Bassett makes 'Mr. 3000' team with Disney, Mac

Angela Bassett has signed on to star opposite Bernie Mac in the Walt Disney Co. baseball comedy Mr. 3000. Being directed by Drumline helmer Charles Stone, Mr. 3000 centers on a retired Detroit Tigers player (Mac) who comes out of retirement when three of his base hits are disallowed, dropping him below the prized 3,000-hit plateau. Bassett will play a sports reporter who is Mac's love interest in the film. Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Maggie Wilde are producing the project, which was penned by Eric Champnella and Keith Mitchell. Frank Marshall, Johnathan Glickman and Steven Greener are executive producing. Disney production exec Jason Reed is overseeing for the studio. Bassett, who has starred in such films as The Score, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Waiting to Exhale, also appears in the upcoming Sony Pictures Classics drama Masked & Anonymous. Bassett is repped by CAA. »

How Stella Got Her Groove Back helmer Kevin Sullivan has cut a deal to direct Barbershop 2 for MGM and State Street Pictures. Sullivan replaces Tim Story, who directed the first installment and was on board for the sequel but later fell out in favor of Date School at DreamWorks Pictures. With Sullivan at the helm, the studio and producers are gearing up for a summer start in Chicago. »

Chicago actor Taye Diggs has wed his longtime girlfriend - in the same location where he made his movie debut. The former Ally McBeal star tied the knot with actress and singer Idina Menzel on 11 January at Montego Bay, Jamaica's picturesque Round Hill resort, which is also where he shot 1998's How Stella Got Her Groove Back alongside Angela Bassett. A small group of family and friends attended the nuptials. The two met while performing in the original Broadway production of Rent. »
