- "Plain Jane" is the Cinderella of the Belgrave studio. Jane has fallen in love with Shelley, the famous portrait painter. Shelley, in love with Miss Goelet, a rich heiress, refuses to consider Jane. Miss Goelet is a coquette, caring little for the artist. When Shelley learns that she is engaged to a foreign nobleman he denounces her, while Jane, with her mop, an unseen witness to the scene, looks on with joy. Shelley, determined to get a final answer, goes to the Goelet home and is treated with the sight of the girl in the arms of his rival. He departs in anger, realizing that his hopes are vain. Meanwhile, Plain Jane, having found the dress and hat in the studio that the heiress posed in, puts them on. When she fixes her hair and puts the hat on there is a wonderful transformation; the drudge becomes the woman of the world, so far as appearances are concerned. Shelley arrives. Plain Jane, in trying to escape, trips and falls from the top of the stairs to his bottom. Shelley is struck by her beauty. After carrying her to his room he is surprised to find that the seeming society woman is none other than Plain Jane. This is the beginning of the end of Plain Jane as a drudge, with a delightful romance following.—Moving Picture World synopsis
