George Barnes and Chris Wiggins

"The Ethan Allen Story" centers on the real life Ethan Allen (George Barnes, second of four), who became a hero during the Revolutionary War, but in earlier years founded the Green Mountain Boys, here depicted as a kind of band of roaming Merry Men, Allen as Robin Hood. The object of their scorn is the corrupt Sheriff Peterson (Chris Wiggins, second of six) and his chief tax collector Bulmer (Stan Francis, last of three), lining their own pockets with the money they collect, citizens like Ficket (Les Rubie, second of three) unwilling to speak out for fear of being jailed. Hawkeye tries to convince Ethan Allen to give himself up, only for Big Jake (John Ringham, first of two) to accuse Hawkeye of treachery after Allen is caught and set to hang without a trial. Lon Chaney gets several choice lines throughout, but even his question about the meaning of taxes gets no satisfactory answer from his white brother. John Ringham's lengthy career began here in Canada, spending the rest of his life in his native England, becoming a fixture on shows like THE AVENGERS.

Ethan Allen or Robin Hood

The Green Mountain Boy and Ethan Allen are fed up with the tax collectors and act like Robin Hood and his Merry Men. When things get out of hand it is up to Hawkeye and Chingachgook to sort things and set everything right again.

A Simple Tale
OneView26 September 2020
Hawkeye was an example of the earlier style of western, avoiding complexity in order to tell a simple tale of opposing groups dealing with illicit tax collection and use of the funds.

This framework presents some context for a good battle scene that shows off the complexities of fighting with single shot muskets. The time taken to load, shoot and re-load the weapons dictates the nature of the fight scene and how mean could quickly progress across territory if they knew their enemies had used up their single shots and settle the battle with cold steel rather than musket balls.

John Hart is a one-note lead but not without charm and Lon Chaney Jnr, not exactly a First Nations American, demonstrates considerable warmth as the Last Mohican and his strong friendship is worth comparison with that of the Lone Ranger and Tonto.

A well made episode and a diverting 25 minutes.

The Ethan Allen Story
Prismark107 June 2020
Hawkeye ends up saving a tax collector left to hang by the Green Mountain Boys.

Hawkeye wants to persuade Ethan Allen not to take the law into his own hands.

Ethan Allen who leads the Green Mountain Boys, has issues with Bulmer the tax collector and Sheriff Peterson. Both line their own pockets with the money they collect.

There are several action set pieces in this simple but decent Robin Hood type story. It even has Hawkeye displaying his shooting skills to prove his marksmanship.

Also Hawkeye and Ethan Allen team up after Hawkeye has saved him from the noose.

The actor John Ringham who plays Big Jake looks nothing like the British actor of the same name who appeared in Just Good Friends.
