Film critic Gore sets indie parody

13 November 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Film Threat critic Chris Gore has turned writer-producer with the feature My Big Fat Independent Movie, a parody of the indie film world starring Paget Brewster, Neil Barton and Eric Hoffman. Described by Gore as being in the vein of the Scary Movie franchise, Fat includes satirical takes on such indie fare as Amelie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Memento, Secretary, Pulp Fiction, Run Lola Run, Swingers and others. Gore co-wrote the Fat screenplay with Adam Schwartz and Yoni Berkovits. Philip Zlotorynski is helming the project, in production with locations in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Fat is being financed through Aloha Pictures. "The film is a love letter to the indie community and those who take the kinds of risks that Hollywood traditionally avoids. It's a low-brow comedy for the high-brow crowd," Gore said. Zlotorynski's credits include the short films Sway and Walkentalk. »

'Lenin!' claims nine Lolas; SPC acquires for U.S.

9 June 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

BERLIN -- Sony Pictures Classics has given the big hello to Wolfgang Becker's Good Bye Lenin! picking up domestic distribution for the tragicomedy on the eve of the picture's sweep of the German Film Prizes. Good Bye Lenin! won a record nine awards including best picture and best director. The deal rejoins SPC with Lenin producers X Filme Creative Pool following their success in releasing Tom Tykwer's crossover smash Run Lola Run stateside. That film launched X Filme onto the international scene and established Tykwer as a director to watch. The Berlin-based production house is hoping for a similar snowball effect with Lenin and Becker. "We are looking forward to working with our friends at Sony Pictures Classics again to try to exceed our mutual U.S. success of Run Lola Run," said X Filme co-head Stefan Arndt. "They have proven time and again that no other studio can match their experience in launching a foreign film in the States." Lenin has been a runaway boxoffice success in Germany, outpacing blockbusters like The Matrix Reloaded and X2: X-Men United to become the country's top film of the year, taking in more than $35 million so far. Bavaria Film International, which is handling foreign sales on the picture, has closed Lenin deals for 63 territories. »
