Jake Gyllenhaal Looks Back on His First Role in City Slickers: 'It Was an Interesting, Very Complicated Time'

7 April 2016 8:00 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Long before Jake Gyllenhaal hit it big as a troubled teen in Donnie Darko or a cowboy romancing Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain, he played a bashful young boy in 1991's City Slickers, so embarrassed by his father's humdrum ad job that he introduced him as a submarine commander to his class. But while City Slickers didn't grant Gyllenhaal much screen time, the experience elicits a vivid recollection for the actor even 25 years later. "There's a lot from my childhood that I don't remember, and I remember everything from that," he tells People and Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Jess Cagle »

Jean-Marc Vallée's wrecking ball of a movie, Demolition, written by Bryan Sipe, stars Jake Gyllenhaal with Naomi Watts, Chris Cooper, Judah Lewis and Heather Lind in a world of loss and destructive confrontations. At Essex House, Jake Gyllenhaal said he loves Chris Cooper's brutal honesty since Joe Johnston's October Sky, David Fincher's work ethic on Zodiac and A Single Man director Tom Ford's script for Nocturnal Animals with Amy Adams, Michael Shannon and Isla Fisher and questions having a Gene Kelly moment. Chris Cooper compares Benedict Cumberbatch's maternal instinct to his own in John Wells' drama August: Osage County with Meryl Streep and Sam Shepard as head of household. Watch Jake Gyllenhaal Describe His Disastrous Audition for 'The Lord of the Rings'

22 March 2016 10:00 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Can you imagine Jake Gyllenhaal as a hobbit? The actor auditioned for the part of Frodo for the Lord of the Rings trilogy back in the early years of his career, and of course he didn't get the part. But it wasn't just a matter of Elijah Wood being better for the role. As Gyllenhaal tells it, he specifically wasn't cast because he was, according to Peter Jackson, "the worst actor I have ever seen." That sounds a bit harsh, but apparently the now Oscar-nominated Gyllenhaal had some very excited but also very bad agents at the time, and they failed to properly prepare their young star -- at the time best known for October Sky, if anything -- by forgetting to tell him he needed to do an English accent.  Watch Gyllenhaal tell Jimmy Fallon of his...

Watch: Mark Buchanan's Rocket Launch Short 'Boldly Gone' in Full

3 February 2016 4:35 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"So much space, so little time." As always, it's nice to come across a short film that puts you in a good mood by the end. Boldly Gone is a short written & directed by Mark Buchanan that has been playing on the film festival circuit most of last year. It's finally online in full (running time of 12 minutes) for free and it's worth watching if you've ever built your own rocket from scratch (I remember building one in middle school and at Cub Scouts back when). The film is about two estranged brothers who try to figure out how to launch a rocket with their father's ashes into space. It reminds me of October Sky, with Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickam, who builds his own model rockets while Wernher von Braun is working on the Apollo program.
