Charlize Theron Captivates in ’93 Martini Commercial

23 September 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Before “Mad Max: Fury Road,” before her Oscar-winning turn in “Monster”—even before “The Cider House Rules,” Charlize Theron was a working actor like any other. Born in South Africa, she modeled in Italy, studied ballet in New York City, and after a knee injury shut down her dancing career, moved to Los Angeles to get into TV and film. It was around that time that Theron appeared as a European bombshell in the martini commercial below, exhibiting a sultry charisma that surely foretold her later success. Read: “How to Nail Every Shot in a Commercial Shoot” With artfully swept blonde hair and a little black dress that ends up stealing the show, Theron captivates even in a simple 60-second spot. The actor’s later roles rarely demanded this level of glamour and magnetic sexiness, but it’s clear—as with all of her subsequent screen performances—she can fit the part. »

Lion review: Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman hunt Oscars in moving adoption drama

11 September 2016 10:41 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The true story of a man using Google Earth to track down his childhood home is often slight but accomplished direction and interesting themes of racial identity keeps it on track

It’s been a rough few years for the Weinstein Company, both critically and commercially with Harvey Weinstein’s intimate relationship with the Oscars turning into more of a casual association. The giddy years that saw vanilla mum films like Chocolat and The Cider House Rules score with Academy voters came to an end and recent attempts to sneak in (with Southpaw, Big Eyes and Mandela) have left the brothers empty-handed.

A live-action movie from a dog’s perspective makes for an interesting premise in the new trailer A Dog’S Purpose from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Dear John, The 100-Foot Journey), and since the family film deals with reincarnation, Shirley MacLaine will be the first one in line.  Based on the trailer, this one will certainly be a tear-jerker.

A Dog’s Purpose Rings In National Dog Day With Refreshing First Trailer

26 August 2016 2:17 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

You’ve heard the saying claiming cats have nine lives, but what about their docile companions? Introducing us to an uplifting story of canine reincarnation, the first trailer for A Dog’s Purpose has scurried online just in time for National Dog Day.

The pic, one lifted from W. Bruce Cameron’s best-seller, hails from director Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules). As the trailer above reveals, Josh Gad lends his vocal chords to the central canine, who experiences life through a variety of wildly different vignettes – and breeds – ranging from a cutesy pup to a trained German Shepherd. The story then becomes about Gad’s interaction with each new owner, a pitch that is about as crowd-pleasing as they come.

Imagine the premise of Todd Solondz’s indie pic Wiener-Dog, only spreading its heartfelt story across multiple eras, beginning with the 1940s. Outside of Gad’s multi-faceted role, »

Music is an integral part of filmmaking, moving the story and touching the audience. Where would iconic movies such as Star Wars, Avatar, The Godfather, or Gone with the Wind be without its music? Would Downton Abbey, Dexter, or House of Cards be the same and have audiences glued to their TVs without music? Would gamers immerse into Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda if they were silent? Movie music has moved us all to cheer, cry, and fall in love for more than 100 years. Yet the vast majority of composers hired to create this vital part of Hollywood’s cultural landscape have been men. Well, that musical glass ceiling is about to crack!

Grand Performances, the “Best Free Outdoor Summer Concert Series” in Los Angeles and the Alliance for Women Film Composers team up celebrate the music of women composers in film, television, video games and interactive media at »

Even A-list stars have #officeproblems.

In an interview with V Magazine, Oscar winner Charlize Theron admitted she had a difficult relationship with Tobey Maguire on the set of their acclaimed 1999 movie "The Cider House Rules."

"Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time, yeah. I mean, we're good now. It was a difficult movie," she told interviewer James Franco. "Every day is completely different for a completely different reason. Whether it's the weather, or the writing isn't there, or you don't get along with your castmate, you have to be able to go to something else that's just as powerful. Does it make it as enjoyable? Probably not. I mean, there were just a couple of days that Tobey and I had a rough time. The rest of the movie, we actually had a really good time."

But Theron learned a lot about acting from that experience. "It teaches you different things. »

Oscar Controversy Is 'Racist to Whites' Says Charlotte Rampling

22 January 2016 12:15 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last week's Oscar nominations were more controversial than ever this year, since, for the second year in a row, no African-American actor or actress was nominated. This lead to stars such as Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and filmmaker Spike Lee to boycott the awards ceremony, with Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo revealing this week that he's mulling the possibility of shunning the ceremony as well. Another Oscar nominee, 45 Years star Charlotte Rampling, had a much different take on this hot-button topic, revealing in an interview with French radio network Europe 1 that the controversy is actually racist to white people.

"It is racist to whites. You never know if it was really the case. But perhaps the black players do not deserve to be in the final stretch. Why classify people? These days everyone is more or less accepted ... People will always say: 'Him, he's less handsome'; 'Him, he's too black' »
