Although still reeling from the failed domestic launch of “Battleship,” Universal still believes in the premise of toys-as-movies, and has entered negotiations to acquire the rights to Lego's robotic toy line Hero Factory. You'd be forgiven for having tuned out of, or indeed never ventured near, Fox's Zooey Deschanel-starring sitcom "New Girl." The series, about an oddball girl who moves in with three male housemates, had a generic premise, an infuriating ad campaign, and a very patchy first few episodes. But over time, it's very much found its foot: the writing's gotten sharp and very funny, the direction's been strong (thanks to a selection of indie talent including John Hamburg, Miguel Arteta, Jesse Peretz, Lynn Shelton, and Nanette Burnstein) and the cast have gelled into an impressive comic ensemble. It's not going to change your life or anything, but it's steadily evolved into a highly enjoyable show.
First and foremost among the cast is Max Greenfield, who plays progressive douchebag Schmidt on the show. Starting out as a stereotype, the character's gotten richer and weirder over time, and Greenfield, a familiar face »

After we see Chris Pine finally reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek 2, it looks like the actor will be taking a step away from big budget filmmaking and into the Diy zone. He's co-written and will star in a movie called Mantivities, a comedy about a bunch of guys in their early thirties who are basically overgrown children, and how they all must come together when it's time for one of them to truly grow up.
Deadline has the story, and they report that Pine wrote the film with his friends Will Greenberg, Drew Howerton, Robert Baker, Ian Gotler and Tony Liebetrau. Michael Patrick Jann will be sitting in the director's chair on this one, and if you're not familiar with that name, don't worry - you're not alone. But we can put our doubts to rest when we take a look at his filmography, »

A good barometer for one’s success level in Hollywood is if you have enough money to get all of your best buds together, write a screenplay then produce it into a feature film. Star Trek star Chris Pine must be at the top of his game, cause he has done just that for a new independent comedy.
Deadline reports that actor will be making his producing and writing debut in a film titled Mantivities, which he wrote with his friends Will Greenberg, Drew Howerton, Robert Baker, Ian Gotler and Tony Liebetrau. Pine will also star in the film that doesn’t seem to stray far from their real lives, as it follows a group of best buds in their 30s, who are “all in various stages of permanent adolescence.” The plot follows them attempting to assist one in their group to grow up.

Chris Pine knows that men will be boys.
The "Star Trek" star will soon be trying his hand at indie comedy as he's signed on to headline "Mantivities," according to Deadline.
"Mantivities" focuses on a group of thirtysomething friends, all in various stages of permanent adolescence. They get together with the aim of helping one of them grow up — and, in the process, we're imagining that all of them do.
This is something of a personal project for Pine, as he also co-wrote the script — along with five of his pals: Will Greenberg, Drew Howerton, Robert Baker, Ian Gotler and Tony Liebetrau. Might it be safe to assume that the main characters will all bear some sort of passing resemblance to the scribes that created them?
"I couldn't be happier to begin the adventure of making 'Mantivities' knowing how much fun we all had writing it," Pine said. "Somehow I »

Ken Marino (Childrens Hospital) is starring in Yahoo's latest original: mock-reality series Burning Love, which is slated to premiere on the Yahoo! Comedy Channel June 4th. One part The Bachelor, one part Horrible People, Burning Love follows hunky fireman Mark Orlando (Marino) in his search for the perfect partner in a faux elimination-style reality show. Teeming with irony, Burning Love features all the accoutrements you'd expect from a network reality series: from champagne toasts, candles, heartbreak, bubble baths, chocolate, choreography, hair extensions, roller skating, betrayal, and spray-tans. "Mark Orlando is used to feeling the heat of fire," says the narrator in the series trailer. "But now he's looking for someone to ignite the flames of love." The trailer features Ben Stiller, the series' executive producer along with fellow Red Hour producers Stuart Cornfeld and Mike Rosenstein, as well as Abominable Pictures’ Jonathan Stern, Marino, and Erica Oyama. The series will »

Director David Wain has been a big name in the alternative comedy scene for a long time due to his work on The State and Stella, but he’s still looked at as something of a neophyte in the world of feature films. He’s directed one cult hit with his weird summer camp spoof Wet Hot American Summer, and one mainstream hit with his criminals-turned-mentors movie Role Models; but his last film, Wanderlust, kind of came and went with only a whimper. Let’s just chalk that up to the fact that it had Jennifer Aniston in the lead, though. Has anyone ever heard of a comedy she was in making any money? Undaunted by the terrors of possible obscurity, Wain is going back to the drawing board and putting together another project. Variety has word that it’s a comedy called They Came Together, and that it comes from a screenplay that has deep roots »

When talking about the best comedic stars of today, it's hard to find one that isn't in some way connected to David Wain. Thanks to his work on The State, Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models, The Ten and Wainey Days, the writer/director has worked with almost every single comedy star today, including Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd. Long before the two actors were facing off against one another on Parks and Recreation they were both part of the ensemble cast that made up Wet Hot American Summer. And now Wain is bringing them back together on the big screen once again. Variety reports that Rudd and Poehler are now set to star together in a romantic comedy parody called They Came Together. The project is being produced by Lionsgate, which is a change for Wain, as his last two films - Role Models and Wanderlust - were made »

David Wain is not for everyone. I say that as an enormous compliment, because when I meet someone who shares my affinity for his inane comedy, I know I’ve met a kindred spirit. His films have graduated from cult novelty (Wet Hot American Summer) to the comic mainstream (Role Models and Wanderlust) but he still embraces the nonsensical. David Wain lives by the comic rule that when you run into trouble and you’re about to lose the room, double down on the gag. A little might not be funny, but total commitment has redemptive comic value. It’s »

We're the holdouts. Every married couple we know has kids or is having kids or is trying to make kids. My wife and I were one of the first couples we knew to get married and we almost definitely will be the last to become parents. In his recent memoir, You're not doing it right, Michael Ian Black (actor, writer, co-founder of The State, Sierra Mist pitchman, and former VH1 pundit-in-residence) perfectly sums up how my wife and myself and many other otherwise responsible adults feel about parenthood: self-absorbed disgust and absolute pants-shitting terror. »

"Secrets," tonight's episode of Fox's Zooey Deschanel comedy (is that its own genre?) "New Girl" was directed by David Wain, who on Twitter reminded the world that "Tonight's your chance to see how I pulled the puppet strings of @ZooeyDeschanel et al." Wain, whose latest big-screen directing effort "Wanderlust" opened in theaters in February, has mostly kept to directing his own work on TV, with "Stella," "The State" and "Children's Hospital," though he did also helm the community theater episode of the late, lamented "Party Down." "New Girl" has managed to bring in a nice array of indie-ish comedy directors to oversee episodes of its first season. Lynn Shelton ("Humpday"), Miguel Arteta ("Chuck & Buck," "Cedar Rapids") and Jesse Peretz ("Our Idiot Brother") have also directed episodes, and Jake Kasdan »

After working together on such comedic endeavors as "The State" and "Reno 911!," writers and comedians Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant also found success as screenwriters with films like the Night at the Museum and the forthcoming telling of how Nicolas Cage lost his prize Action Comics #1 featuring the debut of Superman. Now the duo are poised to make their directing debut, working from their own script, for a horror comedy called Hell Baby. Variety reports Leslie Bibb and Rob Corddry will lead the film as an expectant couple who enlist the aid of the Vatican's elite exorcism team to save them from a demonic baby. Lennon and Garant will also play the exorcism team who heads to the couples' recently purchased New Orleans fixer-upper which also just happens to be haunted. Filming is expected to begin next month, and this is exactly the kind of film I hope Garant »

Despite their writing work on shows like The State and Reno 911!, as well as blockbusters like the Night at the Museum films, comedic duo Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant have yet to get behind the camera for a feature film. That is all about to change as Darko Entertainment and Principato-Young Entertainment announced today that they are planning their directorial debut, titled Hell Baby.
The dark comedy will star Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb as a newly married couple who are expecting their first child as they move into a haunted New Orleans house. Fearing a demonic baby, they call on an exorcism team from The Vatican, played by Lennon and Garant. It sounds like a mix of Ghostbusters and any number of horror exorcism films, but I’m excited to see how they make this concept funny.

Writer/director Robbie Pickering
Writer/director Robbie Pickering has settled into the Film Independent family in more ways than one over the past six years and this Friday is a bit of a graduation ceremony as his film, Natural Selection, makes it’s way to theaters across the country. Pickering has participated in Film Independent’s Artist Development Labs – including Directors Lab, Screenwriting Lab and Fast Track – since 2006 and his film has made a successful festival run, culminating in numerous awards and a Spirit Award nomination for “Best First Feature”. Starting today, March 16, audiences will be able to take a road trip with a dutiful (and barren) Christian housewife (Spirit Award nominated Rachael Harris) rambling through a tragic season of her life with her husband’s just-discovered biological son, a foul-mouthed ex-con, on the big screen. What results has been called “magical alchemy“. Pickering took some time to speak to »

Michael Ian Black is a founding member of two -- Two! -- cult comedy troupes, The State and Stella. He is also an author of books for both children and adults, and most recently, in commercials, "the Expedia Guy." Last year, he completed a national stand-up comedy tour. He is a true show biz dilettante, and he's really good at all of it.
His latest book, You're Not Doing It Right: Tales of Marriage, Sex, Death, and Other Humiliations, takes on darker, more real material. Michael writes candidly about his childhood: being raised by his gay mom and her partner, sharing a room with his ill sister, and a very touching retelling of his father's death and funeral. He has the unmitigated gall to assert that, often, marriage sucks and kids are assholes. He's also not afraid to expose, hilariously, that there are no career guarantees in show biz. You're »

Lionsgate has greenlit Action No. 1, a new comedy-heist movie from Reno 911 co-creators and The State alums Thomas Lennon & Robert Ben Garant based around the real-life 2000 disappearance of Nicolas Cage’s prized Superman #1 comic book. We’re the biggest Nic Cage fans on the bloc, but The Hollywood Reporter article also drops this bombshell: The part of Cage was written with the real Cage in mind, but at this stage, it’s unlikely that Cage will play himself. Whaaat??? First off, this assumes that Nic Cage possesses the capacity to turn down roles, which is highly questionable, but more importantly, if the film can’t get the real Nicolas Cage to play himself, there really is only one acceptable replacement out there: That’s right – Andy Samberg. If the film casts Samberg, really only two things can happen, and they’re both great: 1) The threat of Andy Samberg playing a cartoonish »
