Where is the river?, 7 June 2004
Author: David Elliott from Washington, US

I'm not sure if they name the river in the episode, but the location is intended to be a river in northern California, and not the Colorado River. The show was actually shot on the South Fork of the American River, near Sacramento (northeast of San Francisco). Some of the details of the real river appear in the show. For example, Troublemaker is the real name of the rapid, though it's not nearly as long and harrowing as it seems in the show. Troublemaker is just upstream of the site of the discovery of gold in 1849 that started the well-known California gold rush. There is also a reference to the "Lollipop Tree", which is a lone tree on a hilltop that is used as a landmark for rafters to know when they are about to enter the gorge.
