I don't care for El Brendel. His Scowhegian dullard was pretty popular from the 1920s, when he had a major role in WINGS, through television in the 1960s, but I usually find him simply annoying. That's probably why I enjoy this movie, in which he plays a foolish porter on a ship carrying ammunition and German spies. The captain, played by Bud Jamison, has a similar opinion and kicks him several times. I certainly sympathize.... with Jamison.
The script, by director Jules White's big brother Jack, is pretty good, although there are the usual blinkworthy bits scattered throughout. Nonetheless script and direction take advantage of the strengths of the comics and El does take a fall fairly well. If you like El Brendel you'll probably love it and even if you don't, but have a fondness for Jules White's brand of hard-knock slapstick, you'll like it.
