Brie Larson stars in the superb Room. Here's our review of one of the best films of the last few years...

It's funny how a number of this year's Oscar favourites have namesakes in very dissimilar from previous years. Inside Out is also a British thriller in which Telly Savalas and Robert Culp try to recover Nazi gold, The Revenant is also a dark comedy about a zombie-vampire hybrid, and one must hope that somewhere, Tommy Wiseau is dusting off his tux and his football, confused but vindicated by how his legendary cult classic The Room is finally getting some buzz.

Meanwhile, on a far more serious note, Room has scooped a number of Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Lenny Abrahamson and Best Actress for Brie Larson. It's definitely not to be confused with anything that has gone before and it's hard to think »

The trailer for the true story of Newt Knight and his rebellion against the Confederates, Free State of Jones starring Matthew McConaughey, is out!  Take a look!

The tremendous career of Matthew McConaughey continues to expand, before our very eyes, as he takes on the role of Newt Knight in Free State of Jones.

"Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville), and starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey. Free State Of Jones is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance »

Matthew McConaughey Leads The Charge As A Freedom Fighter In First Free State Of Jones Trailer

11 January 2016 7:20 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Musket in hand and a fearless sense of leadership in tow, Matthew McConaughey spearheads a rebellion against the Confederacy in the rip-roaring first trailer for Free State of Jones, which has surfaced online for your viewing pleasure.

Thrusting McConaughey Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell, and Mahershala Ali into the throes of the American Civil War, it’s the former star who toplines Gary Ross’ period drama as a downtrodden Southern farmer (Newton Knight), who sparks an uprising in Jones County. Less a Knight in shining armor and more of a grizzled, world-weary freedom fighter, McConaughey’s lead helped make history by setting up a tight-knit, mixed-race community that was unique to the Deep South at the time.

Drawing attention to the underlying racial tension and jaw-dropping set pieces, today’s trailer serves up a concise overview of the story without divulging too much, and we’re intrigued to see if the »

Inspired by the true story of Newton Knight, the upcoming film stars Matthew McConaughey as Knight, who led an armed rebellion against the Confederacy during the Civil War. In addition to... Matthew McConaughey Leads a Rebellion in First Trailer For ‘Free State of Jones’

9 January 2016 3:30 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Following his financially successful launch of The Hunger Games franchise, Gary Ross is going back in time for a Civil War drama. The Pleasantville director’s Free State of Jones is led by Matthew McConaughey and follows a Southern farmer who leads a rebellion against the Confederacy.

Once set to come out earlier this year, the newly launched Stx gave it the prime summer release date of mid-May, which hopefully is a promising sign of quality. The first trailer, which has arrived today, delivers about what you’d expect based on the premise, with another seemingly dedicated performance from McConaughey. Also starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell, and Mahershala Ali, check out the trailer, new images, and poster below.

First Poster For Matthew McConaughey's 'Free State Of Jones' Revealed

5 January 2016 6:55 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Summer might seem an odd time to release a tale of rebellion during the Civil War — frankly, it seems like something more geared to the awards season — but perhaps "Free State Of Jones" will be a welcome break from the onslaught of big-budget blockbusters. And as one of our 100 Most Anticipated Films Of 2016, it's definitely one we're keeping an eye an on. Directed by Gary Ross ("The Hunger Games," "Pleasantville") and starring Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, Keri Russell, and Brendan Gleeson, the films tells the true story of farmer Newt Knight who rises up against the Confederacy. “It’s a story about America and its relation with the individual and freedom,” McConaughey told EW. “The period of Reconstruction following the Civil War is still under construction today. Why we were divided by race instead of being united by class didn’t make sense to Newt Knight back then, »
