A few months ago, the first images from Argo of Ben Affleck in a thick beard appeared on the Web. Now, we get the first trailer for the dramatic thriller that co-stars Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kyle Chandler and a bunch of other faces you'll almost immediately recognize. The film is also the third film directed by Affleck following 2010's critically lauded The Town. The film centers on a CIA specialist (Affleck) who concocts a risky plan to free six Americans who have found shelter at the home of the Canadian ambassador as the Iranian revolution is reaching a boiling point. The thing is, this Argo has a very Wag the Dog feel to it. Granted the reasons for making the fake movie are different, but you can't help but draw that conclusion. Argo doesn't arrive in...

Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games The Hunger Games has topped the Us/Canada box office for the fourth weekend in a row. Starring Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone), the Gary Ross-directed blockbuster scored $21.5 million according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The dystopic action-drama was down a relatively modest 35% compared to Easter weekend. Prior to The Hunger Games, the most recent movie to achieve the four-weekend-in-a-row feat was James Cameron / Sam Worthington's Avatar in early 2010. In fact, Avatar remained at the top for seven consecutive weekends. The Hunger Games, however, won't get that far. Next weekend, it'll surely be unseated by Zac Efron / Taylor Schilling's The Lucky One. Among the nearly 30 movies that have managed to be no. 1 for four weekends in a row are Christopher Nolan / Christian Bale / Heath Ledger's The Dark Knight (2008), Peter Jackson / Elijah Wood »

As expected, The Hunger Games easily topped the North American box office for the third weekend in a row. Gary Ross' dystopic adventure tale collected $33.5 million according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That represents a 43% drop from last weekend, whereas early estimates published on Friday — Deadline had the film earning $40 million over the weekend — implied a drop-off rate of only 30-35%. [Image: Alexander Ludwig as Cato.] For comparison's sake: although both The Hunger Games and Catherine Hardwicke / Robert Pattinson / Kristen Stewart's original Twilight dropped 62% on their second weekend out, The Hunger Games had a softer drop-off rate on its third weekend, as Twilight was down 50.5%. I should note that good business on Good Friday, when many schools and businesses were closed, helped The Hunger Games quite a bit. The film was down only 31% compared to the previous Friday, whereas it was down an estimated 47% on Saturday compared to the previous week, »

Kate Winslet as Rose, Titanic 3D The Hunger Games will easily top the North American box for the third weekend in a row. Gary Ross' dystopic adventure tale collected $12.9 million on Friday, April 6, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The film will likely earn somewhere between $35-$40 million over the Easter weekend. If so, it will be down around 30-35% compared to a week ago — or about half its 62% drop-off rate last (non-holiday) weekend. The Hunger Games should cross the $300 million mark at the domestic box office on Sunday. Its current total is $282.23 million. Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion landed at no. 2 on Friday. At 3,192 locations, the R-rated comedy took in $9.2 million — including $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings. Its weekend total could reach $25 million. If those estimates are correct, Universal will claim that American Reunion far surpassed the $18.7 million earned by the original »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar winner Barry Levinson – who directed The Natural, Wag the Dog, Rain Man and about a dozen other notable flicks – is on board to helm a Hank Aaron biopic which focuses on the baseball icon’s quest to beat Babe Ruth’s career home run record. Writer Adam Mazer (You Don’t Know Jack) is also on deck. The project is born from the Howard Bryant book “The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron,” and Aaron will reportedly be on hand to aid in the production. The Hall-of-Famer is one of the greatest ball players of all time. He got his start in the Negro American League and ended up playing 23 seasons in the major leagues, but the movie will most directly focus on 1972 – 1974 when Aaron was chasing the Sultan of Swat amidst death threats and an overwhelming amount of people who didn’t want to see a black man beat »

Lenny Kravitz, Woody Harrelson, Josh Hutcherson, The Hunger Games The Hunger Games: Far Ahead of Catherine Hardwicke / Robert Pattinson / Kristen Stewart's Twilight The Hunger Games reportedly cost between $78-80+ million, in addition to $45 million in distribution / marketing expenses. The film's production budget sounds credible, but the reported marketing costs feel suspiciously low. An article in the Los Angeles Times stating that "according to a person familiar with the picture’s economics" The Hunger Games needed $100 million to break even seems absurdly off the mark — unless Lionsgate managed to get for itself a one-of-a-kind deal with exhibitors. On average, studios get 50-55% of a film's gross, though usually they take a bigger cut from the opening weekend receipts. Even so, The Hunger Games would have to earn at least $120 million to break even — if Lionsgate were to get itself 66% of the film's opening weekend take. And that doesn't include marketing / distribution expenses. »

News of the film adaptation of Neil Labute’s play, “Some Girls,” has been slim the past few months, with Kristen Bell coming on board a couple of days ago, and Adam Brody joining back in January, but recently a slew of impressive additions have emerged for the Jennifer Getzinger-directed film.
The plot follows Brody’s character, who on the eve of his wedding searches out his ex-girlfriends, all of whom are none too pleased for the surprise. According to THR, Emily Watson, the latest and final casting decision, plays one of the exes, Lindsay, while Zoe Kazan, Jennifer Morrison, and Mia Maestro play the other women. Labute is producing the film with Leeden Media in addition to supplying the adapted script, so the final product is sure to retain his signature dialogue and witty characters.

Director: Oren Moveman
Cast: Woody Harrelson, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Buscemi, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Ben Foster
Running Time: 108 mins
Certification:15
Synopsis: Tough Cop Dave Brown is not your friendly neighbourhood bobby; he’s a world-weary ‘fascist’ who becomes embroiled in scandal after being caught on camera brutalising a criminal. Rampart follows Dave as his life unravels amidst the chaos of his controversies, his dubious brand of law enforcement and a complicated home life.
Woody Harrelson is one of Thn’s favourite actors; a man whose body of work and acting prowess is frequently downplayed or merely overlooked. Sure we all know the parts he’s played in Cheers, Natural Born Killers and more recently the brilliant Zombieland – but what about his show-stealing performances in the likes of Wag The Dog, The People Versus Larry Flint and Defendor? Seriously, the man is amazing and his performance in Rampart is another tick on long list of successes. »

I know some folks have been complaining about how slow the main plots have been unfolding in the first season Luck. I could use the argument that we’re only three episodes in but the fact that the entire season consists of only nine episodes — which means we’re one-third deep into this fascinating look at a California race track — will get a couple of viewers here and there a little bit antsy as to what we’re watching all means.
To them, I say — to use a term Teddy Roosevelt was fond of — “bully”. And I use that term because it is what I think creator David Milch would use when trying not to curse. (It does seem kind of manly, in 1910′s terms.) What Luck is giving us a sprawling look at the winners and loser we may or may not take for granted everyday. Like the thesis that I presented last week, »

Stars: they're just us! Even they think the Oscars are boring.
In a new interview with Maxim, two-time Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman says what you've been thinking for years.
"It's boring!" he said, when asked about attending the ceremony. "It lasts forever, and don't think you're seeing spontaneous behavior. You see couples who are suddenly smooching, and, well, there's a guy sitting on the ground with the camera at their knees."
Hoffman claims he once wanted to play with that lack of spontaneity, but was persuaded to play nice.
"There was one particular time I knew I wasn't going to win, and when they'd train the camera on me as one of the losers, I wanted to be able to rip open my tuxedo shirt and just have stenciled on my chest, oh, shit," he said. "But my wife wouldn't let me do it."

This laborious drama based on a TV event from 1988 expects us all to get behind the sugary good-news story of three rescued whales
The title sounds like a two-word pitch for the film in pidgin English. It is a laborious, sentimental drama featuring a self-parodic performance from Drew Barrymore, based on a TV news event that briefly gripped the Us in 1988. Three gray whales were trapped by the ice in Barrow, Alaska; some homely, folksy people out there identified the crisis; some homely, folksy people elsewhere wanted to get involved; the White House press team belatedly saw the point and the military forces of the Us and Soviet Union wound up pulling together in a glasnost-style mission to free these noble, vulnerable beasts. The movie plays like some uncynical, credulous version of Wag the Dog, in which we are all expected to get behind the sugary good-news story and endorse »
