For Todd Haynes’ “Wonderstruck,” composer Carter Burwell created his loveliest and most ambitious score, entering the interior worlds of two deaf children, Rose (Millicent Simmonds) and Ben (Oakes Fegley), who flee to New York 50 years apart and discover a mysterious connection at the American Museum of Natural History.

“It was about how to play those two periods [1927 and 1977] and those two kids, but at the same time not having it feel like two movies,” said Burwell, who previously collaborated with Haynes on the Oscar-nominated “Carol,” HBO Series “Mildred Pierce,” and glitter-rockfest “Velvet Goldmine.”

Finding Their Voices

Wonderstruck” weaves in and out of the black-and-white silent movie world of Rose, which, without dialogue, relies heavily on Burwell’s score, and the gritty world of Ben. Each kid searches for a missing parent to solve a puzzle and becomes immersed in two very different New Yorks (one ascendant in ’27 and the other at its nadir in ’77).

After working on “Hugo” (based on Brian Selznick’s illustrated novel, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret”), costume designer Sandy Powell became the first champion of his follow-up, “Wonderstruck.” In fact, Powell was so taken with his parallel adventures of two deaf children in 1927 and 1977 New York, that she encouraged him to write a screenplay and then gave it to Todd Haynes, who read it and agreed to direct.

“I thought it would make a wonderful movie, and, after Brian finished the script, I joked that I would have to produce it,” said the three-time Oscar-winning Powell (“The Young Victoria,” “The Aviator,” and “Shakespeare in Love”).

“I immediately thought of Todd. He’s so visual and he takes risks, and I was interested in his take on younger people driving the story,” added Powell, who previously worked with the director on “Carol,” “Far From Heaven,” and “Velvet Goldmine.”

The 56-year-old director has been making films for nearly 40 years, but in some ways he’s still the Brown semiotics grad who can’t resist the siren’s call of form. As he admits, “I like to set up obstacles at times, because movies are ultimately about what the spectator brings to them.”

That would seem to make him an unlikely candidate to direct a young-adult adaptation, but his “Carol” and “Velvet Goldmine” costume designer Sandy Powell knew better. When she discovered Brian Selznick’s 2011 graphic novel “Wonderstruck,” which intertwines stories from 1927 and 1977 in a young-adult mystery with little dialogue, she encouraged him to adapt it for Haynes on spec.

Sony Classical announces the release of Goodbye Christopher Robin (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with an original score by Academy Award®-nominated composer Carter Burwell.

26 years, 6 movies, and 1 miniseries since winning the grand Jury Prize with his debut film Poison at Sundance, Todd Haynes remains a remarkably difficult auteur to pin down. Todd Haynes to Direct Documentary on The Velvet Underground

Coming off the heels of the Cannes premiere of his new film Wonderstruck, which will be shown as the Centerpiece selection of this year’s New York Film Festival, Todd Haynes has announced that his next project will be a documentary on the legendary rock band The Velvet Underground. As reported on by Variety, Haynes, for which this will be his first documentary, is seeking to create a visual experience that will “rely certainly on [Andy] Warhol films but also a rich culture of experimental film, a vernacular we have lost and we don’t have, [and that] we increasingly get further removed from,” in addition to interviews with the surviving members of the band and other contemporaries.

In addition, the article mentions an Amazon limited TV series that the director is developing which is said to be about a currently unidentified, immensely influential and radical public figure.

Locarno, Switzerland — From “Velvet Goldmine” to the Velvet Underground.

Todd Haynes, director of acclaimed U.S. independent milestones – “Far From Heaven,” “Carol” are just two – is teaming with Christine Vachon at Killer Films, the producer of all his films, as well as David Blackman and Universal Music Group to direct his first documentary, on the Velvet Underground, one of the most seminal rock groups in history.

Haynes also remarked that he is preparing a limited TV series with Amazon about “an intensely important figure of immense historical and cultural influence.”

The American director-screenwriter and producer confirmed the Velvet Underground docu feature at the Locarno Festival, where he will receive the Pardo d’onore Manor for career achievement, 26 years after the Swiss festival selected his debut feature, “Poison,” in competition, helping to launch the career of one of the U.S.’s most laureled indie filmmakers.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced Todd Haynes’s Wonderstruck as the Centerpiece selection of the 55th New York Film Festival, set to run from September 28 - October 15.

Wonderstruck joins the previously announced opening night selection Last Flag Flying from Richard Linklater and will screen on October 7.

The dual-timeline story centres on the convergence of two deaf youngsters – living 50 years apart in 1977 and 1927 – who embark on emotional journeys to New York.

Their parallel adventures unfold largely without dialogue in a love letter to a bygone era of the city. Haynes regular Julianne Moore stars in a dual role alongside Oakes Fegley, Millicent Simmonds, and Michelle Williams.
