The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

Lord Farquaad is seen in bed, supposedly naked (nothing is shown below the chest), watching a slideshow of single princesses that would be candidates for him to marry.

There are a handful of kisses.

There are some sexual references during a scene describing three princesses. Such as for Snow White "even though she lives with several other men she's not easy"

Two characters flirt in several scenes; one includes references to physical relationships.

A female dragon falls in love with a donkey. A dragon kisses an ogre's bottom (by mistake) but the was aiming for the donkey.

A woman exposes some cleavage in a tight fitting gown.

Fiona points towards Shrek's lower regions and says "Looks like somebody has an e-Shrek-tion." This is a reference to an erection.

Some wooden puppets wear plumber's pants exposing painted bottom cleavage.

Segment (lyrics) of a song Robin Hood and his Merry Men sing: Robin Hood: I like an honest fight and a saucy little maid. Merry Men: What he's basically saying is he likes to get... Robin Hood: Paid! ... ... In addition, the rest of the lyrics in their song are somewhat suggestive on the topic of women. See this title's "memorable quotes" page.

On the DVD special features donkey sings a song referring to big behinds as a female dragon is seen shaking her behind sensuously.

Violence & Gore

Robin Hood and his men show up and he briefly holds a knife on Shrek. Fiona, however, goes into martial arts mode and takes out all of the men (with punches and kicks, etc.) with one of them shooting an arrow at her and Shrek. We then see that the arrow struck Shrek in the behind (no blood or gore, although she has to pull it out and we then see what looks like a tiny bit of blood on just the arrow).

A man is eaten by a dragon. This is mildly amusing.

A dragon chases villagers around a kingdom. The people are screaming.

In Fiona's castle their are many skeletons, armor of dead warriors, and varies bones of men killed by dragon. :(

Shrek and Fiona blow up a frog and a snake like balloons and let go of them floating up towards the sky. They both most likely died a slow and painful death.

Profanity

Several uses each of "damn" and "ass." but "ass" is generally used to describe Donkey.

In a deleted scene, Shrek tells Donkey to "go make his own fucking waffles."

[ After Farquaad announces that whoever kills Shrek will be announced champion of some contest, the ogre picks up a mug and asks why they can't settle this over a pint. When Farquaad refuses, Shrek quickly downs the ale. He then opens a spigot on a barrel that sends a torrent of ale toward his attackers, knocking them down. While Farquaad is in bed he is seen drinking a martini.

Several bongs are visible on Shrek's coffee table.

Shrek and Donkey smoke crystal meth at various points throughout the entire film.

When Shrek lets out a monstrous roar toward some villagers who've come after them, that might be a bit unsettling or even scary for some of the younger viewers (although he does so for fun to scare them away).

Shrek and the Donkey must cross over a rickety and swinging rope bridge that's over a river of lava hundreds of feet below them (Shrek isn't nervous, but the Donkey is scared, especially when Shrek starts shaking and swinging the bridge).

Once Shrek and the Donkey are inside the castle where Fiona lives, various sights inside it might be unsettling or scary for younger viewers. Among them are various skeletons of men who previously tried to rescue the Princess, the general decrepit and somewhat spooky looking state of the castle, and then the huge, fire-breathing dragon that chases after the Donkey, shooting fire at him and seemingly attempting to kill him. Later, however, they learn that the dragon is a girl who becomes smitten with the Donkey, so some of that scary edge is removed from it (although it later chases after them again).

At night Donkey goes into the windmill to see Fiona and the windmills overall atmosphere is spooky and possibly frightening to younger viewers, noises are coming out of the darkness that could scare others and Donkey is terrified until an ogre is revealed "The ogre is Fiona" then the ogre tries to calm donkey.
