The Return Of 'Ever After'

15 May 2012 11:25 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

New York -- There will apparently be back-to-back Cinderella stories on Broadway in the coming seasons.

Producers announced Tuesday plans to bring a new musical based on the Drew Barrymore film "Ever After" in the 2013-14 season under the direction and choreography of Kathleen Marshall.

"Ever After" will feature music by Zina Goldrich and a book and lyrics by Marcy Heisle, who also are teaming up for "The Great American Mousical" at the Goodspeed Opera House.

The story is set in 16th century France, where a young noble woman learns to stand up to her scheming stepmother, befriends Leonardo Da Vinci and wins over a French prince.

It will follow a production of "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" on Broadway, which is slated for next season with an updated book by Douglas Carter Beane. »

Collider Goes to the Set of Sparkle Starring Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks

8 May 2012 11:15 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It was just in November when I traveled out to Detroit for a day on the set of Sparkle, Whitney Houston’s posthumous film about music, growing up in church, and finding your way.  A remake of the 70’s movie, it is set at the height of the civil rights movement and Motown boom in Detroit, and chronicles a family whose daughters form a singing group—modeled after The Supremes—and their journey to find success in uncertain times.   It is apparent that those in charge are dedicated to making the film authentic and successful. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks plays the title character Sparkle, the dark horse in the singing group.  Houston, in her anticipated return to the screen, stars as the girls’ mother.  Though the plot may feel familiar, after having talked extensively with the cast and crew, it is clear that there is a personality to this story. »

Jaimie Etkin: 'The Voice' Recap: Cee Lo And Adam Levine Send Two Home

23 April 2012 7:10 PM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

"The Voice" kicked off this week which a serious case of the giggles and what was to come was easily the most bizarre episode of this show ever. And that includes Cee Lo's wig, his group trip to the massage parlor and his serious fauxhawks.

Initially, we're not sure why the coadges are all fighting back laughter. But once we learn, we wish we had stayed uncertain. Turns out, Cee Lo is having some gas issues.

As irritable father figure Carson tells the coadges, "Let's focus here," Christina says, "Why do you think I got this fan?" Luckily for the pop star, she has a paper fan, while Cee Lo has a mini battery-operated one. Unfortunately, no one has that one you can get in Disney World that's a bottle with a fan head because clearly they're the coolest.

Anyway, as Carson says, "Let's focus." Christina tries to turn the »

Mouse House: Upcoming Blu-ray Titles from Disney To Be Released

2 April 2012 7:53 AM, PDT | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

It seems like these days the possibilities are endless in how film fans can enjoy their favorites at home, from renting through Netflix to downloading online via Amazon. But perhaps the most rewarding format – well, for this old-fashioned guy, at least – is to purchase the movie on Blu-ray. While many major studios – including Disney – have generally decreased the amount of bonus features and other special content offered on home video, this company consistently delivers an overall strong value to their Blu-ray releases. In this edition of the Mouse House, I’ll as share some thoughts on yet-to-be-released Blu-ray offerings.

Coming Soon (Announced)

Recently Disney announced over 30 titles from their library – some of them classics, others surprisingly forgettable – to be released on Blu-ray for the first time this year. Many also hold the title of “anniversary” editions, celebrating 10, 15, 20 years or more since their original debuts.

On the Disney side, get ready »

'Mirror Mirror' on the wall, who's most evil villainess of them all?

30 March 2012 3:45 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Once upon a time, Julia Roberts was America’s sweetheart. (Hell, at one point, she even starred in a movie called America’s Sweethearts.) But because nobody can stay an ingenue forever, the 44-year-old actress has officially aged into the next phase of her career — one that’s filled almost exclusively with Oscar bait (see the upcoming adaptations of The Normal Heart and August: Osage County) and campy roles like her turn in this weekend’s Mirror Mirror. Let’s call this stage “the Meryl Streep juncture.”

And as Mirror Mirror’s evil queen, Roberts has some wicked shoes to fill. »

Whitney Houston Biopic: Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks And More On Rumored Casting Short List (Poll)

28 February 2012 2:50 PM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

After Whitney Houston's death, how much time must pass to satisfy the requirements of decency and good taste before rampant speculation can begin over who will get to portray her in the inevitable biopic? Apparently, about two weeks. The derby began in earnest with an article in Monday's Daily Mail claiming that Rihanna is on top of the short list of singers and actresses who may star in a Houston biography produced by her mentor and longtime champion, record mogul Clive Davis. Also on that list, according to the British newspaper: Vivica A. Fox, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, and Willow Smith (who, presumably, has a lock on the portion of the movie devoted to Houston's preteen years). But there are other actresses who've tried to throw their hats into the ring as well, including Meagan Good and Brandy. Now, despite the thinly sourced Daily Mail article, it's not at »

Whitney Houston Honored By Congressional Black Caucus

15 February 2012 4:07 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Washington -- The Congressional Black Caucus will honor Whitney Houston with a resolution that will be sent to Houston's family in time for the late singer's funeral on Saturday, according to Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), chairman of the caucus.

The measure won't be the same kind of resolution that would normally go before the House and get voted on, he said. Instead, the document will come directly from the CBC and go directly to Houston's family, signed only by caucus members, at the family's request.

"It will probably look pretty official. Like you can buy downstairs," Cleaver told The Huffington Post, apparently referring to decorative documents sold in the basement of the Capitol complex. "I mean, it's not going to be shabbily sent to the family."

Cleaver said Houston's family asked that the caucus send something for the funeral. A spokeswoman for the caucus said later that »

Gathering momentum for this month's Oscars, black-and-white silent film The Artist last night won seven awards at Baftas 2012, one more than I had predicted.

It won Best Film - presented by a Down Under double act of Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe - along with Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius, pictured above), Leading Actor (Jean Dujardin), Original Music, Original Screenplay, Cinematography and Costume Design.

The Leading Actress accolade went to Meryl Streep, who lost a shoe as she stepped on to the stage to pick up the prize for her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. She revealed that her ancestors were - like Lady Thatcher herself - originally from Lincolnshire.

She said: "Half of me is Streep and the other half is Wilkinson from Lincolnshire so I come by it honestly, this part."

Celebrated American singer and actress Whitney Houston has died aged just 48 after being found unconscious in her room at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California yesterday afternoon. According to a statement from the police, there were "no obvious signs of criminal intent", and the cause of death is to be investigated.

Born in New Jersey in 1963, Houston began her musical career as a backing singer in the late-1970s and worked as a model before signing her first record deal in 1983, resulting in the release of her self-titled debut album two years later. Houston enjoyed huge success during the late 1980s, becoming one of the highest-earning and most celebrated singers of the decade, which led to a number of offers from Hollywood studios. She eventually made her feature acting debut in 1992, starring alongside Kevin Costner in the smash-hit The Bodyguard, which also spawned the hugely successful single, 'I Will Always Love You', »

She was only 48 years old. Houston was a model and a singer from a young age, having worked as a backup vocalist for Chaka Khan and Jermaine Jackson. Then in only five years she released three top-selling albums, including "Whitney Houston" (1985), "Whitney" (1987) and "I'm Your Baby Tonight" (1990), and quickly became one of the world's top entertainers. Whitney Houston Dies: Remembering Her Finest Onscreen Moment In 'The Bodyguard'

11 February 2012 6:12 PM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Whitney Houston, who passed away suddenly on Saturday afternoon at the age of 48, will be forever remembered as a once-in-a-generation singer, but Houston's work as an actress showed her incredible talents weren't limited to just the stage. Houston starred in three films between 1992 and 1996, working opposite Oscar-nominated actors like Kevin Costner, Denzel Washington and Angela Bassett. Her screen debut was as singer Rachel Marron in the smash-hit romance "The Bodyguard." The film was nominated twice in the Best Original Song category at the Academy Awards in 1993 (for "I Have Nothing" and "Run to You," both performed by Whitney), though the film's soundtrack is best remembered for Houston's cover of "I Will Always Love You," which spent a then-record 14 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The soundtrack for "The Bodyguard" is the biggest selling movie soundtrack ever, and won a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1994. Of course the film »

Rob Marshall to Direct Adaptation of Into the Woods

13 January 2012 6:40 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Director Rob Marshall may not be a fanboy favorite after Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides, but since that film earned over $1 billion at the box office, Disney is eager to work with him again. To that end, they've annouced that Marshall has been tapped to direct an adaptation of the Broadway hit Into the Woods for the studio. Written by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, the musical "intertwines several classic fairytale characters, including Cinderella, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood, with the story of a baker and his wife’s attempt to have a family." Interestingly, Lapine and Sondheim will be collaborating with Marshall on the project with the former penning the script and the latter expected to write new songs. Into the Woods will return Marshall to the genre that gave him success with Best Picture winner Chicago (although there's also Nine to consider as well...). So, »

Rob Marshall and Disney to Adapt Steven Sondheim's Into The Woods

11 January 2012 10:00 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Walt Disney Pictures and Rob Marshall are joining forces again on a new project. Marshall is set to direct a film adaptation of Steven Sondheim's acclaimed Broadway musical, Into The Woods. The project is being produced by Marshall and John DeLuca via their production company Lucamar Productions for Disney. James Lapine, who wrote the stage musical with Stephen Sondheim, is on board to adapt the story for the screen.

This project marks the first film under a new 2-year development deal between Disney and Lucamar. I am not familair with this play but know of Sondheim's work. Marshall continues to deliver blockbusters for Disney, and I am sure that this film will be a hit for the studio. There is a big trend of plays being turned into feature films. Tom Hooper (The Kings Speech) is currently working on Les Miserables.
