According to an interview with Mike Myers on "The Daily Show" (1996), he worked with a dialect coach to learn a general Irish accent instead of the specific Dublin accent. When he did his first scene with Dubliner Ian Costello, Costello hated Myers' accent so much that he chased him off the set. Filming of Myers' scenes had to be delayed until he learned the accent from Dubliners.

One of those 'magical' Irish movies. DVD review.

A drug dealer (Myers) acts as guardian over three young orphans. However their granny (Fricker) does a better job. A scientist (Molina) wants to adopt the children after a meteorite lands in their garden.

Sure this sounded great on paper - kids' magical movie set in harsh Dublin 8 (Darley Terrace). But while the first twenty minutes were good the rest of the movie was lame. There's not enough of Myers (who looks restrained) and too much of goofy Molina. Also there's too much cutting back and forth between the same locations which gets tedious. I lost count of the number of scenes where the kids fight each other and Fricker enters the room to break it up. However there are some good scenes: I loved the opening shots of Dublin city and the best scene had a drunken Fricker shouting abuse at the local drug dealers. Another problem was that the movie was too grim for kids yet too childlike for adults. I can understand why it's so difficult to get on DVD.
