In Spain, it's Pedro Almodovar's El Deseo. In Germany, it's X Filme." That statement, made by the head of a leading U.S. indie distributor at this year's Cannes film festival, sums up why Berlin-based X Filme Creative Pool -- which turned 10 years old this week -- remains a primary port of call for international acquisitions execs. From such break-out hits as Run, Lola, Run and Good bye, Lenin! to art house notables including Love in Thoughts, Heaven and Life Is All You Get, X Filme has broken free of the confines of the German market to find a worldwide audience for its eclectic, director-driven films. »

Tykwer sniffs at 'Perfume' at Constantin

14 January 2004 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

BERLIN -- German director Tom Tykwer is circling Perfume -- The Story of a Murderer, the big-budget epic from Germany's Constantin Film based on the best seller by Patrick Sueskind. Constantin Film production head Martin Moszkowicz said Tuesday that Tykwer (Run Lola Run) was working on a new version of the Perfume script with screenwriter Andrew Birkin (The Name of thhe Rose) and producer Bernd Eichinger. Moszkowicz said Constantin was "in talks" with Tykwer to direct but that nothing has been signed yet. Difficulties in adapting Sueskind's book have been cited by those near Constantin for delays in packaging the film. The novel, which has sold about 12 million copies worldwide, tells the story of a boy born with an extraordinary sense of smell who becomes a murderer in order to distill the essence of beauty into a perfect perfume. »
