Inside Nazi Germany (1938)
In Volume 4, No. 6, The March of Time producers released their first single-subject issue, a journalistic exposition of the Nazi reign in 1938 Germany, with newsreel cuts of Adolf Hitler, the Fuehrer; propaganda minister Paul Joseph Goebbles; and Fritz Kuhn, the President of the German-American Bund. The M-o-T cameras poked behind the air of prosperity in Berlin to reveal the persecution of the Jews; the manufacturing of military equipment, and the build-up of the goose-stepping army. It also shifts to New England where the opposition to Fritz Kuhn's American-German Bund is shown. William E. Dodd, the retiring American ambassador to Germany is seen and heard delivering a Nazi-criticism speech.- Written by Les Adams <email@example.com>
This edition of the March of Time series was dedicated solely to the evolution and current status (in 1938) of Nazi Germany. It does not mince words, describing the cost citizens have to pay for living in a Fascist state. It deals with the propaganda and outright lies emanating from the government-controlled media, the maltreatment of Jews, Germany's stated aim of needing to expand its territory (the Ukraine is specifically mentioned as a target of German expansionism) if it is to become self-sufficient in food production and the way youth are trained from a young age to see the world through Nazi eyes. It also deals with the growing support in the US for Germany, showing citizens expressing dismay at this foreign intervention. Given its release date (January 1938) it is eerily accurate in seeing as inevitable conflict and war in Europe.- Written by garykmcd
