Jimmy Iovine Talks HBO Dr. Dre Documentary, Apple Music and Getting Fired by Foghat

14 January 2017 12:34 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

After 40-plus years in the music business, a man’s gonna have some stories. Veteran music mogul Jimmy Iovine, now head of Apple Music, charmed the Television Critics Association press tour crowd on Saturday with tales of his time in the trenches with everyone from Dr. Dre to John Lennon to U2.

Iovine’s partnership with Dre is the subject of the HBO documentary “The Defiant Ones,” directed by Allen Hughes and set to premiere in the spring. Iovine recalled his first meeting with Dre, not long after Iovine had launched his Interscope Records banner in 1989. What impressed him most was the quality of the sound Dre managed to capture on his landmark Death Row Records recording “The Chronic.”

The low frequencies emanating from the subwoofers that help define the hip-hop had been a huge challenge to capture as a recording. But to Iovine, “Chronic” sounded like “Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ or ‘Sgt. Pepper »

Jimmy Iovine Addresses Apple Music Expansion Reports

14 January 2017 10:58 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

Days after The Wall Street Journal's report that Apple plans to expand into original TV series and movies, Apple executive Jimmy Iovine hinted at what that might look like.

"At Apple Music, what we're trying to create is an entire cultural, pop cultural experience, and that happens to include audio and video," he told reporters Saturday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour.

"If South Park walks into my office, I am not going to say you're not musicians, you know?" Iovine continued when pressed about the report. "We're going to do whatever hits popular culture smack on »

Joseph Fiennes plays Michael Jackson in bizarre first trailer for Urban Myths

11 January 2017 1:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Sky Arts has just released the first trailer for their upcoming satirical eight-part miniseries Urban Myths, which sees a group of hugely talented actors playing some of the most recognizable historical figures/celebrities of contemporary history (in some cases even a little bit before that period). Check out the bizarre and occasionally off-putting trailer below…

If the name of the series rings a bell, it may be because of a certain controversy the show was met with last year when it was announced that Joseph Fiennes, a white man, was cast as Michael Jackson, a black man who had a rare skin disease that affected the pigment of his skin. Many claimed that Fiennes’ casting was yet another example of whitewashing.

Entitled Elizabeth, Michael & Marlon, the episode follows Fiennes’ Jackson, Stockard Channing’s Elizabeth Taylor and Brian Cox’s Marlon Brando as they go on a road trip after 9/11; some »

Will Kenny Omega debut for WWE at Royal Rumble? Rusev ‘shoots’ on Chris Jericho Us title win

10 January 2017 12:25 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

I’ve already hit a wall with my New Year’s get fit resolution. I need a new workout playlist, because I just don’t get amped up enough by WWF: The Music Vol. 5 anymore. There’s only so many times you can deadlift to The Rock’s Pie song in a year. And that’s one time.

Thankfully The Nature Boy Ric Flair is here to help, by sharing his Spotify workout playlist on Twitter…which he seems to have compiled by searching the music streaming service for his own name.

Flair kind of teased a Royal Rumble cameo last week by tweeting a video of him working out with the #17. But he’s not yet one of the 10 officially announced participants in this year’s contest, who after last night’s Raw are: Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman, Chris Jericho, Big E, Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, Baron Corbin, »

Hulu Content Chief Talks ‘Golden Girls,’ Curation Challenges and Live TV

7 January 2017 10:40 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Hulu’s content chief came to the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday to talk up a 2017 slate featuring ambitious originals including “The Handmaid’s Tale,” season two of “The Path” and the 9/11-themed “The Looming Tower.”

But Craig Erwich had another big score to announce to the crowd in Pasadena, Calif., namely that Hulu has nabbed exclusive streaming rights to all 177 episodes of “The Golden Girls.”

The emphasis on new and old during his brief presentation reflects the juggling act of programming a streaming service that has to have something for everyone in order to retain its paid subscribers. Moreover, the Hulu team is also readying for the service’s evolution to a provider of a cable-like package of TV channels — an iteration that promises to help them even better understand what subscribers are looking for on the programming menu at any given time.

‘Simpsons’ Airing Hip-Hop Episode With Taraji P. Henson and Keegan-Michael Key — Watch Trailer

3 January 2017 7:55 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Over the past 28 seasons, “The Simpsons” have done just about everything — run through every original story line, told every joke, predicted every future event, etc. In fact, there’s and a “South Park” episode and a meme about this very idea. In short, it’s hard to cross new barriers for such a long-running series. But in a couple weeks, “The Simpsons” will finally achieve another “first” in their history: they will air a one-hour episode entitled “The Great Phatsby.”

In the episode, the evil, rich Mr. Burns tries to relive his glory days and crosses paths with a mysterious music mogul, but after being conned by him and reduced to bankruptcy, he seeks revenge on the producer with the help of Homer, Bart, washed-up rapper/high-end candle salesman Jazzy James (guest voice Keegan-Michael Key) and the mogul’s ex-wife Praline (guest voice Taraji P. Henson). The episode will also »

Top 20 New Year TV episodes

1 January 2017 11:49 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Wesley Mead Jan 2, 2017

As the New Year arrives, we salute a few favourite TV episodes depicting this momentous time of year...

New Year is a time for reflection on the past and resolution for the future, an opportunity to consider what you’ve achieved and what you’re yet to work on. It’s also a time to stay up well past midnight, partying the night away with friends and family, potentially embarrassing yourself in the process. That dichotomy ensures that the New Year is fertile ground for television, and the finest comedies and dramatic series use the moment to allow for contemplation amidst the alcoholic excesses. Here are twenty New Year episodes that offer an entertaining take on the aeons-old celebration - from emotional character pieces to geeky genre takes and old-fashioned barrages of seasonal comedy.

1 January 2017 11:05 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Here at Et, we love an anniversary -- whether it’s the 20th anniversary of Scream or Clueless, 10 years in the life of The Hills or the magical time making No Doubt’s Magic Kingdom 20 years later. And as we settle in 2017, it’s time to look ahead at all those upcoming moments that will have you saying, “I remember when…”

Here’s a brief look at our favorite TV and film milestones of 2017:

Jan. 25, 2002: A Walk to Remember (15 Years)

While fans are crying over Mandy Moore’s Golden Globe-nominated performance on NBC’s hit new series This Is Us, it was just 15 years ago that they cried over her performance in the weepy adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ book about a girl with cancer who falls in love with a rebellious classmate.

Let’s not also forget that 2002 gave us Naomie Harris in 28 Days Later, Barbershop, Ryan Gosling in Murder by Numbers, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, [link »
