The film editing branch of the Academy used to offer up adventurous options like “Basic Instinct,” “Hoop Dreams,” “Speed,” “Crimson Tide,” “Seven,” “Air Force One” and “Out of Sight,” best picture prospects be damned. Not so much anymore. Every now and then we’ll get a “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” here, a “United 93” there, but mostly — and perhaps even understandably, given the expanded top field of the last six seasons — this race has shifted to a place of mirroring the best picture category.
With that in mind, this year’s top contenders are sure to figure in as always. At the top of the list of anticipations is Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “The Revenant,” cut by Oscar-winner Stephen Mirrione (“Traffic”). The film was shot in sequence, which is unique, particularly for a project of this scale and scope. Assassin's Creed (the movie) hits multiplexes on December 21, 2016. Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, the latest Assassin's Creed game, comes out on October 23 - don't get the two confused, or you'll have a very disappointing trip to the cinema.

Academy Award-winning film editor Anne V. Coates will receive the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn.’s award for career achievement, the group announced on Saturday. She is the second editor to receive a lifetime honor from the L.A. critics, after the late Dede Allen in 1999.
The British-born Coates, 89, began her career splicing together religious short films for church tours — a job that she received with the help of her uncle, the film producer and entrepreneur J. Arthur Rank, who hoped that she would lose interest in the industry. Instead, she eventually became an assistant film editor at London’s Pinewood Studios.
Coates received her first editing credit on Noel Langley’s “The Pickwick Papers” (1952), a full decade before she would win the Oscar for cutting David Lean’s “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962). While Steven Soderbergh is a familiar name to film fans, with a filmography that includes Out of Sight, Ocean’s Eleven, and The Informant!, his past few projects have seen the filmmaker return to television after nearly a decade away from the small screen. Day of the Mother: Stone’s Flighty Revenge Thriller Favors Laughs
There’s a certain degree of entertainment to be gleaned from director Charles Stone III’s latest feature, Lila & Eve, from first time screenwriter Pat Gilfallan, though unfortunately in the form of unintentional comedy. Derided as a camp after its late premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, it’s Stone’s first directorial feature in over a decade (he’s been working in television since the 2004 Bernie Mac headlined Mr 3000, including the widely discussed TLC Lifetime film CrazySexyCool), and most likely won’t garner much favorable attention. Sony’s planned narrative adaptation of the 2014 documentary The Seven Five just took a big step closer to realisation, with the news that the studio is approaching screenwriter Scott Frank to undertake scripting duties. Frank is the scribe behind such titles as Malice, Get Shorty, Out Of Sight, Minority Report and The Wolverine, and his potential involvement brings huge momentum to the project.
The documentary The Seven Five had its premiere at Doc NYC last year, and Sony snapped up the rights to remake it soon after. It details the devastating police corruption case that shook the New York Police Department to its core in the early 1990s, when 75th precinct officer Michael Dowd was tried and convicted of a raft of terrible crimes. Dowd established a network of illegal activities, recruiting his fellow officers to extort money from drug dealers for protection, and also sell drugs of their own. »
