Weekend Rock Question: What's the Best TV Show of the 1990s?

23 January 2015 11:18 AM, PST | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

All 236 episodes of Friends landed on Netflix this month. Watching them all in a row would take 86 and a half hours, and somewhere out there is probably a bleary-eyed soul who already plowed through it all. That's a lot of Rachel and Ross drama to absorb in a short time.

Now we have a question for you: What is the single best television show of the 1990s? Feel free to vote for an animated show like South Park or The Simpsons, a sitcom like Seinfeld or Friends, a drama like »

Infographic Shows The Many Voices of The Simpsons Actors

22 January 2015 9:30 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

This is by no means a complete list, but Jishai Evers recently tweeted an infographic that lists several of the voice actors for The Simpsons and breaks down a number of their popular characters. For those of you who practice impressions, create comedic characters, and maybe have aspirations of doing voice work in Hollywood one day, here's something to inspire you. Create as many characters with distinct voices as you can — maybe one day you'll end up on an infographic like this one.

You can find more infographics (including one featuring the voice actors of South Park) here.

Happy Wheels Demo

22 January 2015 12:19 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Happy Wheels Demo is a great introduction to the brilliant physics-based game that is Happy Wheels. The game involves trying to make it through a level without meeting a nasty end. In this demo you can only control a few characters one in a wheelchair, one on a Segway and a guy on a bike with a child passenger. Be warned the game is not politically correct or for kids…think South Park. However, Happy Wheels will put a smile on your face as the death animations are too funny and the situations are just weird. You can see in the thumbnail […] »

'The Elder Scrolls Online' gets a console release date, drops subscription fees

21 January 2015 11:27 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Despite its promise, The Elder Scrolls Online hasn't had the best time of it since it launched last April. Almost immediately, players complained of bots and duping bugs that severely hampered gameplay and compromised the in-game economy, sending the game's developers scrambling to respond. Meanwhile, the game's Xbox One and PS4 versions were delayed eight months, and the game's development studio suffered an unspecified number of layoffs last fall. But perhaps the biggest problem facing The Elder Scrolls: Online was its subscription model. Now that we're long past the heady days of World of Warcraft's peak and Free-to-Play games have »

Comic Book Review – Star Wars #1

Luke Owen reviews Star Wars #1 from Marvel…

Luke Skywalker and the ragtag band of rebels fighting against the Galactic Empire are fresh off their biggest victory yet—the destruction of the massive battle station known as the Death Star. But the Empire’s not toppled yet! Join Luke along with Princess Leia, smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca, droids C-3Po and R2-D2 and the rest of the Rebel Alliance as they strike out for freedom against the evil forces of Darth Vader and his master, the Emperor.

Jason Aaron had a tough job on his hands with Star Wars #1. Since Disney purchased Lucasfilm for a whopping $4 billion dollars, it seemed only a matter of time before the adventures in a galaxy far, far away would return to Marvel Comics, also owned by the House of Mouse. And with out first movie in a decade still eleven months away, Jason Aaron »

10 Best Video Game RPGs Of 2014

14 January 2015 7:50 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

BioWare

Coming into 2014, it was obvious it was going to be a very good year for fans of the RPG, thanks to a busy slate. Big franchises like Diablo and Dragon Age were making returns, but there were also some new kids on the block to meet in the form of Divinity: Original Sin. Any fears of the genre potentially fading away were quickly dismissed, as it showcased an incredible variety of games that proved the diversity of the genre.

Original Sin proved that there’s still some life left in the old girl, combining old-school atmosphere with some new-school technology, meanwhile, veterans like Dragon Age and Diablo came out swinging with some absolutely stellar releases that continued to set the standard for the genre. And not only that, it was also the year of some off-kilter RPG’s that no one was expecting too, as games like South Park »

Interview: 'Man Seeking Woman' creator Simon Rich on Japanese penis monsters and Jay Baruchel

13 January 2015 11:05 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Toronto, Canada. Fxx's new series "Man Seeking Woman" is a 2015 romantic-comedy with a very specific voice.  Not to spoil too much, but it's the story of Josh Greenberg (Jay Baruchel), a young Chicagoan who faces single life after he breaks up with long-time girlfriend Maggie (Maya Erskine) and discovers that returning to the dating pool is absurd, surreal, whimsical and occasionally sad.  The main voice behind "Man Seeking Woman" comes very clearly from Simon Rich, whose listed age is 30.  The son of prolific writer Frank Rich, Simon Rich has the resume of a much, much older man. He was a staff writer on "Saturday Night Live" for four years, one of the youngest ever. He's been a regular contributor to the New Yorker, a staff writer at Pixar and the author of the novels "Elliot Allagash" and "What in God's Name," plus four collections of short stories including "The Last »

Open Source #13: Hello, 2015!

6 January 2015 4:19 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Happy New Year from Open Source! It may have been a rather slow holiday in Gaming News Land, but that doesn’t mean there’s not lots to talk about. Could Sony and Microsoft have done anything to prevent LizardSquad from ruining the Christmas of entitled children everywhere? What does this mean for future online services? And why were Nintendo spared the hack-attack?

Rounding off this episode is a double bill of financial news – the rise of the mighty Steam sale and Notch’s super fancy new pad in La (wait until you hear the price of the toilets!). Is Alien: Isolation worth your time? Does Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare improve on previous titles? Is Dragon Age: Inquisition Too big? And is South Park: The Stick of Truth the funniest game out there? Tune in and find out!

As always, please send in any questions, comments or suggestions to opensource@soundonsight. »

Best of the Year Pt. 1: Double the Swedes & Triple the Tilda

3 January 2015 7:00 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

With love for last year's cinema.

2015 has a lot to live up to. This past year delivered amazing films from fresh-voiced directors, a good number of them female for a change, and it also came through, unexpectedly, with a surprising spread of high quality empathetic and diverse Lgbt cinema. But even if you're stuck in multiplex-only towns, the mainstream also delivered with sneaky overachieving surprises in genres as oft-lazy as superheroes, horror, animation, giant monsters, and crime thrillers. When it came time to draw up my lists I had 30 pictures I really wanted to celebrate. Thirty!

So let's briefly sum up (alphabetically) the films that just missed the top 20

The Boxtrolls - Laika's boldly grotesque superbly-voiced Victorian fable.

Godzilla - Smartly reimagined not as reboot but myth returned. The paratroopers. Gah!

Edge of Tomorrow - Emily Blunt's 'full metal bitch' isn't easy to forget. Neither is the film's gleeful »

Espn No. 1 in Cable Ratings for 2014

2 January 2015 3:17 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Espn was last year’s top dog in cable ratings, sweeping the key demo categories while also winning in total viewers — leap-frogging the likes of USA and Disney Channel, which traditionally battle for the top spot but slumped in 2014.

The sports network, whose telecast of the college football championship game last January was the year’s most-watched cable telecast (25.75 million viewers), edged ahead of TBS in adults 18-49 and 25-54 and bested Adult Swim in the 18-34 demo, according to Nielsen estimates. Espn was one of seven top-40 networks to deliver year-over-year primetime gains in adults 18-49.

Other top-40 nets on the rise vs. 2013 in the demo were VH1 (up 6%), ID (up 9%), Fxx (up 73%), We tv (up 13%), Hallmark (up 8%) and Own (up 7%). The Oprah Winfrey network, with a full year of scripted hit “The Haves and the Have Nots,” grew by double-digits for a third straight year — the only top-40 network to do so. »
