Just like any one of a hundred fart-joke inspired comedies trundled out every year this movie has it's moments and is at times very funny. Wayans is pretty good mainly because he can be ridiculous without over-acting and therefore becoming annoying. However, there is nothing here that you haven't seen before and to know exactly what's going to happen before it happens becomes tiresome. If you want low-budget comedy you'd be better off watching the inspired Ski School 2 or Happy Gilmore and give this one a miss.

Predictable, Juvenile, Entertaining
Enchorde28 February 2004
Yes. This movie is predictable. You do not have to watch very long before you may guess almost everything that will happen, and sure enough, it does. No surprises anywhere. In addition, as in many other movies which Marlon Wayans appears in, a lot of the jokes is pretty juvenile and of "low" quality, focusing on stuff you thought were funny when you were five years old and very tired. The again, some of the jokes, still being juvenile, is actually funny. So, as it turns out, as a whole, the movie is entertaining. Not the best comedy ever made, but I have seen a lot worse too.

Wayans does his stuff as can be expected, not raising any eyebrows (for his performance anyway) nor disappointing. However, personally, I hoped for David Spade to have a bigger role. In my opinion he is a very good comedian but does not have any chance to show it in this movie.

To conclude, do not have the greatest expectations, sit back and enjoy.

Hilarious if you fit the target audience!
vermundr31 July 2022
This movie is for teens and people in their early 20s tops. It was a barrel of laughs for me growing up. Watching it decades later and after so many other and better comedies, it doesn't really hold up that well. With that being said, if you want to watch something over the top and juvenile this is highly recommended!

Very funny and also touching
vchimpanzee13 June 2006
Darryl Witherspoon is a senior economics major whose mother has been raising several children on her own in a bad section of New York City. He is very bright and has a good chance of getting out of that neighborhood. But he has bills to pay and may get kicked out of the apartment he shares with hockey player Tim.

Darryl has a good chance at being the one junior analyst hired that year by the prestigious Wall Street firm Smythe-Bates. But his competition includes Scott Thorpe, whose father works for the firm. Scott belongs to the fraternity Darryl wants to join, and he thinks he is better than everyone else and that Darryl isn't good enough to be one of them. Darryl also can't make it as a hockey player.

Impressing Smythe-Bates becomes less of a priority as Darryl looks for work just to keep his apartment. The university is testing an experimental drug which heightens the five senses. Despite the potential side effects, Darryl is determined to do whatever it takes to make the money he needs. One possible problem with the drug he is not told about: at too high a dosage, one of the five senses shuts down, followed by another, and another. It's not possible to predict which of the senses will go or when, but you can bet this will happen at the worst possible time.

Darryl also wants to meet girls, and Janice is attractive, pleasant and intelligent. Can he win her love? Can he find a way to impress Smythe-Bates?

This was very funny. I liked the concept--as in "Smallville", a shiny green liquid can give an ordinary person super powers, and it can also cause all sorts of trouble.

But the movie wasn't just funny. The romantic scenes were also warm and touching.

The writing was quite intelligent. Someone must have known how Wall Street operates and the economic principles that guide the financial industry.

I'm surprised we haven't heard more from Marlon Wayans. Although he seemed like a silly clown at times, he really demonstrated comic abilities when Darryl struggled with the drug's problems. And he showed superior talent for both comedy and drama when the drug did what it was supposed to do.

David Spade was somewhat less of a loser here than he usually is. He excels at playing jerk loser characters, but Scott had more dimension than the usual Spade type.

Richard McDonagle was quite good as one of the top men at Smythe-Bates. And Tamara Taylor impressed as Janice. Esther Scott had a brief but effective performance as Darryl's determined mother.

This was really worth seeing. Don't be misled by the title.

"Corn?? I ain't been eatin' no corn!"
PredragReviews11 June 2016
I had medium expectations, because the Wayne's brothers are all hilarious, but I'd never heard of the movie, which isn't a good sign. First of all, never judge a movie and how funny it is if you watch it on cable. The editors and censors on TV edit some very funny stuff out of movies. The jokes still make me laugh just as hard. Marlon Wayans really shows off his comedic talent in this, probably more than any other movie he's ever done. See it and you'll know what I mean. The script is solid, and David Spade is the same as always, which is a good thing. I love the line "Dad, I know you love me! Remember that time you almost said it?" Marlon Wayens is a college student who has lots of jobs in order to survive. But the biggest job he wants is a Wall Street firm he will do whatever it takes to get it so when went to see some guy who did a test subject on him that makes his senses be king size greater then any average human. But if he take a over dose he can lose his sense's at a time. The stuff has to wear off at a time by it leaking out of him on it's own. I thought it was funny when he meat this homeless person he couldn't see at the time the homeless person knew it so he took advantage and stole his clothes he was nude. Marlon Wayans is truly funny, however, for the life of me I don't see why he keeps doing these slapstick/bathroom humor movies. He's in the vein of Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams, etc. who can do funny ad libs. You know most of what he said wasn't in the script. David Spade was actually pretty good and annoying in the movie as the smug rich little daddy's kid. But tops goes to Wayan's roommate. There really are his types in college the extremely experimental yet good hearted dope.

Overall rating: 7 out of 10.

Makes Austin Powers look like the Godfather
Serva15 February 2002
A previous commenter said something about that the only thing that works in this movie is Marlon Wayans. I beg to differ and add Wayans to the things that don't work. Because this must be one of the most unfunny "comedies" I've seen in a long while.

The plot is incredibly stupid on many levels, they use plot points that are too embarrassing to use in TV-series for kids. The comedy consists mostly of fart jokes and adjacent categories of such jokes. Am I strange because I don't find these funny? What kind of target audience are they aiming at anyway? Kids? Maybe they would think it is funny, but how much of the romance and all the economy and college stuff will they really understand?

I don't know, Marlon Wayans's face in a close-up while he attempts to make a face to show some indiscernible kind of expression over and over again is not my idea of fun. I'm sorry, but he's no Jim Carrey. Far from it. I can count one (1) time when I actually laughed at a joke when watching this movie. That was a word joke which of course they managed to subtitle wrong, but I still got it. One joke out of 93 minutes. It's good it says comedy on the box otherwise I don't know if I would've grasped that.

People who bash the Austin Powers movies and likes it should really have a look at this one. Trust me, you'd be in for a ride. Especially the first Austin Powers movie is so many lightyears away quality-wise from this unfunny drivel.

"Senselessly Funny"
Kamurai2510 July 2021
Good watch, could watch again, and can recommend.

This is a top notch cast, in 1998 and in 2021. There is quality execution and a good concept.

I feel it's a little unrelatable as it feels like an ivy league problem, but the core of rich vs middle class is still there.

I actually miss movies like this. Even if it is only a good movie, and not a great movie, it will always been good because the basic principles are there.

Pathetic!
saint40527 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Senseless is a tragedy film with one character being the center of attention, throw in a stupid plot about a new drug, add a subplot about trying to win a job, and why not, pluck a few good actors out of the bag and throw it into this film to make a horrible film! Marlon Waynes as Witherspoon is not funny at all. All he does is scream, cry, run around, and itch his behind! David Spade was totally useless as the evil villain Scott who was nothing but a big dork and we have the wonderful Matthew Lillard playing some junkie gay thug. Now the start of this film is okay with Marlon running around doing errands, trying to raise money for his mom and his college education by giving blood multiple times and working as a equipment manager but the film falls like a rock! No funny jokes at fall, Marlons out burst are the most idiotic things, Spade is totally uncool, and the girlfriend is just thrown in for some zest which even burns the suck fire brighter! Avoid this film at all cost, don't bother! You will get dumber by watching this movie, it's pathetic! 1 out of ten, horrible!

Its A Good Movie
piinkk_panther2 July 2006
I think this movie was very well done. It had lots of laughs,an entertaining plot and good acting for the most part.It also had great actors in it (Matthew Lillard,Marlon Wayans, David Spade etc.) Wayans did an amazing job but i have to say that Lillard was the funniest, even though he didn't have a very big part. This definitely wasn't Spade's best movie though, because he came off very boring and quite annoying in most scenes. But overall, this movie was pretty good. I really liked it, and if your a Wayans or Lillard fan, I'm sure you will too. This movie is pretty much all about immature jokes, so if you are not looking for that kind of comedy, you should try a different movie.

"For $3000, I'll be your little "Outbreak" monkey!"
Hey_Sweden24 July 2022
Marlon Wayans admittedly does a lot of mugging in this farcical, frenetic comedy made by cult filmmaker Penelope Spheeris when she was cranking out one Hollywood comedy after another. Daryl Witherspoon (Wayans) is a Stratford student always desperately trying to raise money: for tuition, rent, *and* other things. Then he volunteers to test a revolutionary drug (which glows green, like the Re-Agent in "Re-Animator") that will greatly enhance his five senses. This will give him all the edge he needs in the cutthroat competition for a highly coveted junior analyst job with Smythe-Bates.

The humor in this amiable comedy *can* get outrageous, very crude, and over the top, but there's usually something to be said for good dumb humor. And "Senseless" does generate a fair amount of genuine guffaws; Wayans is hilarious. He knocks down all of the scenery whenever he's required to portray those disastrous side effects when he foolishly ups the dose of green stuff. But the story works also because his character is *relatable*. He doesn't come from money, but he's smart, knows his stuff, and works hard. You automatically root for him over somebody like snide, smarmy, sardonic competitor Scott Thorpe (David Spade, who by this point could play this kind of character in his sleep).

The supporting cast is fantastic, with Rip Torn great fun as a slick and confident corporate bigwig. Tamara Taylor is absolutely lovely and very appealing as Janice, the apple of Daryls' eye. Brad Dourif is a hoot as the owlish professor / scientist who came up with the drug; why hasn't he gotten more comedy roles over the years? Matthew Lillard is likewise amusing as the hockey-playing roommate and poetry student who treats his body like one giant pincushion. Other familiar faces like Debra Jo Rupp, John Ingle, Ernie Lively, Jenette Goldstein, Ken Lerner, Greg Grunberg, and Jeff Garlin also turn up. (By the way, that's hockey legend Grant Fuhr who doubles for Wayans in the hockey scenes.) There are two great cameo appearances, one by basketball star Patrick Ewing and one right at the end.

Overall "Senseless" rates as engaging nonsense for fans of 90s comedies. It's well-paced and moves to a lively score by the group Yello (of "Oh Yeah" fame).

Seven out of 10.

Not that good but if you have good mood-maybe
denis66612 January 2005
Well i read in the TV programmer that on one Chanel i can watch a movie with Matthew Lillard.I saw Marlone Wayns and David Spade and i said to myself-"This movie will be hilarious.OK what are my impressions after watching Senseless.Black comedy with good cast which saves the whole film.First of all-Marlon Wayns. The big star from Scary Movie[2 years later].I thought that he becomes great black comedian actor in Scary Movie but he is also good enough in Senseless.Nobody can compare with Shorty but Darryl is also good character that suits Marlon.Second of all-David Spade. He appears in the big "Just Shoot Me" as Denis and he is great there. Now he is the rich guy who must take his economic test and beat Darryl. He is mean in this one but also great movie for him.Matthew Lillard. His best movie is defiantly Scream and he is also my favorite actor. He does't make much appearances in Senseless but in the scene he is,he is good. Not so hilarious as Scream,Scooby Doo and most of his other films but again the guy that the people notices. At all a good comedy in which Darryl gets super powers of his senses. If you want to watch something with Marlon and Matthew in your free time, choose this.It won't let you down.

what ever happened to humour in this world
stuart-188811 January 2006
I don't believe the poor rating that this film has been given. This is one of the funniest films I have seen in a long time. If people watched it with an open mind and stopped trying to serious movie critics and analyse every film they see, they would realise that it is great fun and entertaining. I have recommended this film to lots of my mates and they all thought it was side-splittingly funny. Everybody out there who gave it a crap rating should watch it again, as I pity them for their lack of humour and understanding of a good comedy. I gave this film a ten and I think it was worth every point. Anybody else agree-let me know.Vote and lets get this movie up from the paltry score of 5.4(what an insult)ENOUGH SAID. WAYANS BROTHERS ROCK.

A fun enough watch...
paul_haakonsen19 August 2021
Oddly enough, then I haven't had the chance to watch the 1998 romantic comedy "Senseless" before now in 2021. In fact, I had not even heard about it before now, as I had the opportunity to watch it.

But I must say that given the movie having a cast assemble that included Marlon Wayans, David Spade, Matthew Lillard, Rip Torn, Debra Jo Rup and Brad Dourif, then I figured it wouldn't be all that bad.

And as it turned out, then "Senseless" was actually a funny and entertaining movie. Writers Greg Erb and Craig Mazin managed to churn out a storyline that was funny and entertaining, while having characters that were adding flavor to the storyline.

There are a good amount of laughs throughout the course of this 1998 comedy, and Marlon Wayans actually carries the movie quite well with his performance here.

While "Senseless" is watchable and entertaining, then it is hardly a movie that warrants more than just a single viewing, as the contents of the storyline hardly seem capable of multiple viewings.

My rating of director Penelope Spheeris's 1998 romantic comedy lands on a six out of ten stars.

Starts off OK but them becomes preposterous, annoying and unfunny
goods11613 November 2019
Promising start but as the movie progresses the story becomes overly silly and preposterous. If funny, perhaps that would be fine, but there are very few, if any laughs. This is a bad movie.

Up there
James-Durham19 January 2000
Its easy for people to get hooked on the gross-out comedies like American Pie and Something about Mary, but when a comedy like this comes along and the actor is obviously having so much fun in the role that the jokes seem natural, its hard to pass 'Senseless' off as being anything but hilarious.

Marlon Wayans really has come about as an actor since Mo Money and that other movie I think it was called 'Dont go dissin your homeboy while drinkin yo juice in the hood', however Mathew Lillard cant seem to break away from that surfer dude retro generation exxer persona that we see in most of his films.

David Spade tries hard but Wayans upstages everyone.

An insult to the viewers intelligence
placebotonic20 August 2007
When I'm running out of DVD's to watch, I'm kind of ready to watch anything, so last night, this was it. IMDb score was decent enough, but it was obvious to me I wasn't going to get awed by the movie.

Senseless is a comedy where the characters KNOW they're in a comedy and would do anything to get a laugh, which means, follow every cliché in history of comedy and exploit it until there's only some dust left. The plot is utterly predictable, Marlon Wayans does not understand the concept of the funny, or the concept of acting. Sure, you have to cut some slack to a comedy, you know, laws of physics do not necessarily apply, people are overly goofy, but seriously, if someone acted like the extreme non plus ultra overboard character of Marlon Wayans in real life, it would take less than a day for him to land in an insane asylum. I don't think this movie could possibly be parodied, unless the character would grimace through 100 percent of the movie, not just 95. Also, no disrespect to the actress, but I could not understand the Darryl's shock when he first saw his 'dream girl'. I just thought, wait, what, THIS girl took his breath away? In a university campus virtually littered with pretty girls? Uh... yeah... right, also, the chemical lab is full of bubbling glow-in-the-dark colored liquids, fumes, plus the stereotypical chemyst? It's like this movie was made by two screenplay writers and two directors, one team worked on making this movie for 4 year old kids, the other team worked on making it for 16+ kids and adults, then they put it in a blender, drank it, and vomited this movie.

I know, it's far easier to make a good drama, than a good comedy movie, but this piece... not just didn't make me laugh, it made me uncomfortable, irritated, nervous and angry, I felt insulted and violated. I know of no other movie that even came close to this and for achieving this, it gets a 3 instead of 1.

If you have a choice to watch this movie or stare at the ceiling, I recommend the ceiling.

1 - (transitive) To repulse, disgust, or discourage.

Example:

_The Excrement, urine, semen,.. well the whole rude humor really turns me off.

_Good comedies with good ideas turn me off when they use easy dirty jokes.

_I swear to god, (Senseless) turned me off for days after watching it due to its fart jokes.

2 - (transitive) To power down; to stop a device by switching it off.

Example:

_Turn off the TV and unplug it when (Senseless) is on.

3 - (intransitive) To leave a road; exit.

Darryl needs a cookie.....
FlashCallahan30 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Darryl Witherspoon is a college student who wants to win annual junior analyst competition, which can land him a job in a big brokerage company.

But because he hardly earns any money, and that of what he does, he gives to his family, he becomes a guinea pig for a drug developed at the college which is promised to heighten all senses by ten times....

The first thing you notice about watching any movie starring Wayans from Mo' Money, right up to The Heat, is the fact that the man doesn't age, and it can really put you off track when you are trying to follow the movie. Seriously though, the man has looked about twenty two for over twenty years.

And that's about the most interesting thing about this generic, not very funny high concept comedy. Wayans is okay, but whilst watching it, I kept thinking Eddie Murphy would have done this better in 1988, and Akroyd would have been great as the Spade character. Plus it could have been the old sweary Murphy too.

So hilarity ensues when Darryl starts to experience heightened sense. He sees women's derrières up close, he smells people's breath, and hears people on the toilet, you can tell where the rest of the humour goes.

Spade though, is brilliant as the adversary, here ally oozes slime, and would have been better suited to this type of role, he's easily the best thing about this.

The plot is predictable, and it turns out predictable. Just as things are going great for Darryl, something happens with the drug, and makes things go bad for a while, and then things get better again.

Don't be fooled by the fact that its directed by the same person who did Wayne's World, That's all down to Mike Myers.

This is generic toilet humour with very little going for it.

No sense
raulfaust6 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
"Senseless" used to be one of my favorite movies when I was a young boy. You know, in puberty era. Yesterday I happened to watch it again, and man, this movie doesn't feel that good anymore. Main plot is completely original, making me congratulate the writers for such creativity. Directing, although being predictable sometimes, never disappoints. Even thought I laughed in most scenes that had jokes, sometimes it feels like there's been too few comedy scenes. Marlon Wayans is what makes these jokes actually work. The scene in which Darryl tries to kiss that other girl and his "member" doesn't work used to be a lot funnier in past. Now, am I becoming bad humored or this kind of joke got old. Rest of the cast is just normal and there's nothing bad to say about them. "Senseless" is pretty much it, some laughs here and there, an original story with a clichéd yet ridiculous ending that Hollywood usually makes and nothing else.

Senseless was a very entertaining film!
Leah-710 October 1998
Unlike some of the other users who have rated this film I enjoyed it. I am not a person who has the right to judge a film all I know is that it was not a bad movie. Matthew Lillard is a very good actor this might not have been him best movie but it was one of them. If you liked this movie you might also like Hackers it is a movie also casting Matthew. Scream is one of many others he plays in. It might be of a different genre but he bring comedy to a horror movie and that is not a easy task to uphold.

i truly recommend it, i couldn't stop laughin! Marlon Wayans is like the black Jim Carrey (in my opinion)

so rent it on DVD, and come here! this movie deserves a big 10 for its original idea and funny stuffs

Actually, pretty good!
Bio Hazard28 March 2001
I'd never even heard of Senseless, but it was recommended to me with high praise - so I gave it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised, well, I'm not saying it was fantastic - but I did laugh enough to make watching worth my while.

It may help being a fan of one of the actors. I'm not a huge Wayans fan, any of the, how many of them are there? Anyway, nor am I a huge fan of Spade, although he has his moments. I am a huge Matthew Lillard fan, though (no, I'm not a 16 year old girl!) and I found his performance typically Lillard-esque - which is entertaining no matter what the role is - or how under-written his part is. Any fan of Matt will at least get something out of this movie. Keeping in mind I am not a huge Wayans or Spade fan, both gave good performances. Wayans had some great moments.

Directed by Penelope Spheeris, (Wayne's World) - Senseless is overall a pretty good movie with a warm ending, which, being as it *is* a comedy, is a *lot* better than a cold ending!
