Exclusive: From 'Undressed' to 'StartUp,' a Career Retrospective With Adam Brody
For better or worse, Adam Brody will always be remembered as Seth Cohen from The O.C. The affable and awkward teen is easy to find inside the weathered and wiser 37-year-old Brody, but the San Diego native might never be able to shake his early-aughts pop culture iconography. Despite that infamous role, Brody has had a pretty consistent career over the last two decades, playing opposite Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, being directed by famed playwright Neil Labute and making guest appearances on beloved TV shows like House of Lies and The League. This month, he’s in the buddy comedy Big Bear, where he gets to sport a pretty mean mustache, and returns with the second season of StartUp on Crackle.

With two such diverse roles coming out in the same month and nostalgia for shows like Gilmore Girls and The O.C. at an all-time high, Brody sits down

‘Legion’: Noah Hawley’s ‘Romance of the Mind’ Might Be Hiding a Heart of Darkness
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Legion” Season 1, “Chapter 2.”]

Apocalypse Now

Maybe the wild premiere left me Fubar, but the opening of “Legion’s” second episode gave off major “Apocalypse Now” vibes. David’s ominous, deadened voiceover recalled Martin Sheen’s war-torn work in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic. The song — “Road to Nowhere” by the Talking Heads — served as a modern stand-in for The Doors’ “The End,” which would be far too on-the-nose (and overused) to be repurposed yet again, but the notes guided a slow, seemingly peaceful riverboat ride; an iconic wartime image, countlessly repurposed in many an action film, but never so effectively alluding to the horrors hidden on each riverbed as in the Oscar-winning 1979 film.

And there are horrors lurking in “Legion” — literal and figurative. As sunlight shone through the trees above, men in “black masks, boots, and the one they called, ‘The Eye,

I was just thinking and I thought, ‘That’s what I’d like to do.'”

It may sound a bit like divine intervention, but Martindale had long been thinking about making the jump from stage acting, something she had done since she was just a kid, to the big screen. The Texas native knows the story sounds a little funny, but she delivers it with such conviction that it’s hard to deny. And she

How I Met Your Mother Series Finale Review: “Last Forever” (Season 9, Episodes 23-24)

It’s impossible to go into the finale of any show that you’ve devoted nine years to without some form of expectations. There are certain beats a finale is supposed to hit, but it also can’t fall into cliche territory. There are expectations about where the story should go, what should happen for the characters and how the final scene should run. In the case of How I Met Your Mother‘s finale, I’m not certain if it’s unsatisfying because it’s so far from where I had hoped the characters would end up, or if it really is a bad episode. Honestly, it’s probably a bit of both, but regardless, the result isn’t great.

In case it needs to be said, from here on out, this review is chocked full of spoilers. So if you haven’t seen the episode yet, don’t continue reading.

Top 200 Most Anticipated Films for 2014: #141. Neil Labute’s Dirty Weekend

Dirty Weekend

Director: Neil Labute

Writer: Neil Labute

Producers: Duncan Montgomery, Tiller Russell, Joey Stewart

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available

Cast: Matthew Broderick, Alice Eve, Phil Burke

It seems Labute had a positive experience working with Alice Eve in Some Velvet Morning because here she is again headlining his cast. While Broderick can certainly enhance a film when cast correctly (think Alexander Payne’s Election), we’re curious to see what’s really going on here. Knowing Labute, there’s some trick up his sleeve, hopefully the kind that has a generous payoff. 2013 was something of a return for Labute, with Velvet and the adaptation of his play, Some Girl(s) from Daisy von Scherler Mayer both being worthwhile indie features. We’re happy to see him continuing with his own work rather than the odd remakes.

Gist: Broderick plays a businessman who finds himself delayed in a city where

First Trailer for The Pretty One with Zoe Kazan & Jake Johnson

  • HeyUGuys
Following its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, the long wait is almost over for Jenée Lamarque’s romantic comedy-drama The Pretty One, with the film heading into Us cinemas early next month.

The first trailer has debuted over on Apple, giving a very promising first look at the film, led by Zoe Kazan in a dual role as twin sisters Laurel and Audrey.

The Pretty One is a coming of age comedy about identity and loss and a wallflower who finally learns how to break out of her shell. In a balancing act of a performance, Zoe Kazan portrays a dueling mixture of loss and awakening as twins Laurel and Audrey, most poignantly as a relationship blooms with her new neighbor (Jake Johnson). As Laurel begins to slip into the life she has always wanted but never thought was possible, she must decide between continuing her life

'The Bachelor' premiere: Juan Pablo Galavis has a hesitant first-impression rose recipient

Time for "The Bachelor," you guys! Happy New Year to us, right?

Juan Pablo's opening montage lasts approximately five seconds before he's shirtless, but at least he's not soaping up in the shower like Sean Lowe. Remember that? It was weird.

There's some pretty sexy footage of Jp playing soccer, which he did professionally for seven years. But it all gets cuter when there's footage of him goofing around with his daughter Camila, who is named Camila Valentina because she was born on Valentine's Day. She's so cute you could eat her right up.

Plus, Camila and Juan Pablo's parents are going to live in Los Angeles with him while the first few weeks of the "Bachelor" tape, which is terrific. He keeps calling her "my chiquituri," and are they the most adorable parent/child pair to appear on this show? Very possibly.

Guy Time

Speaking of Sean,

Don’s Favorite Narrative Films of 2013 - Best of 2013

When I first started preparing my year-end lists for 2013, I knew for certain that I was going to continue my trend of creating one post with my favorite theatrically released narrative films of 2013 and a separate post with my favorite documentary films of 2o13. This is because I have a difficult enough time ranking films that share no common elements other than they were all shot on a medium that can capture both moving images and sound. The ranking of anything (especially art) seems completely arbitrary to me and the fact that most year-end lists focus on the "top" or "best" really makes no sense. While I guess there are certain basic mechanisms of filmmaking that can be done well (thus making a "good" movie) or can be done poorly (thus making a "bad" movie), for the most part it is all just personal opinion. I prefer to approach talking

Some Velvet Morning | Review

Women Are From Velvet: Labute’s Latest Chapter in Power Struggles of the Sexes

Its title recalling that late 60’s psychedelic pop song from Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelton, a duet between a man and a mysterious woman that instructs him in the ways of love, Neil Labute returns to what he does best with Some Velvet Morning, a one setting two-hander that feels an awful lot like a filmed stage play. It also happens to be the best output from the provocateur in over a decade, though that’s not to say it’s an overtly appealing film. Rather, it’s a bit tiresome to sit through, a bickering pair of selfish ex-lovers duke it out in a constant struggle to remain in control of a tense reunion in seemingly endless revolution. Until, as seems to be Labute’s custom, a surprising twist is revealed which begs for a

'Toddlers and Tiaras': Now with a chance for animal cruelty!

As if "Toddlers & Tiaras" weren't disturbing enough on its own, now they're bringing helpless pets into the mix. Yes, there's a pet pageant. Pets and little kids -- two groups forced into these strange traditions, mostly against their wills.

The season premiere features three little girls and their three little (and not so little) pets: Rainbow Dash (named after a My Little Pony) with her dog, Titi, Gabby with her guinea pig, Puddinin, and Lily with her miniature horse, Blackjack. Both the children and the pets got captions when they "spoke."

Note: This beauty pageant takes place in Indiana and features a miniature horse. It's a missed opportunity to feature Lil' Sebastian! (If you don't get the reference, please go watch "Parks and Recreation" now.)

If you're not yet scared, here are 10 reasons why you should be:

1. "I don't think I'll be going to hell because of pageants. I could
