Smith Takes TV Comedy Role

17 November 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Director Kevin Smith has signed up to star in the US remake of hit British TV show Manchild, because he wants to become a better actor. Smith has written, directed and starred in Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma and Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back - and now wants to turn his attention solely to portraying a cynical divorcee in the Showtime comedy. He tells MTV, "It should be an interesting exercise that, if the show works as well as the script, will turn into a sweet side gig for me. At the very least, I'll learn a thing or two about acting; at the most, I'll have something to do four months out of every year." »

Damon's Kirk Casting in Doubt

3 July 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Filmmaker Kevin Smith has cast doubt on speculation Matt Damon is being lined up to fill William Shatner's shoes as the new Captain Kirk. Mission: Impossible III director JJ Abrams reportedly wants Damon to play the legendary character in the next Star Trek movie, which will follow Kirk and Spock's younger years at a space academy. However, Smith - who directed the actor in Dogma - insists Damon is unlikely to accept the part, as he favors more original roles in his films. The director says, "I wonder if Matt would even do it. He's usually not that interested in treading where others have trod. He likes to break new ground." Despite his doubts, Smith jokes he'd welcome a sci-fi partnership with Damon's close pal Ben Affleck: "If they wind up casting Matt as Kirk, they should cast Ben as Spock. It seems like a no-brainer!" »

Damon and Affleck Reunite

9 February 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Best friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will star onscreen together for the first time in seven years when they appear in a new real-life legal drama. The pair will play lawyers battling to overturn a murder conviction in the untitled movie. The Good Will Hunting Oscar-winners have taken a number of cameo roles in the same films, but last appeared together in leading roles in 1999's Dogma; the two also made a cameo appearance together in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Affleck will feature as Michael Banks and Damon as J. Gordon Cooney - two lawyers who secured nine stays of execution for convicted John Tompson, but finally got him cleared of all charges after a 15-year battle. »
