ex-criminal who wants to go straight but society shut the door in his face, and he was thus forced back to the old ways. This problem is not unique for China, but is common everywhere. The film however is unique for China in that it is among the first to courageously face this topic which public is far less enthusiastic to face. It can also be viewed as a wakeup call to criticize those with attitudes of "should not be committing crime from the start", which is extremely common in China. The problem here is that the guy did his time and wanted to go straight, attitude like this would only push him away from normal life and back to the arms of criminals.
