Very nice adventure film for kids

Frog and Wombat is a rather light-hearted, but not saccharine, movie about two close friends who are divided by one simple thing: a possible murder. Allison and Jane are two girls who frequently talk to each other over a walkie talkie, using "Frog" and "Wombat" as their handles, and consider themselves the "neighborhood watch". But when Allison believes she has just witnessed the cover-up for a murder, Jane has a hard time believing her. Allison then must decide how to handle this new situation.

Without giving away any spoilers, let me tell that there are many surprises in this film, and it moves along at a rather brisk pace. As an 18 year old, I never felt bored by the proceedings, but rather, I eagerly awaited whatever happened next.

The dialog is very believable, there were very few instances in which one of the kids talked in a way I felt was unrealistic. The acting was also very good, once again, very believable. The characters all acted like real kids, real adults, etc. This may not seem like a major achievement, but very few children's films accomplish this seemingly simple feat.

Frog and Wombat has many moments in which the characters are just lazing about and having fun, that compliment the main story of the murder mystery. These moments help the viewers get to know the characters and get to like them better, which is important, because one has to be familiar with the characters before one will likely care what happens to them. This, in turn, causes all the "little things" to matter, and make suspenseful moments more suspenseful. These "leisure" moments were very well done, and help to balance the action.

To sum it up, I have to say that Frog and Wombat is a very well designed kid's movie, with great acting played by virtual unknowns, great story-telling, and great fun. More kids' movies should be like this!
