It’s hard to surprise musical theater fans, who feel like they already know everything about legends of the industry like Stephen Sondheim. But for legit avids who sit down to watch the Dec. 9 premiere of HBO documentary “Six by Sondheim,” one thing about the film’s cornucopia of archival interview footage will likely prove instantly striking: So many talkshows!
The depth and variety of the footage (stretching back to the ’60s) give the impression that guests on vintage TV yakkers sat around having in-depth chats about musical theater all the time — as if it wouldn’t be uncommon these days to catch Andrew Lippa on “The View” and Jeanine Tesori on “Fallon.”
Maybe credit the overlap of Sondheim’s rise to prominence with the flourishing of the television age. But whatever the explanation, the filmmakers discovered they had a wealth of resources to tap as they assembled a look »

You never know what kind of wacky thing you'll witness when you tune in to the delightfully zany "Watch What Happens Live" on Bravo. And Thursday (Dec. 5), we got to watch Whoopi Goldberg teach host Andy Cohen how to roll a joint.
Now, since this is live TV, we were led to believe it was a "tobacco" joint, filled with green "oregano." But still, this was all kinds of awesome.
Before Goldberg showed us all her joint-rolling skills, she addressed the rumors of whether or not she'd ever lit up before a taping of "The View." "It's never happened. Never," Goldberg says. "You'd see it all over my face. It's a good gig so I don't want to blow it. I don't want to take the chance of smoking before and going, 'Hahaha!' the whole time."
Goldberg also took the high road when asked about how often "The View »

Johnny Weir Says Gay Protestors Are “Idiots.” “Referring to the new anti-gay law in Russia, which forbids virtually all public mention of homosexuality as a threat to children, the athlete flippantly characterized it as ‘no anal sex in front of libraries.’”

The list of 15 documentary films that have advanced in the Oscar race has been released, and sadly, Bridegroom is not included. On the plus side, God Loves Uganda has a shot to make it to the final five.

In what will likely be the final year of Barbara Walters' annual tradition, the venerable newswoman previewed a handful of those included among her list of the 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013.
At the top of Monday's (Dec. 2) episode of "The View," Walters revealed that "Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence and Miley Cyrus were among those she'd chosen to honor. Also on her list? "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts and the Robertson family, stars of hit reality series "Duck Dynasty."
TheWrap.com reports that other figures filling out the list include Nsa leaker Edward Snowden, Kimye (Kim Kardashian and Kanye West), Pope Francis, royal baby Prince George and long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad.
Of course, her selection for the number one most fascinating person won't be revealed until the 90-minute special airs on ABC on Dec. 18. Having aired annually since 1993, with the exception of 2000 and 2001, this year's special is notable »
"I miss Elisabeth a lot, I miss Joy a lot," says Goldberg. "But I have to tell you, I'm having a great deal of fun with Jenny McCarthy. It took me a minute. It was kind of startling to have started something with two folks and to become tight with them, especially with Lizzie because she and I got along. We talked about interesting stuff. We didn't always agree, but that's what friends do. ... Then [Jenny] started tickling me. Not tickling-tickling, but ... I just find her really sweet and refreshing."
"It happens. I won't speak for anybody but me. But I have stepped in it many times. »

Daryl Dixon might be the heartthrob on "The Walking Dead," but in real life Norman Reedus seems a bit more subdued about his sex symbol status. The former Prada model came on "The View" to talk about the AMC series and his new art book "The Sun's Coming Up ... Like a Big Bald Head" featuring photos of road kill, but he seemed to get a little uncomfortable when the subject of his muscles came up.
When Sherri Shepherd brought up his flexing with the crossbows, he humbly responds that there's "a lot of makeup on those arms." Before he could continue with his sentence, both Shepherd and Univision personality Karla Martinez grab his arm. He awkwardly shirks away before making light of the situation, but ladies, ask first!
Reedus also opens up to the ladies of "The View" about his injury on set that sent him to the hospital. After joking, »
There’s a wave of consolidation moving through Canada’s media landscape.
On Dec. 6, at the Whistler Film Festival, Variety’s VP-executive editor Steven Gaydos will lead a panel, “The View From the Top — Consolidation in the Media: Is There an Upside?,” that will feature execs from eOne, Cineplex and Bell Media.
Canadian Radio and Television Commission spokeswoman Celine Legault says one plus from consolidation is the scale of vertically integrated companies “facilitates the creation of diverse and high-quality Canadian programming” and helps it find distribution.
Canadian Media Production Assn. prexy Michael Hennessy says, “If you have strong distributors and broadcasters, then there’s more likely going to be a willingness to license and support (original) television and film projects.”
Hennessy says, “Everybody is trying to get to a scale where it’s easier to manage their costs and where they are able to acquire rights across all platforms — particularly new digital rights. »

On "Watch What Happens Live" Tuesday (Nov. 19), former "Today" host Meredith Vieira was subjected to host Andy Cohen's game "Plead the the Fifth," where he asks a guest three pretty squirm-worthy questions and they can only plead the Fifth to one of them.
Vieira was ifrst asked to rank the ladies of "The View" in order from favorite to least favorite and she pleaded the Fifth before Cohen even finished the question.
But then her next question was, "Who was the worst guest in your years on the 'Today Show.'" After much hemming and hawing, Vieira says, "It's a famous person who was having a difficult day, it's a comedian. ... first name Steve."
Who do you suppose she means? We have a guess that it's the above interview with Stephen Colbert. The part where he »
Barbara Walters took advantage of The View's weeklong trip to Disneyland to pay a visit to her ABC colleague Jimmy Kimmel, making her first appearance Monday on his eponymous late-night show. Walters confirmed that she will retire in May but will continue to executive produce The View and do her Most Fascinating People special, she thinks. Photos: 15 Possible 'View' Panelists to Fill the Empty Seats "I want to leave while people say, 'We will miss her.' I don't want them to say (makes a face), 'Is she still on?' I sort of think that May is a

Radar Online hears from a "well-placed production source" that Shepherd is "quietly looking for new opportunities." Reportedly she is "worried about her job" with Walters on her way out.
"While it may just be a precaution, Sherri is worried she'll be out of a job after Barbara leaves," the source says. "Before Barbara leaves, she'll want to make sure the panel is perfect and Sherri is concerned that could mean letting a few people go."
Shepherd joined "The View" in Sept. 2007 after being a guest co-host since 2006. The 46-year-old has neither confirmed nor denied this rumor.
"Sherri wants to stay on television, in either a hosting capacity or a sitcom," Radar's report continues. "She's looking into various roles and putting her feelers out there. »
Barbara Walters has had 10 co-hosts on “The View” since the daytime talk show premiered in 1997, and Jimmy Kimmel tried his hardest on Monday night to get her to admit which one was her “least favorite.” Out of Whoopi Goldberg, Jenny McCarthy, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd, Star Jones, Lisa Ling, Rosie O’Donnell, Debbie Matenopoulos and Meredith Vieira, Kimmel suspected O’Donnell and Jones were in the running. See video: Barbara Walters on Retiring: ‘I’m Not Walking Into the Sunset’ “I can’t even imagine it,” Walters laughed when thinking of a Rosie and Star pairing. “I think that could be a most. »

Barbara Walters was a guest on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Monday (Nov. 18). But Walters is a tough interview -- the woman knows how to not answer a question. Who she hates on "The View" and why she wants to interview Monica Lewinsky? Find out here.
As you can probably tell from the video, one of the things that Walters does not say is who she might dislike on "The View." It's a fair question -- after 17 years on the air, surely there's someone that the show's creator hates, right?
If you believe Walters, she likes all of them. "If we didn't have this kind of chemistry, if we didn't like each other, it wouldn't have lasted," she told Jimmy Kimmel. The best Jimmy could get out of his guest on the matter? That would be a joke: "I don't like any of them!" Walters said with a laugh.

Since The View debuted in August 1997, nearly a dozen women have debated current events, interviewed famous personalities and caused plenty of controversy. With only four people left on the panel—Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy—late-night host Jimmy Kimmel boldly asked the show's creator who she misses the least on Monday, Nov. 18. Speaking to Walters on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the comedian repeatedly asked the Emmy-winning broadcaster to name her least favorite panelist. "I'm trying to avoid it," the said. "That's why I'm talking so much." Kimmel rattled off a list of names and then told Walters, "I've narrowed it down to Rosie »
Based on eagle-eyed Amazing Race sleuths, the upcoming season will include the return of Brenchel, cowboys Jet and Cord as well as those awful twinnees. At least we also get to see Margie and Luke, who still own a soft spot in my heart. There’s also a team returning from this season, so watch out for spoilers.
The cast for Gracepoint — Fox’s remake of Broadchurch — just got more amazing with the addition of Breaking Bad‘s Anna Gunn (in Olivia Colman‘s role) and Jacki Weaver as the mysterious lady in who lives in an Rv (though the character is changing, probably to throw off people who’ve already seen Broadchurch).
Brace yourselves, there’s another conservative Daily Show in the works, except this one would be syndicated. »
