Trivia

In the film, the characters played by Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon are often at odds with each other. In reality, the two are close friends, and chose this project specifically to work on together.
The film was dedicated "In loving memory of Irene Columbus", director Chris Columbus's mother, who in the year before the movie was released had died of cancer, a similar circumstance to one of the main characters in the movie.
The song that Isabel (Julia Roberts) sings to Ben (Liam Aiken) in the hospital is "If I Needed You". It was recorded by Roberts' ex-husband Lyle Lovett on his 1998 album "Step Inside This House".
Each of the leads (Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon, Ed Harris) was nominated for an Oscar for playing real people - Sarandon as Sister Helen Prejean in Dead Man Walking (1995), Roberts as Erin Brockovich-Ellis in Erin Brockovich (2000), and Harris as Jackson Pollock in Pollock (2000). Roberts and Sarandon both won; Harris lost.
This was the first theatrical film to premiere on the WB television network.
