Storyline

Micky is a tough, loudmouth but lovable 12 year old who lives with his younger brother and sister at his grandmother's house. One day, a meteorite lands in his backyard and the kids believe that it was sent down to them by their dead parents (who they believe live up in the stars). The government ships away the rock and sends it to the local university. In the children's efforts to retrieve the meteor they believe is theirs, they meet a dorky scientist who finds a place in his heart for the kids. Meanwhile, Micky's parent's best friend, a drug addict (who had promised the parents to take care of the kids) owes drug dealers money and eventually has to hide out after barely escaping a hit. Trivia

According to an interview with Mike Myers on The Daily Show (1996), he worked with a dialect coach to learn a general Irish accent instead of the specific Dublin accent. When he did his first scene with Dubliner Ian Costello, Costello hated Myers' accent so much that he chased him off the set. Filming of Myers' scenes had to be delayed until he learned the accent from Dubliners. See more »

Quotes

Lily: [to kids objecting that the authorities took the meteor away] It's the law, right? The man explained everything to me. Anything that falls from the sky belongs to the law, alright.
Micky: I don't see them coming around here to claim all the rain and the pollution.

The Worst Movie Ever Made
1 May 2005 | by (Marin County, CA, US) – See all my reviews

Too bad Mike Meyers picked this for his dramatic debut. This film looks like it was put together by a committee that couldn't decide if it was a comedy, drama, suspense, or sci-fi. It starts out sort of playful, then quickly gets darker, and then at the end, apparently shortly after one of the main characters has been killed, the whole family is standing in the backyard laughing about something. It's totally weird and impossible to string together. The acting is extremely uneven, with the older professionals engaging your attention, and then the younger and less experienced actors looking like they are in a high school play. This movie showed me that it's probably harder to make a good movie than is evident from the truly professional fare we see in the first-run and art houses. This would be a good film for a film class to analyze. Plot, character, theme, consistency - they are all either faulty or missing from this film.
