Storyline

Among the most recognized and revered television newsmagazines, "20/20" was ABC's answer to CBS's "60 Minutes." Though some stories were humorous, light-hearted and sometimes frivolous features, the meat of "20/20's" programming was investigative reporting many times exposing corporate, medical, educational and governmental wrongdoing, incompetence and criminal negligence and reports on news events of the week from (often) different angles than was seen on the nightly news. Oftentimes, co-host Walters interviewed a prominent celebrity, politician or other newsmaker (among her most famous interviews included her fearless interview of feared Libyan dictator Muhammar Qaddafi; and her inspirational story of Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, who was interviewed shortly after the Persian Gulf War had ended). The show's regular cast of contributors filed the reports, with the most prolific including John Stossel (who once had his nose broken while interviewing a World Wrestling Federation wrestler), ... Trivia

In 1998, ABC News combined 20/20 (1978), with Primetime (1989) to compete with Dateline NBC (1992) which aired four days a week, then. The newest programs were titled "20/20 Monday", "20/20 Wednesday", "20/20 Friday", "20/20 Sunday", and Downtown (1999). (So there would be a program, would televise daily through out the seven day week. In 2000, ABC News returned 20/20 (1978) and Primetime (1989) to their previous hours. ABC kept its newest creation, Downtown (1999), as a spin-off, of 20/20 (1978). See more »

Good news magazine show
20 July 2007 | by (Chantilly, Virginia, USA) – See all my reviews

"20/20," in my opinion, is a good news magazine show. During the time he was on the air, I enjoyed seeing Hugh Downs as the co-anchor. When he retired in 1994, I was really sad. My reasons for this are very hard to explain. If you ask me, it seems that nobody stays with a TV show throughout its entire run anymore. Still, I enjoyed hearing him report about what was happening in the world. I still think about him to this day. The only thing I don't like hearing about was when someone had been murdered or gone missing. Now, in conclusion, I'd like to say that Hugh Downs was a fine reporter who will be sorely missed. There will never be anybody like him.
