By 1985, Chuck Vincent's M.O. of making real movies with hardcore sex in them had been entirely replaced by plot less, shot-on-video garbage. Vincent, already aware of the rapid decrease in the demand for his well made films, had started directing a series of R rated comedies, none of which could compare with the quality and originality of his hardcore work.
Bordello was Vincent's final hardcore feature, shot in 1985. A partial return to his sophisticated comedy styling (the best of which is arguably Misbehavin'), Bordello is a well made, high budgeted farce taking place in a struggling New Orleans brothel. When the owner dies of a heart condition, she leaves her 49% of the company's stock to an ex-employee who must now oversee the not-so-thriving business.
Meanwhile, the owner of the brothel's parent company (yes, it has a parent company) informs the happy hookers to either make more dough or get out!
Bordello is shot with the same artistic sensibility and attention to detail that highlight all of Vincent's productions. The lively cast seems to be enjoying their roles and provide fairly decent acting as well. Vincent proves that even towards at the tale end of his hardcore career (and life, he died in 1991) he was still a very talented man.
Bordello suffers though from the greater than usual amount of sex scenes than in just about every other Vincent production. Still, any self respecting sexploitation film lover or Vincent fan is obliged to check this one out.
