description of film, plot
2 August 1999 | by See all my reviews

By the time I saw "Lani Loa" as the Oahu closing film of the 1998 Hawaii International Film Festival, its reputation had preceded it. Some of its small audience were there on the expectation of its being awful; we were not disappointed. Following a badly staged bank robbery in Hilo, Hawaii, the robbers flee into the county, killing most of a wedding party. The groom, a policeman, is suspected of revenge-killing the robbers. The killings all take place outside and at night--as they were photographed in China--and feature different actors. By the time we are told who did it, we already know who did it, and we never cared anyway. The style is incompetently derivative of Hong Kong action movies, perhaps the only movies director Sherwood Hu has ever seen. Even some of the people who worked on the film, who live on Oahu, did not avail themselves of their only opportunity to see it. You will never have the opportunity to see this film; you are lucky.
