'Babylon Berlin' Sets Ratings Record for Germany's Sky

19 October 2017 3:13 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

Babylon Berlin, a big-budget 1920s crime series co-directed by Run Lola Run's Tom Tykwer, is a hit in Germany.

Sky Deutschland, which is part of pan-European pay TV giant Sky and premiered the series in Germany last week, says 1.19 million people watched the show's first episode, a record for the network.

Just under half of those caught the show on Sky's linear network, with the rest watching on catch-up or on-demand services. The figure marks the best-ever start for a new series on Sky. The company, Germany's largest pay TV player, has around 5 million subscribers.

The Essential Jared Leto Films

4 October 2017 7:35 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Tom Jolliffe looks at the essential Jared Leto films…

Concluding our build up to Blade Runner 2049 with a series of essentials on the principal cast, we finish with Jared Leto. A musician/actor who seems to have been around for a while now, ageless and when perusing his CV you will find that he’s not done quite as many films as you’d think. Needless to say though, he doesn’t merely flit in every now and again between music just on a whim. Leto takes the acting craft incredibly seriously and has been known in a number of roles to be intensely method in his approach.

So, as I itch with bated breath to see Blade Runner 2049, here is (in no particular order) the essential Jared Leto.

Requiem for a Dream

Leto doesn’t often headline. He’s the antagonist, the support man and a chameleon-esque character actor. »

‘Never Let Go’ Review

Stars: Angela Dixon, Nigel Whitmey, Lisa Eichhorn, Velibor Topic, Heather Peace, Rami Nasr, Sarah Perles, Samantha Bolter, Michael Xavier, Glenn Salvage, Sanita Simms, Darcie Lincoln | Written and Directed by Howard J. Ford

How best to describe Never Let Go? How about a movie that feels like Paul Greengrass directed Taken, with a kick-ass leading female of T2 Linda Hamilton proportions…

In truth, in my humble opinion Never Let Go is actually way better than those Taken movies. I know, I know, I liked them when they first came out as well, but this movie completely took me by surprise… In the best possible way. Ladies and Gents, Angela Bloody Dixon. This leading lady is fantastic, she grips the viewer by the balls and takes you on a thrilling, tour de force ride, leaving you wondering exactly how far would you go for your kids.

So I guess I should give »

Franka Potente Stars In New Pro-Vegan Campaign

14 August 2017 10:30 AM, PDT | Look to the Stars | See recent Look to the Stars news »

Bourne Identity and Run Lola Run actor Franka Potente has teamed up with PETA Germany for a new ad and video campaign, in which she shares that going vegan three years ago changed her life.

“I went vegan for health reasons,” she says in the video. “My choice was to either take medication that I didn’t want to take or change the way I eat. And I love a good challenge, so I walked out of the doctor’s office vegan.”

“I felt different pretty much immediately,” continues the German-born Taboo star. “I always had trouble with lingering throat inflammation, and I got rid of that immediately, and my skin cleared up. I slept better.” Now, she’s encouraging others to do the same: “Try it out and see how you feel. If you feel better after a week, try another week.”

Watch the First 'Happy Death Day' Trailer, a Horror Twist on 'Groundhog Day'

15 June 2017 6:00 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Groundhog Day popularized the idea of a character (Bill Murray) forced to relive the same day over and over again. The movie was very funny, but also sweet, poignant and romantic.  Ever since then, filmmakers have been drawn irresistibly to the tantalizing premise, adding their own distinctive spins, as in the terrific Run Lola Run, Timecrimes, Source Code, Edge of Tomorrow and this year's Before I Fall. The horror genre has been well-represented as well, with titles like Camp Slaughter, Triangle and Haunter. Now a new approach to the premise is on its way. Happy Death Day starts with a young woman waking up in a college dorm room with no memory of how she got there. Soon enough, however, she discovers that her life is in danger if she can't solve a horrible...

According to ChinaFilmInside (via The Playlist), Road Pictures have acquired the rights to Tom Tykwer’s 1998 cult classic Run Lola Run, and are developing a Mandarin-language remake of the film.

The site reports that Zhu Zhu (Marco Polo, Cloud Atlas) is set to star and produce the film, which will presumably transport the action from Germany to China.

Glasgow Frightfest 2017: Chris Smith Interview

20 February 2017 8:01 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film Detour at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow, Chris Smith tells us the importance of FrightFest, his love of ‘film Noir’ and  his hatred of reality TV…

FrightFest has premiered all your genre movies Creep, Severance, Triangle, Black Death, except Get Santa obviously. Is this positioning an important part of the rollout process for you?

Firstly let me apologise for being away for so long and thank you for having me back. I wrote Get Santa because I’d just had a son and was feeling like I wanted to do something that he could watch in the next 15 years. I expected the film to take a year to come together but it ended up taking four years. My son was by that time old enough to come to the premiere with a few of his class mates.

Back to the question, Frightfest is extremely important, »
