The Star Wars Han Solo spinoff has found someone to pull the strings.

Composer John Powell will score the film, Lucasfilm revealed Wednesday.

Powell is largely known for his work on animated movies, including Shrek and Kung Fu Panda. He was nominated for an Oscar for 2010's How to Train Your Dragon. His recent credits include that film's sequels, as well as Jason Bourne and the upcoming Fox animated feature Ferdinand.

Powell will be just the third composer to score a Star Wars live-action film, after series legend John Williams and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Michael Giacchino.

Sean Wilson Jul 6, 2017

Composer John Powell chats to us about scoring Jason Bourne, working with John Woo, his upcoming work and more.

Few contemporary film composers have made an impact quite like John Powell. From animation to drama to his immediately influential, propulsive Bourne soundtracks, Powell's energetic, emotional and heartfelt blend of symphony orchestra, electronics and percussion make him a singular voice.

Ahead of his BAFTA Screen Talks event at the Royal Albert Hall on 10th July, we were delighted to catch up with John to discuss his remarkable career and the secret to a truly great film score.

So 10 years after I saw The Bourne Ultimatum on the big screen and being electrified by your score I'm sat here talking to you, which is a real privilege. I wondered was there a particular film score that inspired you to become a film composer? »

‘Wonder Woman’ Is the Most Successful Live-Action Film Directed By a Woman — and 4 More Records It Will Break

20 June 2017 10:26 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

“Blockbuster” has become the Kleenex of box-office descriptors, a bland adjective used to describe nine-figure films ranging from the obvious (“Star Wars”) to the also-ran (“The Mummy”). And then there’s the rare movie that genuinely deserves all the force and muscle that blockbusting suggests: Right now, it’s Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman.”

As final numbers for the DC Comics movie from Warner Bros. come into clearer view, the “Wonder Woman”performance is better than even the most optimistic pre-opening estimates. It fell just 30 percent for its third weekend, grossing $41 million for a 17-day total of $275 million domestic, $572 million worldwide. (How good is that hold? “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” was considered above average when its third weekend saw a 47 percent drop.)

Expect the final domestic total to end up somewhere between $380 million and $400 million — although another strong weekend might send it above even that. Worldwide, it will rise above $800 million. »

The Jetsons Movie Lands Sausage Party Director

25 May 2017 4:36 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After gestating in development for years as a live-action adaptation, Warner Bros.' animated adaptation of The Jetsons is now moving forward. The studio's Warner Animation Group has brought on Conrad Vernon, who most recently directed Sony's R-rated Sausage Party, to take the reins of this animated movie. The filmmaker has been brought on to develop the project, with an eye towards directing it himself. It isn't clear if he will be working with another writer or if he will write the script himself.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today, with the filmmaker coming aboard keeping this project firmly entrenched within the Warner Animation Group banner. That wasn't always the case, though, with the studio previously trying to put together a Jetsons live-action movie for many years, with directors such as Adam Shankman and Robert Rodriguez attached to the project, with the later working from a script by The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg. »

Newswire: Johnny Depp vetoed a female villain for Pirates 5

23 May 2017 2:31 PM, PDT | | See recent The AV Club news »

We like to imagine Hollywood as a precision machine, with every million-dollar decision motivated by an enlightened blend of business savvy and artistic intent, while auteurs and producers battle it out in the honest assumption that their conflicts will create masterpieces of commercial cinema. The truth, of course, is a little more blurry, as we were reminded this week via a column from prolific screenwriter Terry Rossio.

Rossio—whose credits include Shrek, the 1998 Godzilla, and a host of Disney films, including Aladdin and most of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise—revealed that his version of the script for the upcoming Pirates sequel, Dead Men Tell No Tales, featured a female villain, but the character was nixed by star Johnny Depp. Why didn’t Depp want to face off against a powerful female adversary? Because he’d already done that, a mere five years earlier.

Depp apparently cited his ...

The 5 Highest Grossing Movie Stars Not in a Star Wars or Superhero Movie

Samuel Brace on the five highest-grossing movie stars not in a Star Wars or superhero movie…

Film’s landscape has changed dramatically over the years – as is to be expected. Gone is the age of the traditional American movie, the sweeping drama, the movie star led original tale that could drive audiences to cinemas just to get a glimpse of their face. We have since transitioned into the age of tent-poles; the franchise movie is now the dominant force at the box office, and leading the march are sub genres like the superhero movie, along with mega franchises like Star Wars. And all this got me thinking, just where are all the movie stars? Do they exist anymore? A train of thought that led to a little investigating into just who are the highest grossing movie stars in Us domestic history that haven’t appeared in a superhero or Star Wars movie. »

Mike Myers Hosting ‘Gong Show’ Revival In Heavy Prosthetic Make-Up As Fake British Comedian

28 April 2017 12:10 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Well, it took ’til the very end, but the strangest story of the week has just arrived, and that’s in a week when it was revealed that Will Smith was on the Cannes jury, and that Fyre Festival thing. It’s a while since we’ve seen much of Mike Myers: the Canadian superstar comedian’s two main franchises, “Shrek” and “Austin Powers,” lie dormant, and Myers hasn’t actually appeared on screen since his cameo in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” in 2009, although he did direct 2013’s documentary “Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon.”

But something of a comeback may be on the way: Myers has been talking about a possible fourth “Austin Powers” film this week to mark the film’s 20th anniversary; he’s starring with Margot Robbie and Simon Pegg in crime thriller “Terminal”; and today, Myers sort-of completes a return to the spotlight in the strangest, »

Yeah, Baby! ‘Austin Powers’ Shagged Its Way to Theaters 20 Years Ago

28 April 2017 10:15 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

When “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” opened May 2, 1997, Variety described it as an “odd mix of sophisticated and lowbrow humor” but was enthused about the Mike Myers-Jay Roach collaboration. The film had cost less than $20 million so it was profitable with a modest $67 million worldwide. There was no deal in place for a sequel, but New Line execs noticed the comedy was a huge hit in home video and on cable. When the studio greenlit a sequel, many rival execs were surprised: They were still defining success solely by domestic box office.

Boosted by massive marketing tie-ins, 1999’s “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me” saw a spectacular domestic opening weekend of $55 million and completed its global run with $312 million. “Austin Powers in Goldmember” (2002) scored $296 million worldwide. After many years, rumors persist that a fourth edition is imminent. As Powers himself would say, “Yeah, baby!”

Austin Powers 4 still possible, says Mike Myers

Simon Brew Apr 28, 2017

As Austin Powers reaches 20, Mike Myers admits that he'd love to do another film...

We get very few movies from Mike Myers, who in the 1990s and 2000s sprung to the top of Hollywood off the back of the Wayne’s World, Shrek and particular the Austin Powers films. Even the not very good The Cat In The Hat crossed $100m at the Us box office, helped by Myers’ star power.

Myers has been less active on the big screen in recent times, though. His last live action film project was the 2013 documentary Supermensch, that he directed. But it seems now that he’s considering again a fourth Austin Powers movie, something that’s been rumoured on and off since the last film, Goldmember.

Austin Powers was Myers’ tribute to his late father, though, and in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Myers admits that “I would love to do another, »

Mike Myers Says He Would Love To Do Another 'Austin Powers' Movie

Mike Myers may be ready to slip back into a familiar character.

The 53-year-old comedian reflected on the upcoming 20th anniversary of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, and how his father's death inspired him to create the hilarious British spy character.

Flashback: Working Out with Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Kevin Nealon & Mike Myers in ‘93

"After my dad died in 1991, I was taking stock of his influence on me as a person and his influence on me with comedy in general," Myers said in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, published on Thursday. "So Austin Powers was a tribute to my father, who [introduced me to] James Bond, Peter Sellers, The Beatles, The Goodies, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore."

Austin Powers debuted on May 2, 1997, the sequel, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, hit theaters in 1999, and was followed by 2002's Austin Powers: Gold Member, co-starring Beyonce. All three films were directed by Jay Roach.
