80s classic highlights all out orgy.
RElKO6 August 2000
Another classic from the 80s like they can't seem to make now. Loads of top pornstars in this movie about a couple engaged to be married. Both the woman and man have their last taste of "freedom", as the guys hang around and the girls wanna throw their engaged friend a shower party. They hire the nasty looking Jamie Gillis as a male stripper, not knowing he turns out to be some kind of sex demon, hypnotising the party guests into an all out orgy. When the guys finally stumble in they wouldn't know any reason not to take part. Careena Collins, Lois Ayres, Taija Rae and Candy Evans are their usual lust inducing selves and Jamie Gillis proves again he is one of the few real actors in the porn industry.

Stacey Donovan

A bunch of girlfriends get together to throw Collins a bachelorette party before she gets married. Features Gillis as a sort of booby prize, sex slave. Also has some weird possession that turns the entire cast into wild sex maniacs.

Before John Stagliano revolutionized the genre with his voyeuristic one man video camera, cinema vertite styled BUTTMAN series, porn was just a mess of stale, barely tolerable cliches. This one proudly displays them all. Corny dialogue, elevator music, even stilted 'characters' and 'story lines'. It's all done to try to make it seem more 'acceptable' and like a 'real' movie than the cheap porno it really is. It would all be forgettable if not for the casting of Stacey Donovan.

Donovan, whose real name is Kelly Howell, was a very memorable and interesting character in the sex set landscape. She truly had the girl next door look and was the epitome of the Southern California blonde. Although she dove into ravenous sex acts she was no mindless sex drone. She had a sense on how to play the camera and create a sort of presence. Her on screen persona was definitively lively, spontaneous, and funny(she would occasionally do different accents in her roles). Yet she was also distinctly detached. Giving you the idea that there was a different side to her that you never saw.

Her background could be material for a E! True Hollywood Story. She was raised in a average middle class suburban environment. She was a track star in high school and a teen fashion model. She poised for Seventeen magazine, Swatch ads, and various catalogs. She was enticed to do porn and, despite many warnings from family, friends, and agents, decided to do it. She spent five years in the industry and was coined everything from highly professional to cold. Then suddenly, without warning, she turned states evidence for the Meese Commission that was investigating adult entertainment at the time.

In all what Donovan did for the industry was more good than bad. Although in recent years porn's 'mainstreaming' has allowed it to obtain more beautiful young models, Donovan was truly the first to break the mold. She proved porn could get a ideal beauty from a relatively normal background, that was well spoken, and didn't have to depend on the recycled tough looking 'runaways', drug addicts, and prostitutes. When they mention porn legends they always bring up Chambers, Lovelace, Seka, Ginger Lynn etc, but none of these women could match Donovan in looks or multifaceted personality.

Of course when she turned states evidence she was blacklisted and ostracized from the porn community. She hasn't done a video or anything publicly since 1988 and lives in almost complete obscurity, which actually only adds to her intriguing enigma.

In all this is a typically bland adult movie that's made more interesting because of Donovan. Same with most of her other videos. She also sometimes would go under the name Tracy Donovan.

Enjoyable Sequel

Baby Face 2 (1986)

*** (out of 4)

A woman is about to be married so obviously her friends decide to throw her a bachelorette party. At first the ladies take in a few sex toys but when a stripper (Jamie Gillis) shows up he introduces his magical powers to them and that's when things start to get really perverted.

Alex de Renzy's BABYFACE was one of the better remembered porno films from the era that was considered the greatest for the genre. I really enjoy that film and it's ultra weird style but I really wasn't sure what to expect out of this sequel that was made much later. You know, BABY FACE 2 isn't nearly as good as the original and in all honesty it's really an in-name-only sequel but at the same time it was very much enjoyable.

The ladies are all quite attractive as you'd expect and there are some famous faces that porno fans will enjoy. Of course the biggest star is Gillis who is always good no matter what he's doing and I honestly thought he was extremely fun here. Once he's introduced into the film we pretty much get some of the strangeness that the director is known for. Up until his appearance this was pretty much a straight porno movie but things certainly change once the magic stars.

The cinematography was quite good here as was the editing and musical choices. That's especially true once the "magic" stars and the film takes off. Is this movie a masterpiece for the genre? Not at all but there's no question that de Renzy does a very good job with the material and makes it much more entertaining than it should have been.
