Michel Hafner (18 July 1999):
This is a high quality DVD from Columbia/Tristar which scores well in all regards.
The film master is very clean and steady. There are no problems with color and contrast reproduction, and the noise and grain level is, despite the many dark scenes and special effects shots, low. Sharpness of this 16:9 enhanced disc is very good. Video artifacts are minimal except for an instance of aliasing in chapter 19 at 7:24-28 (the lights in the ceiling). Finally, thanks to dual layer technology (there is no pan & scan version on this disc), the average bit rate is rather high (but very variable, going from 2.5 MBit/s to peaks above 9.5), and distracting compression artifacts are absent. All this together provides a very film like presentation which should please on a TV set as well as on a high end projection system.
There is quite some supplemental material with pretty good image quality, too, a positive surprise. Most welcome to Godzilla fans is the inclusion of two original Japanese trailers.

Godzilla takes New York with before and after shots
(1998) Japan’s favorite big green monster takes a bite out of the big apple in the American remake directed by Roland Emmerich, where the rubber suit is replaced with a computer generated lizard that looks like it stepped out of Jurassic Parkand moves like the Roadrunner. The new edition tosses a couple of new supplements onto the disc. Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, Maria Pitillo, Hank Azaria, Kevin Dunn, Michael Lerner and Harry Shearer star.
