Kirkpatrick lands Par pic with Murphy

27 April 2007 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Karey Kirkpatrick has signed on to direct the Eddie Murphy starrer Nowhereland for Paramount Pictures.

Penned by Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson, the comedy centers on a struggling businessman who solves his troubles at work by consulting his 6-year-old daughter and the imaginary world she has created.

Shooting is scheduled to begin Sept. 10.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing through his Paramount-based shingle alongside Solomon.

Kirkpatrick recently inked a two-year, first-look production deal with Paramount's Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films under his newly formed Blue Shirt Prods. label (HR 4/11).

The multihyphenate, who wrote and directed DreamWorks Animation's Over the Hedge, penned such family films as Charlotte's Web and Chicken Run. Kirkpatrick also produced Paramount's upcoming fantasy The Spiderwick Chronicles.

He is repped by WMA and the law firm Katz, Golden and Sullivan.

DWA-Aardman deal flushed

31 January 2007 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

LONDON -- Ending months of industry speculation, DreamWorks Animation and U.K.-based Aardman Animations said Tuesday that they are formally ending their working relationship after more than five years.

Sources close to Aardman, home of Oscar-winning animator Nick Park, said the British claymation stable is putting together an alternative arrangement at another studio, details of which will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

The parting of the ways comes on the heels of disappointing boxoffice for Aardman's nonmodel CGI creation "Flushed Away", which failed to catch on in theaters on either side of the pond. It has grossed about $62 million in the U.S. since its November release and £10 million in the U.K. since its early December bow.

The five-picture deal between the companies resulted in three titles: "Chicken Run", "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" (which won the 2006 Oscar for best animated feature) and "Flushed Away". It also famously saw the two butt heads over the script for "The Tortoise and the Hare", a 3-D claymation project. »
