Good But Not Outstanding.
24 October 2010 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The fifth installment in the long running Land Before Time series, this film is not outstanding (unlike the original), but I still found it to be good. This fifth film is anything but a perfect movie, but there are some good things about it, as it does retain some of the darker elements (which was one of the things that made the first film outstanding), and like the previous films, the animation is surprisingly good, especially when you consider that this film was released straight to video. But while this film is good, it's nowhere near as great as the original, which is one of the greatest animated movies ever made.

This what I thought of the movie as a whole. As a whole, it's not all that bad, but it is definitely inferior to the first movie. I'm not saying that I hated it, I rather enjoyed it, but nevertheless, the original is a masterpiece, while this is just a good movie. One of the biggest weaknesses of this film (and the other sequels too) is that they made everyone of them as a musical, because that is not how the original one was (sure, there was some music in it, but it wasn't a musical), another weakness is that the series was light and soft, in contrast to the dark and edgy aspects of the original.

On the whole, I'll give this film a rating of seven stars out of ten. That means that while this film is definitely far from perfect (as well as being on the same level of greatness as the original), it's still good and has got some good things about it, such as the animation and some of the dark elements. However, I can say that the series shouldn't have gone on as long as it did, they made many sequels to the first one, TOO many in fact, they made 12, I believe. All in all, while the original is far superior, this fifth installment is good, you might like it.

7/10
