These instances see the director in question diving headlong into the critical and commercial abyss after a string of hits, and as of yet, failing to return to popular notoriety. It is a testament to both the power of the Hollywood machine, and also to the fact that perhaps some of these guys were just in the right place at the right »

A closer look at the Hollywood flop phenomenon

21 March 2012 10:11 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

John Carter’s mixed box office fortunes have been widely reported, but where does this obsession with hits and flops come from? Ryan takes a closer look...

“Buzzards were circling John Carter, it seemed, long before it was even released” was the opening line in a brief Den of Geek post about expensive movies from a couple of weeks ago. Those buzzards, it’s fair to say, have now hungrily descended.

Over the past day or two, news outlets of every type have been reporting about John Carter’s tepid box-office with barely concealed glee. The revelation that Disney would incur a $200 million writedown on John Carter was trumpeted in newspapers, on websites and on television. Could it be a bigger flop than Cutthroat Island, some outlets wondered. Could it even be the biggest flop of all time?

Now, there’s no getting away from the reality that John Carter’s performed significantly below expectations. »

Disney's John Carter set to be biggest flop in history with $200m loss

21 March 2012 6:09 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Disney's John Carter is set to be the biggest box office flop in history following the studio's revelation that it is expecting to lose $200million (£126million) on the sci-fi film.

Below, we take a look at cinema's top flops but first let's analyse what is going on with John Carter.

A statement released by Disney said: "In light of the theatrical performance of John Carter ($184million global box office), we expect the film to generate an operating loss of approximately $200 million during our second fiscal quarter ending March 31.

"As a result, our current expectation is that the Studio segment will have an operating loss of between $80 and $120 million for the second quarter. As we look forward to the second half of the year, we are excited about the upcoming releases of The Avengers and Brave, which we believe have tremendous potential to drive value for the Studio and the rest of the company. »
