Raymond Blanc's Christmas Special

8pm, BBC2

Having spent some 34 Christmasses in the UK, Raymond Blanc has developed an Anglo-French accord in his culinary outlook. For this five-course feast for family and friends, he uses English ingredients such as sprouts, chestnuts, golden goose and Cornish seafood, but prepared with a Gallic élan and finish. He embraces all the festive trimmings unabashedly, right down to the floppy red hat; even the decorations on his Christmas tree are edible. He also prepares a yuletide punch which makes you feel a wee bit tipsy just to watch via the cathode; steady on the whisky there, Ray. David Stubbs

'Puss in Boots' helmer Chris Miller on 'wishlist cast' being cat's meow [Video]

The nine-lived "Puss in Boots" has nine chances to win Annie Awards and the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. Victories there could make it a serious threat against "Rango" and "The Adventures of Tintin" at the Oscars. The "Shrek" spin-off starring the adorable, Antonio Banderas-voiced feline has an impressive $142 million domestic gross and and 86% approval rating from top critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Director Chris Miller tells senior editor Adam Waldowski he had thought Puss in Boots merited his own film for years. "I worked on 'Shrek 2,'" he explains, "and that's when the character was first introduced ... From the first time we saw Puss storyboarded, before he was even animated and on-screen, we knew there was something special about that character ... There were no rules with him." Miller thinks the voice behind the character makes him a scene stealer: "The persona that Antonio Band »

5 Reasons to stop at Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

15 December 2011 3:40 PM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

We've all seen it by now. The Kremlin collapses in smoke and flame, Tom Cruise flips up his hood and prepares to go underground, and enough scenery explodes to give Michael Bay night terrors. Thanks to its hugely popular trailer, a consensus has emerged that the fourth addition to the Mission: Impossible franchise will be the best. But should we choose to accept it?

Stretching an already thin concept over four films might seem a gamble too far for Cruise and his new Bff, producer Jj Abrams, but then Tom's no stranger to risky business. Will Mi:4 be an unlikely success? Or a box-office bomb so devastating the government will have to disavow its existence? Here's five reasons why this mission might really be impossible...

5. Four is not the magic number

The law of diminishing returns is a cruel mistress, so when the franchise cash-cow grows fat enough to sustain a fourth instalment, »

Sony Sets Co-Directors For Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2

14 December 2011 9:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Way back in April last year, a sequel to 2009’s Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs was announced, coming just a few months after the first film’s substantial success, turning Sony’s $100m. budget into just under $250m. at the box office, an incredibly impressive feat for the relatively new directing pair of Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Variety are reporting that Sony are once again turning to a relatively unknown duo to direct the sequel, in the form of Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, two Sony Animation artists who will be making their major debut with Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2.

Whilst I admit that I’m still yet to see the original, it looked brilliant when it came out two years ago, and had a lot of terrific talent lending their voices for the film, headed up by Bill Hader and Anna Faris, with Nil Patrick Harris, »

Groovy? Mike Myers Plotting 'Austin Powers' Stage Show Prequel

13 December 2011 6:25 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

As you might remember, late this summer, probably in an effort to revive a career that is for all intents and purposes dead, it was announced that Mike Myers was going to dust off the ugly dentures to play Austin Powers -- again -- in a fourth movie. Aside from his voicework in the "Shrek" series, Myers has become something of non-presence on the big screen popping up in a cameo in "Inglourious Basterds" after tanking hard with "The Love Guru." The cultural zeitgeist around all things retro seems to have died, but for whatever reason New Line seems to think this franchise still has life and if Myers has his way, "Austin Powers" is going to be bigger than ever. In addition to getting the fourth movie off the ground, THR reveals that Myers is planning a musical stage show and that "Book Of Mormon" co-director Casey Nicholaw will helm. »

Mike Myers Adapting Austin Powers for Broadway!

Canuck comedian Mike Myers closed the door on his tenure as the lovable green ogre in the Shrek franchise with the recent Shrek Forever After being billed as the last film. Myers quickly dusted off another popular character, the swinging sixties British spy Austin Powers. Page Six reported today that Myers made a commitment to develop and write a Broadway musical based on the first Austin Powers movie. It was Myers’ second shot at reviving Austin Powers in the last six months. Last summer, Myers announced plans to partner with director Jay Roach on Austin Powers 4, a return to the big screen as the bumbling spy for the first time in nine years, since his '70s-set action comedy Austin Powers in Goldmember co-starring Beyoncé Knowles. »

Another Earth (12A)

(Mike Cahill, 2011, Us) Brit Marling, William Mapother, Matthew-Lee Erlbach. 92 mins

It's been quite a year for cosmic arthouse, and like The Tree Of Life and Melancholia, this low-key indie contrasts inner and outer space to stirring effect. Unlike a Kubrick-style space odyssey, it's very much down to earth – Earth One, that is. "Earth Two", a duplicate of our own, is more like a giant metaphor in the sky. Its discovery tragically fuses the lives of two people, and could yet resolve it, which makes for a tender character drama with a shot of sci-fi ingenuity.

Puss In Boots (U)

(Chris Miller, 2011, Us) Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis. 90 mins

Between the Shrek brand recognition, the bright 3D, the broad-spectrum comedy and the prospect of cute cats dancing, it's hard to imagine a more mercilessly commercial proposition than this animated spin-off. It's a predictably polished affair, with Banderas's »

Puss In Boots review

Can Dreamworks’ Shrek spin-off bring us some festive magic? Here’s Simon’s review of the derivative yet charming Puss In Boots

Puss In Boots continues to find DreamWorks Animation demonstrating its unquestionable ability to impress, and fill the screen with fast, bright, technically brilliant work. Yet while it proves itself a fun blockbuster, not short on character or entertainment, it also concurrently demonstrates a lesser ability to genuinely surprise.

Set before we first met the title character in Shrek 2, the limelight here is firmly shone on Puss, voiced with charisma and a sense of real fun by Antonio Banderas (and he’s clearly having a ball here).

We don’t learn a great deal more about the character of Puss across the film’s running time, but he’s fun to be in the company of, and he’s animated superbly (it's hard to recall an animated film »

Annie Awards Nominations Led By Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots, Rango

5 December 2011 12:03 PM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

It's a strange year in the Oscar animated category, as there are so many sequels. The Annie Award nominations often become a bellwether of where the race could go. Thus Dreamworks had a very good day, as "Kung Fu Panda 2" led the field with twelve nominations, followed by DreamWorks' "Shrek" spin-off "Puss in Boots" and Paramount/Nickelodeon's "Rango," with nine each. Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" landed four nominations, for animated feature, writing, score and editing. It remains to be seen if the Academy animation branch will go for the performance capture film. See the full list below. »

Puss in Boots director Chris Miller on the animated hit

It.s been a decade since Puss in Boots was re-imagined in DreamWorks. animated hit Shrek. The character remains the same . charismatic, dangerous and passionate . but his world has a surreal edge, unlike the .fairy tale brought to life. realism in the original. .It was great to see that .oh wow., we could do something a little more surreal, a little stranger and ethereal and beautiful and not lose the character in all that,. director Chris Miller says, pointing to the scene where Puss in Boots (with companions Humpty Dumpty and Kitty Softpaws), plant magic beans which grow into an ever-expanding beanstalk, leading to the infamous treasure-filled castle in the sky. .A sequence like that just wouldn.t exist in »

Voiceovers: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek and Zach Galifianakis; Director: Chris Miller; Rating: *** - Fun but not enough.

It is rare in the echelons of cinema that a side character in a famous film gets a part in a full-fledged film. It's rarer still that a side character from the sequel of the original gets a full feature.

The pussy from 'Shrek 2', called Puss in Boots, gets that honour with a full feature dedicated to him and though this is not exactly Shrek territory despite desperate attempt, it is fun nonetheless.

Movie Review - Puss in Boots (2011)

Puss in Boots, 2011.

Directed by Chris Miller.

Featuring the voice talents of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, Amy Sedaris, Constance Marie and Guillermo del Toro.

Synopsis:

The heroic Puss in Boots is pitted against the outlaws Jack and Jill, who have discoved an ancient power that threatens the world.

As I’m sure most of you remember the character Puss in Boots made his first appearance in Shrek 2 (2004) as a secondary character, and for me he was the highlight of a franchise that progressively declined and sullied the name of the instant classic Shrek (2001). So Dreamworks Animation have decided to give him an origin story to give this great permutation of the Puss in Boots character the chance to survive on his own.

I know that what I’m about to say is ultimately going to come off as sounding negative but I want to »

Exclusive: ‘Happy Feet Two’ – Cast and Director Q&A

29 November 2011 2:02 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

We were lucky enough recently to sit down with Elijah Wood, Robin WIlliams, Hank Azaria, Common, and director George Miller to discus the intricacies of making an animated feature, voice acting and all things Happy Feet Two. Check out the transcript of our chat below:

George, can you talk about your collaboration with Savion Glover and the challenges of choreographing so many different sizes and shapes of animated wildlife?

George Miller:  Well, the first thing to know is that I can’t sing and I can’t dance, and so in a way I had no right to be there.  But we had very, very good choreographers and people who really understand music.  Everyone from the composer John Powell to three choreographers—in this case Wade Robson, who did the earlier material; Dein Perry, you might know him from Tap Dogs, who did all the tapping later on; and Kate Warmald, »

Puss In Boots Review

Director: Chris Miller

Cast: Antonia Banderas, Zach Galafianakas, Salma Hayek

Running Time: 90 min

Certificate: PG

Synopsis:  A tale about the events leading up to Puss meeting Shrek and how he got those infamous boots!

We all should remember Puss in Boots from Dreamworks animation studios hit Shrek 2 (2004), shouldn’t we? He was the sword fighting kitty (voiced by Antonio Banderas) with the large hypnotic eyes that convinced even the coldest foes to obey. Not ringing any bells? Maybe that’s because he was kind of overshadowed by that sassy sidekick Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy). But no more! Some studio overlord saw enough potential in this ginger bundle of fur to give him his own spin off.

This prequel to Shrek gives the biographical background of how Puss came upon those infamous boots mixing in some other fun fairytale characters along the way. Who knew that Humpty Dumpty (Zach »

‘Puss in Boots’ – Press Conference Report

25 November 2011 1:06 PM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Yesterday morning we were lucky enough to be in the presence of two of Hollywood’s hottest stars – Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek to talk all things Puss in Boots at a press conference in the famous Claridges Hotel in central London. Also in attendance in was director Chris Miller, but sadly both he and Banderas were lost to Hayek’s uh-mazing clevage which was spilling out of a low-cut dress… Oh and can I thank whomever set up the table at the press conference, poor old Salma had to keep leaning into the mic giving the slavering press one hell of a show!!

The event was streamed live to a quarter of a million children across the UK as part of Filmclub – so the questions were kept light, although the duo’s chemistry, which has enthralled audiences the world over, came through and made this one of the most »

Thn At The Puss In Boots Press Conference

25 November 2011 9:52 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The Hollywood News was lucky enough to attend the Puss In Boots press conference yesterday to see if Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek and Chris Miller would let the cat out of the bag and give us some inside scoop on the long-awaited movie.

The trio didn’t give away too much; an embarrassing childhood nickname from Antonio ‘Dumbo’ Banderas and Chris Miller’s love for Monty Python were pretty much all we could squeeze out of them. One thing we did discover- Hayek is an undercover comedian; making a room full of film critics laugh is no mean feat…who knew?!

Despite a blunder from Hayek,  swearing in a live UK broadcast to thousands of children, it wasn’t a particularly groundbreaking 45 minutes but Thn was just pleased to be in such close proximity of the one and only Zorro and to say we’d been in the French Salon at Claridge’s. »
