Ka-Blam-Tasitc!
30 April 2004 | by (Buffalo, NY) – See all my reviews

KaBLaM! was what is known as the first anthology Nicktoon. It featured a weekly set of regular cartoons hosted by "comic book" characters (Henry & June). It explored the different mediums of animation. This anthology formula was crucial at the time for increasing demands of Nickelodeon to pump out more new Nicktoons each year.

The original regulars were Sniz & Fondue (which utilized traditional animation), Action League Now! (chuckamation), Life with Loopy (puppet/stop-motion animation), and Prometheus & Bob (claymation). Later on, the show added The OffBeats, (traditional animation), and several other shows.

This show was good for the most part. The Henry & June hotsing segments were cool. The later regulars (Jet Cat, Patch Head, and Racer Rabbit) and most of the miscellanys were quite boring. The best of the KaBLaM! cartoons were Sniz & Fondue and Prometheus & Bob.

By 2000, Nick phased out of KaBLaM!, as more time was devoted to another anthology series, Oh Yeah! Cartoons. That show turned out to be more successful for Nick's anthology formula, which gave birth to several spin-offs (The Fairly OddParents, ChalkZone, and My Life as a Teenage Robot). The only real KaBLaM! spin-off made was with Action League Now!, but it was actually better off as a segmented cartoon than an independent series.

But KaBLaM! was still pretty good in its own right. Nowadays, repeats can be seen constantly on Nicktoons TV (via digital cable).
