‘Future Man’ Review: Seth Rogen’s Zealously Bawdy Hulu Series Riffs on Sci-Fi Classics for New-ish Adventures
In referential narratives, there’s a point where a nod to popular culture becomes so obvious the writers feel the need to specifically acknowledge it. “Community” consistently did this well, crafting individual episodes around known films or TV shows, like “A Fistful of Paintballs” or “Documentary Filmmaking: Redux,” and naming their episodes after the homages (if not directly announcing them in the narrative). But those were one-off spoofs of form as much as function, featuring stylistic touches that served as a tip of the hat to the filmmakers. They were quickly forgotten as the long-term story moved on to another target the next episode.

The Orville” is perhaps a more accurate comparison for “Future Man,” given both shows are taking a premise made famous decades prior and repurposing it for their own benefit. Seth MacFarlane’s Fox series has failed spectacularly in bluntly copying “Star Trek,” missing both the motivation,

‘Outlander’ Review: Season Premiere Brings Life, Death, and Sour Milk

‘Outlander’ Review: Season Premiere Brings Life, Death, and Sour Milk
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Outlander” Season 3 Episode 1, “The Battle Joined.”]

Unrequited Love

At its heart, Diana Gabaldon’s saga is a tale of romance about how love conquers all: war, continents, and even time travel. Viewers have caught on with their own passionate and often outspoken love for Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall/Fraser. And that makes a third season, marked by the lovers having been separated for nearly two decades, a tricky thing. Rather than picking up where the second season left off — with Claire, her daughter Brianna, and historian Roger tracking down the presumed dead Jamie through the history books — “Outlander” returned to the period just after Jamie and Claire’s separation to dig into some of that lost time. With 20 years to cover, there’s certainly a lot of story to incorporate, but the more writers fall down that rabbit hole the longer they separate the couple people are waiting to see. That makes this season a hard,

Earlier in the day, Disick, 34, was spotted at upscale Greek restaurant Milos with Kim, 36, and family friend Jonathan Cheban.

Before there was a snake emoji-filled feud between Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian, there was admiration — at least from one party.

Posterized August 2017: ‘Detroit,’ ‘Good Time,’ ‘Ingrid Goes West,’ and More

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

August spells the end of summer and start of awards season with a couple “prestige” openings from the likes of Kathryn Bigelow and Destin Daniel Cretton in wide release (from Annapurna Pictures and Lionsgate respectively). It’s nice to see big-ish studios showing independent voices some love in 2017 (although Bigelow is obviously no stranger to Hollywood budgets) alongside bigger sibling Sony’s partnership with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver.

It’s not all highbrow, though. Fans of Annabelle have a prequel to its prequel (Annabelle: Creation hits August

Brendan Fraser: the lost movie star?

Simon Brew Jun 15, 2017

Brendan Fraser seemed on the verge of being a major movie star in the late 1990s. But it never came to be. We look at why…

I remember going in to watch 1994’s Airheads at the cinema, at the time tempted to do so more by the name of Michael Lehmann on the end credits than Adam Sandler and Brendan Fraser above the title. Steve Buscemi’s presence helped too, of course. But Lehmann had, after all, come to the project off the back of the unfairly maligned Hudson Hawk, and also, this is the man who gave the world Heathers. Can’t grumble with that.

I’d not seen Brendan Fraser on the big screen before, although even by this stage, he’d earned some currency. Encino Man – California Man in the UK – had overcome savage reviews to prove a decent hit. School Ties, that I

The Last Jedi’s First Trailer Is a Blast from the Past

Whether praising its return to form or decrying its lack of innovation, one thing that everybody can agree on is that the Disney Star Wars movies are pitch-perfect callbacks to the original trilogy. Stripped down to its core, The Force Awakens was about a child of destiny, a pilot and an Imperial insider teaming up with a cutesy droid to stop a black clad villain’s attempts to use an over-sized superweapon to destroy the galaxy one planet at a time. Even Rogue One told us a familiar side-story surrounding the franchise, with plenty of fan-service sprinkled in for good measure.

‘Brigsby Bear’ Review: The Lonely Island’s Sundance Debut Is a Sweet Movie, But It’s a One-Joke Slog — Sundance 2017
It’s never a good thing when a production studio’s logo is the funniest part of a comedy, but, in fairness, the guys from The Lonely Island came up with a pretty good one. If only the rest of Dave McCary’s “Brigsby Bear,” a characteristically sweet and off-kilter vehicle for “SNL” star Kyle Mooney, were as amusing or subversive as we’ve come to expect from the companies behind it. (Sony Pictures Classics disagrees; it acquired the film today for worldwide rights.)

Mooney plays James, who initially seems like the son that every parent fears they might raise. An emotionally stunted 25-year-old man-child who lives at home and (literally) never goes outside, James sits in his room all day and obsessively re-watches VHS tapes of his favorite educational television series, “Brigsby Bear Adventures,” a new episode of which arrives at his house each week. And the strangest part

Douglas Smith owes Brendan Fraser a thank-you card.

The Toronto-born actor inadvertently landed his first film role, as the young Fraser, in 1999’s Blast From the Past.

“I was 12 years old and I was visiting my older brother Greg, who was shooting Small Soldiers on the Universal backlot, and the casting director thought I looked like Brendan Fraser and had me come in and audition for Blast From the Past,” says Smith on the line from New Mexico, where he’s in the middle of a cross-country road trip. “And a couple of weeks later I was on the set with Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek — and I had no idea who they were — but I
