on bootlegged VHS copies of The State and followed the troupe’s subsequent diaspora into Viva Variety, Reno 911, and Stella. But you don’t need to be able to to recite Wet Hot American Summer by heart or fully understand what it means to be a comedy trio powered by the premise of “Ids in suits” to find him entertaining. Wain can be funny for everyone. That’s why the internet at large should join Michael Ian black in being all jazz hands about the Season 5 premiere of Wainy Days. The My Damn Channel original web series starring, created, and written by Wain first debuted n 2007. It’s storyline hasn’t changed much since. Each installment features an exaggerated version of the now 42-year-old Wain - who works in a...

Another week of Chuck goes by that fails to impress our tough critic, but that sure doesn't mean the rest of our Round Table gave up on the episode!
Your weekly Chuckers are back to dissect "Chuck Versus the Muuurder" with its simple Clue-based plot and Subway promos in our weekly Round Table:
1. Favorite Chuck quotes of the evening?
Dan F: Jeff's strange philosophy of karma and food: "If you love something, let it go. And if it comes back, you can eat it."
Dr. Toboggan: I think with all the product placement talk lately my favorite moment was yet another shameless Subway plug from Big Mike. His describing the delicious southwestern chipotle sauce as "muy caliente" and comparing it to Morgan's mom had me cracking up.
Eric H: Definitely everyone's shock upon learning that our bombs expert got an accent after one semester abroad. Hate blokes like that.
2. Chuck Clue mystery: cool or lame?...

Over three years ago, on one of the first episodes of Stella's very own, The Michael Showalter Showalter, Showalter talks to the post-Dog-Bites-Man-pre-The-Hangover comedian about dipping tobacco and Fiona Apple. It's a silly conversation with a deadpan facade that's always on the verge of cracking should one of them get a case of the Jimmy Fallon giggles. With the help of CollegeHumor, Showalter went onto release nine more installments of The Michael Showalter Showalter, firmly establishing himself as a progenitor of the now very popular faux-comedian-talk-show genre of web series. But the last Showalter episode was released nine months ago, and a certain class of comedy nerds - the kids who, in the wild days before YouTube, bootlegged VHS copies of The State and followed the former MTV sketch troupe’s diaspora to Comedy Central shows like Viva Variety and Reno 911 - want to know what he's been up to since.

Someone has turned the clocks back to the ’80s. Sequels, 3D, and Cheech and Chong-style stoner movies are running rampant in Hollywood again. Sometimes they make sense and money at the box office, but I can’t wrap my head around A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, a 3D stoner sequel.
This installment starts with Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) on the outs, which stems from Harold’s plans to grow up and Kumar’s desire to stay the latent-adolescent whose life revolves primarily around getting high. The two are reunited in their quest to find the perfect Christmas tree after the one Harold’s father-in-law brought to town is destroyed in a pot-related fire. It’s at the start of this journey that we meet Todd (to be played by Thomas Lennon of “Viva Variety,” “Reno 911″ and “The State”) and Adrian (presumably Patton Oswalt) — replacement friends for Harold...

They say part of the "thrill" of Nascar is the potential that there will be wrecks. Fans put up with hours upon hours of left turns and deafening noise for the possibility of carnage. But what if they kicked it up a notch and featured explosions? "Split/Second" hopes to answer that question.
The Basics
In a slightly more violent parallel reality, "Split/Second" is a hit TV show ("Watched by over a billion people!") that features a squad of elite racers running through stunt courses littered with explosions, shortcuts, debris and the occasional helicopter dropping artillery on your hood. If you can outrace, outmaneuver and outlast the other master drivers on the various courses, you too can join the cast of "Split/Second."

Comedy Central is eyeing former New Line executive Kent Alterman as head of original programming.
The cable channel is closing a deal with Alterman to succeed departing president of original programming and development Lauren Corrao, contingent on him being released from his producing contract with Fox's film division.
Alterman and Michael Aguilar launched a company, Dos Tontos, in February, and are in the middle of a two-year exclusive feature deal at Fox, where they have several projects in development.
A decision on Alterman's future is expected as early as Tuesday.
For Alterman, the Comedy Central gig would represent a return to the network where he served as East Coast development before joining New Line in 2001. He served as an executive producer on several Comedy Central series including "Strangers With Candy," "Upright Citizens Brigade" and "Viva Variety."
Alterman started off as a writer-director-producer, spending two years with Michael Moore on "TV Nation.

Chicago – It’s a vastly overused phrase in criticism, but MTV’s “The State” truly was ahead of its time. I remember seeing the show in its original broadcast on MTV and thinking it was like nothing else on television. Now it would easily fit in the comedy landscape. After years of begging, fans of “The State” are finally being given a complete series set and it was worth the wait.
Perhaps one of the reasons that “The State” feels so ahead of its time is the frequency with which its cast members pop up in film and television now. The cast of “The State” would go on to work together on shows like “Stella,” “Viva Variety,” and “Reno 911!” and films like “Wet Hot American Summer” and “The Ten,” but they would also find massive success apart from the whole troupe.

Thomas Lennon takes his comedy very seriously, even when it's painful. Take perhaps his most famous role, as Lt. Jim Dangle, the macho police officer -- with the trademark mustache, highlighted hair, and tiny, tiny tight shorts -- he plays on the comedy series Reno 911!, now entering its sixth season on Comedy Central. Lennon is also the creator, director, and writer of the show (with Robert Ben Garant) and came up with Dangle's costume -- a decision he has mixed feelings about. "Obviously, if I had known the show would go 88 episodes, I would have picked something else to wear," Lennon says. "I joke about it; but to be completely honest, it really, really, really hurts your balls. A lot." He pauses a moment, before adding in a perfect deadpan, "On the flip side, it's nice to know that I've traded my entire adult life to be a moderately amusing,...
