Here’s how studios say they see it: Sure, we really want to hire women directors. But there’s almost no studio movie that isn’t big budget, and we can’t find women who have the experience necessary to handle the really big movies. (Never mind Colin Trevorrow. Or Marc Webb. Or Gareth Edwards. Or Jon Watts.)

Of course, that logic is a vicious cycle at best, but here’s a chance to break it. Director Reed Morano’s dazzling execution of the first three episodes of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” suggests another excellent source for future women directors: top cinematographers.

New to Hulu in May: ‘Winter’s Bone,’ ‘Big Fish,’ the Return of ‘Casual’ and Many More Film and TV Titles

Hulu has announced the new titles that will be available to stream on the platform in May. Next month will see the streaming release of Oscar-nominated films such as Debra Granik’s 2010 drama “Winter’s Bone,” starring Jennifer Lawrence, and Tim Burton’s 2003 fantasy drama “Big Fish.”

Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming one-man show “Rodney King,” directed by Academy Award nominee Spike Lee. The show is written and performed by long-time Lee collaborator, stage and film actor Roger Guenveur Smith.

Rodney King” will be available to stream on Netflix April 28, one day before the 25th anniversary of the announcement of the “not guilty” verdict in the King case. The verdict led to the Los Angeles riots, which became the most famous case of police brutality in the Us, and left more than 60 people dead and over 2,000 injured.

Spike Lee’s ‘Rodney King’ Starring Roger Guenveur Smith Acquired by Netflix (Exclusive)

Netflix has bought the rights to “Rodney King,” directed by Spike Lee and performed as a one-man show by Roger Guenveur Smith. The streaming service has scheduled the project to premiere on April 28.

In addition to starring in “Rodney King,” Smith also serves as an executive produces. Steven Adams and Bob L. Johnson are producing for Luna Ray Media and Matthew Helderman, Luke Taylor, and Patrick DePeters are executive producing for Buffalo 8 Productions.

The date for airing “Rodney King” has been chosen to coincide with the upcoming 25th anniversary of the state court acquittals of the four Lapd officers who were videotaped beating King in 1991. The acquittals, which took place in Simi Valley, sparked three days of rioting that left 53 dead.
