The Paliser Case (1920) -- Lost Silent
28 July 2015 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

A struggling young singer and daughter of an old, crippled Portuguese violinist, Cassy Cara ( Pauline Frederick ), is in love with Keith Lennox ( Alan Roscoe ) , an upstanding young man who happens to be engaged to socialite Margaret Austen ( Hazel Brennon ). Margaret's mother wishes her to wed the wealthy but unscrupulous Monty Paliser ( Warburton Gamble ) and succeeds in breaking her daughter's engagement by reporting that she had witnessed Cassy emerging from Lennox's apartment. However, Paliser admires Cassy, who, to relieve her father's financial distress, agrees to marry the scoundrel. The victim of a mock ceremony, Cassy discovers Paliser's treachery too late and leaves him in a rage, going directly to Lennox with her story. She plans to kill Paliser that night at the opera, while, unknown to her, Lennox has formulated a similar plan to which he alludes at his club. That night, Paliser is stabbed to death, and Lennox arrested for the crime. To shield him, Cassy confesses to the crime, but Lennox denies her statement. Before either can be prosecuted, Cassy's father admits that he stabbed Paliser and then dies of a heart attack, thus clearing both lovers.

This 1920 silent mystery/drama was produced by Goldwyn Pictures, starring Pauline Frederick, Albert Roscoe and James Neil. Tragically it now remains a lost silent film.
