It's not the same as it was from Nickeleon., 9 June 2007

This cartoon is a continuation from the fan favorite Doug from the 90s.
Only difference is it's produced by Disney and not Nick.
Takes place a year after the events in the first series. Where Doug and
his friends enter Junior High. With a load of changes that give
Bluffington a total twist. We see some familiar faces along with Doug,
as well as some new ones. Not to mention the usual lifestyle, problems,
and activities involved in each episode like the in the previous
series.
Designed, and animated by the same company: Jumbo. Voiced by the same
actors except for Billy West who didn't want to be part of it. Same
multi color characters. But it all feels entirely different from the
cartoon I knew from the early 90s.
A lot of other fans don't compare this to being equal to the original.
Which I agree too, as the Disney Doug contains no charm or brilliants
what-so-ever. most of the episodes are good to watch, but like 3/4's of
them are very uninteresting, out of character, misleading, poorly
written, as well as unoriginal.
You might ask why in the word a great cartoon like Doug could receive a
less-worthy sequel. For me it could either be A. There's no Honker
Burger(which was bought out in this series under the name of the cheesy
French restaurant), B. Doug involved in rather stupid situations than
before, C. Adding Dirtbike as the new member of the Funny family rather
pointless, or D. Having the whole series under the name of Disney.
Whatever the real reason is, Disney's Doug fails to be a fan favorite
for most of the other Doug fans. I'm perfectly fine watching the
original countless times as I find that one more appealing than this.
If you hate this second series, then stay away from the movie. See my
review on that one for more detail.

I like the old Doug better!, 14 November 2000

I can't believe those ratfinks Michael Eisner and Roy Disney took the rights to a wonderful cartoon away from Nickelodeon. As another user commented, Roy's uncle Walt probably would throw the remote at the TV if he saw the show. However, Michael and Roy may have different feelings about the show, and we can't do a thing about it.

A step down from the original cartoon, but is still watchable, 28 March 2002

When I first heard that a new "Doug" was going to be aired on T.V., I
knew that I would be in for trouble. What made the situation even
worse, is that Disney is now running things. So much for good old Doug,
I thought. I tried to put off watching this show for as long as could,
but I found the temptation to finally view it in its entirety. To my
surprise, it is definitely not as stupid as I thought it would be.
Sure, some of the voices are different, but I'm not holding that
against it. The setting is different too, now that Doug is in middle
school. They are now going through many of the things teenagers go
through too. It seems that Doug's interest in Patty Mayonnaise has been
amplified x10, Skeeter is acting normal, Roger is no longer the jerk he
used to be, Chalky has become too much of a jock, and Beebe is turning
into a real snob. But of course, they've aged since the show was in its
prime so one could expect some change.
The biggest problem "Brand Spanking New! Doug" suffers from is that
it's just gotten too kiddish. People who liked the original "Doug"
cartoons may be disappointed if they watch this show because it just
may no longer be suited for them.
All in all, I given "Brand Spanking New! Doug" a 2 1/2 out of 5.

I hated this, until today, 22 August 2002

Today I was bored out of my mind. I had too much time to kill and nothing to do. So I flip on my TV and turn on the newer version of "Doug," which is now immortalized on the Disney Channel through re-runs. As a kid, I grew up watching the original Doug and enjoyed every second of it. When it got carried over to ABC (Thus, becoming the version I am reviewing right now) I saw one episode, thought "Boy is this lame" and avoided it like the plague. Well, I was watching it today, and something weird happened: I was laughing uncontrollably. The episode I was watching was the one where Doug and Skeeter stop being friends because Skeeter starts dating Bebe (the snobby rich girl) and Roger Klotz tries to get an impending flood named after him. This episode was absolutely HILARIOUS! I never laughed this much in the entire 12 year history of Doug. An example of this: The school is in an assembly where their principal notifies them of the oncoming flood, and Roger Klotz starts to have a fantasy about all of the destruction, and then it shows his brain fizzling and he says "Stupid brain." It's just dumb little things like that sprinkled throughout. I guess either you had to be there, or I have an odd sense of humor. Regardless, this episode was the funniest thing on TV I've seen in years and I wish I had recorded it. Now, even though I am too old for this stuff, I am going to start watching the re-runs religiously. I think I may have missed an untapped goldmine of laughs.

I Living Proof that you really can like both shows..., 1 November 2004

The lead comment was that this show was a low point for ABC. I didn't
see it that way back in September of 1996. We'd lost cable 8 months
earlier and I was really missing the Nick version of "Doug". I was more
the extatic to find out they were bring the show to a channel I still
got. Then I saw the Trailer, and yes the show's plot, theme song, and
everything else about it get turned upside-down. I maintain however the
basic theme of the show was still the same. Doug still lived in
Bluffington and still wrote in his Journal. That's all I needed to
know.
This show depends a lot on seeing the Nick series but before long
really becomes its own force as we are introduced to life at a Junior
High-School that is under-construction. My favorite episode was the one
where they were trapped in the school by a blizzard, and one of the
kids goes off to find a secret paradise room, hidden in the Principal's
Office. I've yet to find other shows that come close to story lines
like that. The theme of my life for a long, long time. In fact, to this
day, in my ENG classes at TCC I still will write my Narrative Stories
in the "Doug" format of normal life adventures gone wrong. It works!

Disney makes Doug go bad like spoiled milk, 9 October 2001

Brand Spanking New Doug is just plain stupid, and i hate it how disney just got their grubby hands on the great Nicktoon Doug, and mangled it into a lousy, horrible excuse of saturday morning television! I mean let's face it: Some of the things that were there on "Doug" (like the honker burger) cease to be on the old show. Roger's rich, i mean what's up with that? He's trailer trash on the original(and more better) show, but then, he's a snob on the disgrace show! Let's face it: Nick should have renewed it WAY befor Disney took it off their hands. And besides, Nick would have made it better! Well, maybe a little better. But way better than what disney whipped up! But the bottom line is that disney proved with this show that you can sink much lower to the brimey deep with a cartoon like this, and that is a fact jack!

Quality of ABC Saturday morning tv sunk to an all new low, 19 April 2000

I remember a time when ABC had an amazing line up of Saturday morning cartoons, including Reboot and Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic was sadly canned because of low ratings but with Reboot's cancellation was because Disney did not want a program they did not make on the Saturday morning line up. And in their place, what shows do we get? Besides the idiotic and senseless Pepper Ann, we get this load of garbage. Doug was once a NICK toon and in my opinion one of the better NICK toons. That previous show was fine, but this show is just plain horrible. It is brain dead and is a fine example of why Disney original programming is laughed at on a regular basis. The glory days of ABC Saturday morning cartoons ended with the premiere of this Doug cartoon.
The original Nickeldoeon version was much better than this., 9 May 2011

Cartoon King from U.S.A.
I am a huge cartoon fan. I love all sorts of different cartoons. But
some of my all-time favorite cartoons are those by The Walt Disney
Company. From their classic theatrical short-films starring Mickey
Mouse, Donald Duck, Chip n' Dale, Winnie the Pooh, Goofy, and Oswald
the Lucky Rabbit, to their animated feature films like "Pinocchio";
"The Lion King"; "The Little Mermaid"; "Snow White and the Sven
Dwarfs"; "Aladdin"; and "The Jungle Book", or even their animated TV
shows like "DuckTales"; "Marsupilami"; "Darkwing Duck"; "Bonkers";
"Goof Troop"; and "Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers". Disney's animations
are classics, and some of the best and most memorable in history.
Another one of my favorite animation studios is Nickelodeon. Their
animated TV shows like "Hey Arnold!"; "SpongeBob SquarePants"; "The Ren
& Stimpy Show"; "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters"; "Rugrats"; and "The Angry
Beavers" are all highly entertaining, wacky, and hilarious. However one
of their best shows was "Doug". The first Nicktoon which ran from
1991-1994. It was a laid-back, simple, but fun series about an
11-year-old boy who writes things about his life in his journal. It
will always be remembered as one of Nick's best shows of all time. And
even though it was a sad fact that it ended in '94. We still enjoyed it
through reruns. So in 1996 "Doug" was going to be revived by Disney
under the title of "Brand Spankin' NEW Doug!" (wich they later changed
to simply "Disney's Doug") It sounded like good news, but it really
wasn't. We were introduced to it through an episode where they CLOSED
HONKER BURGER! Come on! They can't do that. But... it get's worse.
Billy West no longer voices the 11-year-old Doug Funnie, because even
he hated this update of the classic show. And this new guy (Tom McHugh)
is not very good. He makes Doug sound too nasal, and just not the same.
Also, they break up The Beets, many character designs and personalities
are changed, the humor becomes dull, and unfunny, Doug's day-dream's
aren't near as creative and funny as they used to be, and the whole
show was just destroyed! These episodes aren't near as funny,
memorable, creative, entertaining, or as good as they were on
Nickelodeon. Some people will say I'm being biased and just hating it
because it's different, but I'm not. This show is truly a dull,
unfunny, forgettable, and dumb show. "Disney's Doug" is a bad sequel to
an animated television classic. They changed too much, got rid of too
much, and it just wasn't as good.
Rating: 3/10 "Bad"

Wanted to Like it When it Came out...but Disney Ruined it, 29 July 2009

To this day, I don't see why Disney felt the need to completely gut
everything about Nickelodeon's first Nicktoon. I understand, they feel
that they can do anything better than anyone else...but in this case
they were very wrong.
First, there were so many things that were unnecessary. Why did they
have to break the Beets up? Everyone loved them! Hell, I still have
some of their songs on my iPhone! Second, why did they close the Honker
Burger? Those two things just showed that the new writers felt
intimidated and were so desperate to do the show better rather than
even just trying to do it justice. It failed on both accounts.
The story lines were 30 minutes, which I did like (I would have liked
longer than 10 minute episodes in the original series). However, they
became increasingly bizarre and unrealistic with each passing episode.
One of the charming things about the original series was that, aside
from some cartoon slapstick comedy, Doug was not at all unrealistic.
Disney decided to put the show on acid and leave the viewers scratching
their heads at the end of each episode, asking, "What was that all
about?" This version of Doug jumped the shark the moment it began. It
could have just stuck to the original format with some chronological
updates and allowed the show to evolve a bit, but instead Disney ripped
it up by the roots to begin with, leaving a show that was only slightly
connected with the original series.

A Good Sequel, 3 August 2004
Author:
Ginger87 from New York City
When I first heard about a new series of "Doug" I was thrilled since I
loved "Old Doug". After I saw the first episode I thought it was really
good. It wasn't as good as the NICK series but it was still pretty
good. I liked the 12 1/2 year old Doug (he got cuter) and Doug being in
middle school. I didn't have a problem with this new series tho many
people said it wasn't very good and that Disney destroyed it. I liked
the fact that Doug got older and more mature since I and many other
viewers also got older and more mature.
My favorite "New Doug" episodes are "Doug's Dream House" and "Doug on
the Road". They're both really funny and entertaining.
I wish this series wasn't canceled since I really loved it. But maybe
one day they will make a new "Doug" series about him in High School. I
give "New Doug" 10/10 stars.
