Christian Slater to star in horror thriller Playback

13 September 2010 8:44 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

After a hiatus from the big screen, Christian Slater is set to star in upcoming horror Playback

Poor old Christian Slater. After a promising early career as a young heartthrob in the 80s, starring in the excellent The Name Of The Rose (1986) and Heathers (1989), followed by 90s lead roles such as True Romance and John Woo's affably mad Broken Arrow, Slater's career began to stutter somewhat with the damp squib of a thriller Hard Rain and the aptly named Very Bad Things (it was even worse than the title suggested).

Having retreated into television in recent years, most notably in NBC's My Own Worst Enemy in 2008, Slater is set to return to the big screen in the independent horror thriller Playback, according to Variety, and will appear as "a sinister cop who is pivotal in exposing a small town's deepest, darkest secret."

The film is currently in its second week of shooting, »

Production gets underway next week at Ireland's Ardmore Studios on the historical television drama series 'Camelot'. Worth an estimated $32million to the Irish industry, the ten part series will film in Ireland for 22 weeks. Irish director Ciaran Donnelly takes the helm for the first two episodes and will be followed by Canadian director Jeremy Podeswa - both directors worked on 'The Tudors' with Donnelly winning an Ifta for his efforts in 2009. Danish director Mikael Salomon (A Far Off Place, Hard Rain) will lead the team for episodes 5 & 6. Solomon has received two Oscar nominations for his cinematography work (Backdraft, The Abyss) and includes the Irish shot 'Far and Away' in his long list of Dop credits. Other 'Tudors' alumni include line producer Séamus McInerney, Emmy winning Irish costume designer Joan Bergin (The Prestige, Veronica Guerin), Emmy nominated Irish production designer Tom Conroy (Breakfast on Pluto, Intermission) and »

Shaye and Co. Walk Through Heavy Rain

19 May 2010 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

No, not Hard Rain with Christian Slater. We're talking about Heavy Rain , the Playstation 3 game that hit stores in February. Deadline reports the screen rights were up for grabs and former New Line Cinema big dog Bob Shaye was the top contender for picking them up. Since departing New Line, Shaye is now running Unique Features with Michael Lynne. Heavy Rain is a film noir-esque mystery surrounding the Origami Killer, a maniac who drowns his victims during extended periods of rain fall. The story surrounds four characters, including a father trying to keep his son out of the killer's clutches. Quantic Dream developed the game. »

[DVD Review] The Wraith

18 March 2010 7:30 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Lots of odd things came out of the 80s: a love for bright red leather jackets, lots of bad horror films, and The Wraith. One part love song to muscle cars and another part someone's badly conceived sci-fi, beyond the grave romance. It really is hard to pinpoint exactly where this should fall in the grand spectrum of teen flicks. The Wraith has the things you'd expect from that genre: a bully with a gang of moronic cohorts, a quiet-type hero, and a little bit of nudity. The dialogue is laughable, the acting is melodramatic, and then there's Randy Quaid trying his best to play a stern sheriff, a role no one who's seen Christmas Vacation will ever accept him in – even though he tried again in Hard Rain.

Packard (Nick Cassavetes) leads a really stupid troop of greasers who force other drivers into one on one racers where the »

[DVD Review] Hard Rain

25 February 2010 8:00 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

In theaters, Hard Rain wasn’t much to talk about, on Blu-ray that holds true.

It’s setting of a flooded town made for an interesting concept; the unforgiving temperament of weather represents a villain that can be at best survived, but never vanquished. With Hard Rain you have a troupe of bandits out to steal money (Villain 1), a torrential downpour and poorly maintained levy resulting in a monstrous flood (Villain 2), and human stupidity (Villain 3). Villain 1 includes the likes of Morgan Freeman (making them more likeable than the hero). Villain 2 can’t be defeated. Villain 3 is inevitable. In short, who the heck is cheering for the hero Christian Slater?

You’re essentially watching a bank heist movie minus the bank plus boats. In fact, the harder you examine the film, the more it feels like a small scale Waterworld. Stay with me on this. You have the beloved veteran actor »
