Sam Sparro: 'New album is heartbreak disguised as disco'

2 April 2012 9:18 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Sam Sparro has teased details about his forthcoming album. The singer described his new LP Return To Paradise - which is due out later this year - as a "heartbreak" record. Discussing the opus with Attitude Magazine, he said it was "a heartbreak album disguised as a disco album", adding: "Even the happy songs are almost about coaxing myself out of a depression." Sparro also revealed that the set was inspired by gay New York club Paradise Garage, which ran from 1976 to 1987, adding: "The cross-section of music that Larry Levan [the club's main DJ] played and selected was so special to me." He continued: "I (more) »

The Avengers Kick-Ass Japanese Trailer

16 March 2012 12:57 AM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, The Avengers Paramount is celebrating its centenary in 2012. Minor detail: Paramount didn't exist as a distribution entity until the mid-1910s and as a de facto studio (named Paramount) until the late '20s, but never mind. The point is that as part of Paramount's celebration, the Hollywood major is offering audiences bigger and better movies. Well, scratch the "better" half. But bigger, definitely. But how can that be possible? Haven't movies gotten as big as they can get? Well, yes and no. There will come a time, for instance, when mean alien invaders will not only kill millions on screen, but also millions sitting in movie theaters — thus doing their bit for population control. Technology, of course, hasn't reached that high level of sophistication yet; so, since we can't get louder sound effects and bigger visual effects, we get instead a smorgasbord of superheroes in one single movie. »

‘The Three Musketeers’ Drinking Game

12 March 2012 12:52 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

There have literally been dozens of adaptations of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel The Three Musketeers… even more if you count sequels, adaptations of other Dumas books (like The Man in the Iron Mask) and even Peter Hyams’ whackety-schmackety The Musketeer with martial arts fight choreography. Forget Charlie Sheen and the Disney version. This new film features 3D, impossible sci-fi action elements and Orlando Bloom acting as a proper dandy. If that’s not an incentive to drink, I don’t know what is. Being a film about famous Frenchmen, I’d suggest a nice French wine for this movie. Of course, considering it has the flavor of a big, dumb American action film, you’d also do fine with a case of Schlitz. And now, to cover our butts… This game is only for people over the age of 21. Please drink responsibly, and don’t go to Orlando Bloom for fashion advice. Take »

Sam Sparro slams "caveman, misogynistic" male artists

19 February 2012 9:46 PM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Sam Sparro has hit out at other male performers, saying that they are too "misogynistic". The Australian singer, who recently announced new single 'Happiness', said that he exercised to get in shape for the release of his second album Return to Paradise because he believes male artists have to be "macho" rather than "fabulous". Sparro told The Daily Telegraph: "[I] did the whole La thing and got a personal trainer. Men aren't allowed to be fabulous, dandy entertainers; they have to be cavemen - macho misogynist monsters. "And you have women now taking the lead on exploiting their sexuality as a powerful tool. If a gay man does that, it (more) »

Vince Vaughn to Star in Action/Thriller Lucky Strike for Tony Scott?

16 February 2012 5:51 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

There was a time after Swingers when Vince Vaughn tried his hand at a string of dramatic roles in films like Psycho, Return to Paradise, Domestic Disturbance, and The Cell before returning almost exclusively to comedies. Now he may have a chance to stretch his dramatic muscles again, this time for director Tony Scott in the action/thriller Lucky Strike. The film would tell the story of a DEA agent who "teams with a drug runner to take down a drug cartel." There's no word on which part Vaughn would play; only that he would star. Lucky Strike has gained momentum to become Scott's next project, although nothing has been set in stone yet, especially given the director's slew of other potential deals. If the film does become next in line for Scott, a late summer or early fall shoot would be planned. Written by Henry Bean, Lucky Strike has »

Sundance Film Festival Review: 'Wish You Were Here'

20 January 2012 9:29 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Beautifully shot and with a memorable, tough-guy-meets-vulnerable-dad performance from Joel Edgerton, "Wish You Were Here" keeps threatening to become a first-rate mystery tale about secrets, lies and sex.

Its story flits back and forth through time, unspooling a tale about a Cambodian holiday gone bad and the ramifications of an ecstasy-fueled party that leaves one man missing and the lives of his vacation mates in shambles. But there are a few weakly drawn characters and a rushed ending that leaves the timeline-hopping plot strands in an unsatisfying cinematic heap. It all made for an entertaining opening to the 2012 Sundance Film Festival on Thursday (January 19), but one that left us itching for some truly great festival films in the days to come.

Edgerton plays Dave, an Australian boat builder and father of two, who jets off to Southeast Asia with his pregnant wife, Alice (Felicity Price), her sister, Steph (Teresa Palmer) and Steph’s boyfriend, »
