Stan Winston Week: Celebrating Lake Placid with Director Steve Miner & Exclusive Photo Gallery

7 July 2014 2:00 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

To kick-off Daily Dead’s Stan Winston Week, I decided to start with Lake Placid, one of my favorite monster movies Stan worked on that I felt never got the attention it truly deserved. Sure, creating a crocodile might sound like an ordinary effects job on paper, but it’s the sheer magnitude of the monstrous croc that is something only legendary effects master Stan Winston could have tackled with such authenticity and dedication.

To honor Lake Placid and Stan’s contributions to the film and the industry as a whole, I recently spoke extensively with the film’s director Steve Miner about his friendship and professional relationship with Winston throughout his career. Miner, the man associated with several other classic genre films like Friday the 13th Parts 1 through 3, House, Warlock, and Halloween: H20 also discussed how Stan was solely responsible for getting Lake Placid financed after creating the monstrous animatronic crocodile. »

Malek Akkad Talks New Halloween Film

29 June 2014 4:21 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

So the big question everyone has been wondering since the announcement of the next Halloween film was whether or not it would continue on in the universe set up by Rob Zombie. Recently Collider caught up with Malek Akkad at the Saturn Awards, who shed some light on the subject.

“I can’t talk about it too much right now," says Akkad. "It will definitely keep elements and bring in new elements. But I really want to bring it back to kind of like, the classic – because the last one got a little dark – I want to bring it back to the classic Friday night horror film that people will really like.”

When asked about the ill-fated Halloween 3D, which was announced a couple of years back...

"Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier did a script. The next day after the last one came out, we were back in production for Halloween 3D. »

In honor of Ravenous finally being released on Blu-Ray from those magnificent madmen at Scream Factory, I thought I’d conjure up some words about one of the great, underrated chillers of the 90’s. It’s a film I’ve deemed a personal favorite amongst mixed fans of film. I’ll recommend it without batting an eye. It’s essential viewing for horror fans, period. One of the key elements to understanding why I love Ravenous, you have to understand the background of my film going history that brought me to it.

For a great period in the 90’s, I saw many films in theaters with my uncle, and when I say many, I’d say it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of a metric ton. »

20 Movie Taglines That Make No Sense At All

23 April 2014 10:16 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Paramount

The marketing blitz has become an increasingly important part of the Hollywood machine. In order to put butts in seats and generate the maximum amount of revenue, people need to be aware of the project that they’re being sold. With advances in technology making promotional content more widespread than ever, there is an argument that the movie poster is becoming less significant. For major releases at least, they all seem to follow the same pattern of ‘hero facing the opposite way’ or ‘floating heads on blue/orange background’.

One of the most underrated aspects of movie marketing is the tagline; one sentence on the poster to entice people to go and see the finished product. Think of Alien, Jaws and Superman, hugely successful releases that just happened to have three of the most famous taglines in cinema history that any casual film fan can quote off the top of their heads. »

Cover Art for Lake Placid Collector’s Edition Blu-ray

Scream Factory recently announced they would be releasing Lake Placid as a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray. It has now been revealed that the movie will be released to Blu-ray in July and we have a look at the new cover art:

“Are you ready to devour another release from us? Well here’s a monstrous one for you…

The crocodile-chompin’- Betty-White-swearin’ film Lake Placid will be coming from us as a Collector’s Edition this Summer, which also marks its first time on Blu-ray! Released in 1999 and directed by Steve Miner (Friday the 13th Parts 2 & 3, Halloween: H20) this humorous take on the tried-and-true menacing reptile story stars Bridget Fonda (Single White Female), Bill Pullman (The Serpent and the Rainbow) and Oliver Platt (2012). Also notable, the film was written by famous TV Producer/Screenwriter David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, L.A. Law, Boston Legal).

Lake Placid Chomping its Way to Blu-ray This Summer Thanks to Scream Factory

30 January 2014 1:07 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

This summer Scream Factory will be releasing special editions of Final Exam, Evilspeak, Nosferatu (1979), Sleepaway Camp, Ravenous, Dog Soldiers, Hellhole, Deadly Eyes, Ginger Snaps, and Phantom of the Paradise. Will you still have room in your Blu-ray budget for Lake Placid?

For that matter, do you even care about owning Steve Miner’s 1999 crocodilian horror comedy written by David E. Kelley? Even as a fan of nature gone amok movies, I found foul-mouthed Betty White to be about the only memorable aspect of Lake Placid.

Clearly a lot of you enjoyed it more than me. How else to explain all those Syfy-produced sequels?

Those of you that dug Lake Placid should be thrilled that Scream Factory’s latest surprise announcement is their intention to release a Collector’s Edition Lake Placid Blu-ray sometime this summer. Here’s what they had to say on Facebook:
